We've spent the past 3 days exploring Lewis and Harris, a ridiculously beautiful area of Scotland, on a tour with Rabbies. Today's main attractions are the Callanish Standing Stones and Doune Broch.
The Callanish Stones are legit older than the pyramids, older than Stonehenge and you can just walk right up and touch them when you visit Scotland! The Callanish Circle is one of the more popular tourist attractions on the Isle of Lewis yet there was still very few people there. Both Lewis and Harris continue to impress us.
Our first stop was Doune Broch, considered part of the wider Callanish attractions it was an amainzing first stop on our last day with Rabbies - the views were amazing as we've come to expect from both Lewis and Harris either way.

The Standing Stones of Callanish - Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland
The Standing Stones of Challanish (Calanais or Chalanais in Gaelic) are described as a testament to the skills and determination of the people who lived in the area more than four thousand years ago. 'Construction of the site took place between 2900 and 2600 BC' says Wikipedia 'though there were possibly earlier buildings before 3000 BC. A tomb was later built into the site. Debris from the destruction of the tomb suggests the site was out of use between 2000 BC and 1700 BC. The 13 primary stones form a circle about 13 m in diameter, with a long approach avenue of stones to the north, and shorter stone rows to the east, south, and west (possibly incomplete avenues). The overall layout of the monument recalls a distorted Celtic cross. The individual stones vary from around 1 m to 5 m in height, with an average of 4 m, and are of the local Lewisian gneiss. Local tradition says that giants who lived on the island refused to be converted to Christianity by Saint Kieran and were turned into stone as a punishment. Another local belief says that at sunrise on midsummer morning, the shining one walked along the stone avenue, his arrival heralded by the cuckoo's call. This legend could be a folk memory recalling the astronomical significance of the stones.
In 1984, Ultravox used an image of the stones on the cover of their album Lament. In 1988, Jon Mark released a CD, The Standing Stones of Callanish, intended to evoke Britain's Celtic legacy.'
British Neolithic Stone Circle Marks an Ancient Lightning Strike | Ancient Architects
In today’s news, experts have revealed evidence of a massive, ancient lightning strike in the centre of a major stone circle in the Western Isles of Great Britain
The site is at the famous Callanish Standing Stones and one single large strike, or a number of small ones on the same spot, left a star-shaped magnetic anomaly in the centre of a 4-5,000-year-old ancient stone circle on the Isle of Lewis.
The discovery was made at what experts call Site XI, a hillside stone circle, about 2.8 kilometres from the famous Callanish great Circle in the island’s Loch Roag area, which sadly now consists of a single standing stone.
The star-shaped strike, which covers an area up to 20 metres in diameter, was identified after a geophysical survey and there is now a clear and obvious link between the construction of a stone circle and the forces of nature. Watch the video to learn more and please subscribe.

Visited the standing stones at Calanish in the Outer Hebrides. Was taking pictures of the sun over a couple of the stones to the south, when it started to rain. Turned around to see this. Apologies for the mild profanity: under the circumstances I think it can be excused... still buzzing!

AT CALLANISH II STONE CIRCLE, OUR NEOLITHIC ANCESTORS ERECTED AN ELLIPSE RING OF STANDING STONES. THE CIRCLE MEASURES ROUGHLY 22M X 19M. IT IS 0.5 MILE TO THE SE OF THE MAIN CALLANISH SITE. CALLANISH III IS 275M AWAY.
FIVE SLENDER, CRYSTALLINE, LEWIS GNEISS, MEGALITHS SURVIVE. THE STONES VARY IN HEIGHT FROM 2M TO 3.3M. CALLANISH II IS THE CLOSEST CIRCLE TO THE MAIN CALLANISH SITE AND IS CLEARLY VISIBLE.
IN 1858, 1M OF PEAT WAS REMOVED AND A FEW FEATURES, NOW LOST, WERE REVEALED. IT WAS REPORTED, THE CIRCLE WAS “CAUSEWAYED” MEANING THE INTERIOR WAS COBBLED OR PAVED.
FIVE PITS WERE UNCOVERED. IN THE HOLES WERE SMALL SEASHORE PEBBLES AND WOOD CHARCOAL. THE PITS MAY HAVE BEEN POST HOLES FOR A TIMBER STRUCTURE.
THE WEST ARC HAS NO STANDING STONES, HOWEVER, THREE LIE RECUMBENT, TWO STONES ARE VISIBLE, THE OTHER IS BELOW GROUND. A POSSIBLE OUTLINER STONE MAY HAVE EXISTED 20M TO THE NW.
ANOTHER FEATURE IS AN INTERNAL CAIRN OF SMALL STONES, THIS IS STILL VISIBLE. THE CAIRN IS 8.5M IN DIAMETER AND 0.3M HIGH. THE CAIRNS POSITION VARIES IN ANTIQUARIAN DRAWINGS.
A POSSIBLE INSCRIBE STONE WAS RECORDED THAT SUPPOSEDLY HAD OGHAM SCRIPTURES. THE STONE WAS POSSIBLY MOVED TO STORNOWAY (THE MAIN TOWN ON LEWIS) FOR PROTECTION, THEN TO THE GROUNDS OF LEWS CASTLE.
THE CALLANISH II GAELIC NAME (CNOC CEANN A’GHARRAIDH) TRANSLATES AS “HILLOCK AT THE END OF A WALL”. THE SLEEPING BEAUTY, RECUMBENT HILL FIGURE, IS CLEARLY SEEN FROM CALLANISH II.

Stonehenge in the west of England is undoubtedly the king of stone circles - stone monuments originally set out in a way to form a circle or ellipse.
However, it's easy to overlook the dozens of other stone circles which can be found across the British Isles and even as far afield as Israel. We gathered some other stone circles - one of which is underwater - that demonstrate the diversity of neolithic monuments.

New Research Finds Astronomical Connection to Scotland's Stone Circle
University of Adelaide research has for the first time statistically proven that the earliest standing stone monuments of Britain, the great circles, were constructed specifically in line with the movements of the Sun and Moon, 5000 years ago.
