Khmer Arts and Handicraft
Khmer Arts and Handicraft
Traditional Cambodian arts and crafts including silk weaving, silverwork, stone carving, wood carving, temple murals, basketry and kite-making.
Silk weaving in Cambodia has a long history. The practice dates to as early as the first century, and textiles were used in trade during Angkorian times. Even modern textile production evidences these historic antecedents: motifs found on silk today often echo clothing details on ancient stone sculptures.
There are two main types of Cambodian weaving. The ikat technique (Khmer: chong kiet), which produces patterned fabric, is quite complex. To create patterns, weavers tie and dye portions of weft yarn before weaving begins. Patterns are diverse and vary by region; common motifs include lattice, stars, and spots. The second weaving technique, unique to Cambodia, is called uneven twill.
Night Market in Cambodia ???????? | Khemer Street local food in Siem Reap
#Angkor _Night _Market in Siem Reap opened in 2007. It is said to be the first night market in Cambodia. What sets it apart from the other night markets I have seen in other Asian cities like Hong Kong, Malacca, and Bangkok, the Angkor Night Market features and highlights not just the goods being sold but also the place itself — a series of stylish traditional huts built Khmer style. This fosters a very Cambodian atmosphere, adding to a genuinely delightful experience walking around the labyrinth of over 240 shops. Most of the items available are paintings, wood carvings, silk, and local delicacies. There are also a few massage and spa bars for those who need a little more pampering after a day of exploring the city.
After fifteen minutes of squeezing our way through the narrow alleys sandwiched by traditional souvenir shops and massage corners, we emerged from the night market empty-handed. It’s not that we could not find anything great — there was a lot actually — but I just thought it was too early to buy souvenirs from this trip. It was only Day 3 of my month-long Southeast Asian trip and I wouldn’t want to worry about overspending in the future.
Pub Street
Just a couple of blocks from Angkor Night Market lies Pub Street. The name alone excites tourists, myself included. As the name suggests, Pub Street is a short alley flanked by clubs, bars, and restaurants, offering a wide variety of culinary treats from Khmer specialties to Western favorites. All these under the glowing neon signs of the establishments that have redefined the tourism culture in the city while providing what travelers look for — a happy hour after an exhausting day of touring.
Most of the customers here are backpackers ready for a drink or two (or twenty). Two of the most popular are Angkor What? and Temple Club, both seem to be on a neck-and-neck race for the award for who’s got the louder speakers. But the amped up music filling the air sets the party mood, with some tourists even dancing in the street. I had a pleasure of watching one female traveler showcase her best Gangnam Style moves.
Tucked in one adjacent alleyway is a bar called Linga. One night, on the way to the Pub Street, we passed by this establishment and we were drawn by the growing crowd. Apparently, the bar stages shows featuring their best gay performers. I also noticed that most of the patrons were gay men. Seeing cities embrace diversity always paints a smile on my face.

Beloved Battambang-Authentic Culture, Uniquely Cambodian
Subscribe to The Far East Adventure Travel podcast now!
It’s often overlooked or just a mere stopover to or from Siem Reap, home of the famous ruins of Angkor Wat but Battambang Cambodia should be on your radar of places to visit in this country. Full of Khmer culture, early 20th century French architecture and a unique charm unlike anywhere else in Cambodia. Join me John Saboe for an exploration in and around Battambang, Cambodia in this episode of Far East Adventure Travel Podcast.
Probably the number one site to visit in Battambang, Cambodia is the world-famous bamboo train. Made from left-over tank wheels, small-powered engines and a bamboo platform it’s a metaphor for the people of this country who’ve adapted and overcome incredible devastation and hardship to their culture and way of life. But this town, the second-largest in the country has so much more to offer. On my last trip through Cambodia I stayed in Battambang for several days exploring the town and discovering it’s charm.
To find out a little bit more about Battambang from a native’s perspective and why it’s so appealing I spoke with artist Kchao Touch, who also owns the wonderfully eclectic Jewel In The Lotus Antique and Arts Shop in the arts quarter.
The sounds of a memorial can quickly fade out to a wedding celebration, sometimes lasting for three days. Most Cambodian weddings are now only celebrated on a single day. This memorial in Battambang lasted for several days.
Another uniquely Southeast Asian tradition respected every day in Battambang is the morning alms. For good luck lay people bring a food offering to the local Buddhist monks that wander the town in return for a blessing.
A mix of well preserved and slowly fading French architecture along the river makes for some wonderful strolls beside the Sangkae. Battambang is also home to many Khmer artists and singers and has a burgeoning arts scene that has revitalized the historic quarter of town.
Further outside of Battambang there’s opportunity to experience traditional rural life and some significant sites like Wat Ek Phnom which includes it’s partly collapsed 11th century temple.
Like most people I took refuge riverside in the late afternoons to cool down and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the town over a drink and some food at the night market.
Although Battambang doesn’t offer many activities in the city itself you’ll have no hesitation just passing the time hanging out by the river or in a cool cafe in the arts quarter. Further away from Battambang more awaits for your discovery, some things distinctly and uniquely Cambodian.

Cambodia Waterfall and Temples including Banteay Srei north of Angkor Wat & Siem Reap
Fourth video in my mini Cambodia Travel Video series to show you Siem Reap, Angkor Wat and some of the temples and tourist sights around Angkor City. In this video I take a remork to a waterfall in Kbal Spean, about 2 hours north of the main Siem Reap and Angkor Wat complex. The area is beautiful and filled with butterflies. From the ticket entrance gate it is a 1.5km hike through the forest to the waterfall where there are carvings in the water and an imprint of Buddhas foot.
I paid an additional US$4 onto my day trip so that I could see this and also spend time exploring some of the temples north of Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, including one of my favourite temples of Angkor Banteay Srei.
Ask your remork driver for advice and take time to go and explore some of the lesser known temple ruins of Cambodia and Angkor.

Cambodia / Siem Reap - Psar Chas Old Market

Cambodia - Siem Reap / Local Markets
Psar Chas or the Old Market, is a must on every itinerary. Located at the south end of the old French Quarter, it springs to life in the early morning and stays open till dusk. It is where the action is and here you can buy almost anything from wood and silver carvings to postcards, camera film, notes and coins, T-shirts, placemats and fridge magnets. In the central courtyard where the wet market is, the butchers and vegetable sellers are in full force, hawking pig intestines, live crabs swimming in plastic buckets, vegetables nicely stacked in pyramids and pan-fried silkworm pupae for not more than a quarter.

TEMPLES IN CHIANG MAI - Why Women Can't Enter
There are almost 300 temples in Chiang Mai, Thailand. However, we share the Thai history behind why women can’t enter some of them. Watch to see our picks for the Top 3 temples in Chiang Mai, and which ones you can’t enter if you are a woman.
If you are coming to travel Thailand on holiday, it’s likely you won’t have nearly enough time to visit all 300 temples in Chiang Mai Thailand. So, we are sharing the 3 best temples in Chiang Mai you should visit to get the biggest diversity in styles and cultures.
The first temple we visited was the Silver Temple Chiang Mai. This temple was easily the most unique temple we have ever seen and it sat beside a silversmith village. The entire temple was plated in silver and metal in 2008 as a tribute to the heavy influence silver had on northern Thai history. So, you’re wondering which temples women can’t enter? The Silver temple is one of them. We love sharing facts about Thailand when we come across them, and this was a piece of Thailand information we could not pass up. As we arrived at the silver temple, sure enough we were greeted with a big “Women can’t enter silver temple” sign. The history behind this Thai rule stems from an old Buddhist rule that states the presence of a woman can disrupt relics and energy that are found throughout the temples. If a women does enter one of the temples in Thailand that is marked as forbidden, it is said they will experience bodily harm.
The next temple is called Wat Chedi Luang and it’s one of the most popular places to visit in Chiang Mai due to it’s central proximity in the Old City. Wat Chedi Luang is a standing piece of Thai history, as it survived an earthquake in the early 1500’s which demolished the top half of the pagoda. One of the more interesting facts about Thailand originated here with a tree planted centuries ago right next to Wat Chedi Luang. It is said that the tree is the protector of the region and if it falls, a big catastrophe will take place.
One of the last, and arguably most magnificent, temples in Chiang Mai we visited was Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. This temple is on everyones list of the top things to do in Chiang Mai. The Doi Suthep Temple is one of the holiest buddhist temples in all of the world, as it is said to hold the shoulder bone of Buddha himself. This makes Wat Phra That Doi Suthep a popular buddhist pilgrimage site and also one of the most culturally rich places to see while you travel Thailand.
If you guys enjoyed seeing our Top 3 list of the best temples in Chiang Mai, give this video a thumbs up! Which temples are you planning on visiting? Are you upset by the Buddhist rule that women can’t enter some temples? We are living in Chiang Mai Thailand for 2 months, so be sure to stick around and see more Thailand travel vlogs. If you want to learn more facts about Thailand, go see our Thailand travel vlogs in Bangkok and Southern Thailand. Also, don’t forget to leave us a comment down below, subscribe, and tell us which temple was your favorite! We will see you guys in the next video. Seeya!

TOP 3 TEMPLES IN CHIANG RAI - Thailand White Temple & More!
Here are the Top 3 Temples in Chiang Rai you must see while visiting! Seeing the famous Thailand White Temple was a bucket list item as it’s regarded as one of the best temples in Thailand. But, there is more to Chiang Rai than just the White Temple. Find out which temples you need to visit by watching our Top 3 picks!
After visiting dozens of traditional Thai temples throughout our travels, we decided to visit the unique and unconventional temples during our trip to Chiang Rai. Our first stop, bright and early, was to the famous Thailand White Temple, also known as Wat Rong Khun. It is an absolute necessity to arrive at the Chiang Rai White Temple early, 8am to be exact, to avoid the massive amounts of crowds that surround the temple around early afternoon. The White Temple is owned by a popular artist from Chiang Rai Thailand who has grown to be one of the most influential artists in the country. Although the Wat Rong Khun is not traditional, it is one of the most unique Thailand temples in existence. The Chiang Rai White Temple is open from 8am-6pm and costs 50 Baht to enter.
Our second stop of the day was the Chiang Rai Blue Temple, also known as Wat Rong Seur Ten. We put this on our list of top 3 temples in Chiang Rai because of the sheer artistry that went into creating this temple. In fact, the Blue Temple in Chiang Rai was created by an artist who was a student of the creator of the White Temple. For that reason, you will see similar styles of art between the two temples. The most impressive aspect of the Blue Temple was easily the inside. Unlike the White Temple, you can film and take pictures inside of the Blue Temple. Wow, were we happy about that! The inside of Wat Rong Seur Ten is something out of a Michelangelo painting, it’s that amazing. The entire inside, along with every inch of wall and ceiling is completely covered in amazing mural art and religious design. It’s a sight to behold. The Chiang Rai Blue Temple is open from 8am-8pm and has a free admission.
Lastly, we visited the Chiang Rai Black House, which isn’t a temple per say but rather a museum. Many people also call this the “Black Temple” because most of it’s buildings are designed in a Thai temple style. The Black House is the lifetime collection of yet another famous Thai artist which he leaves on display for tourists traveling through Chiang Rai. The Black House grounds actually consist of 40 buildings on a vast landscape, so crowds aren’t really an issue unlike the other two temples. The Black House has the most expensive admission at 80 Baht per person, and is open from 9am-5pm.
If you have any questions about the top 3 temples in Chiang Rai please leave a comment down below and we will respond as soon as possible. We highly recommend seeing all three locations including the Thailand White Temple, Blue Temple, Black House and it’s grounds. We hope you enjoyed our latest Chiang Rai Thailand travel vlog.
