Mongolia solo horse trekking
Shot on the 4k Action Cam from Sony. Check it out at
Overcoming a fear of horses I travelled to Mongolia to purchase some horses and teach myself how to ride solo through the mountains. With little communication other than hand gestures and a sketch book made my travels very interesting. With the kindness of the Kazakh and Mongolian I got taught falconry from the eagle hunters and horse mastery.

ROADS:
Of the 50,000km of roadways in Mongolia, only about 10% are paved. This means that most of the time you’re either traveling by dirt road, or you’re off roading all together. At first we thought that the lack of pavement would slow us down, but we were wrong. Very, very wrong.
KHONGOR SAND DUNES:
When we arrived at our camp, we were awe struck by the towering dunes just a few hundred meters away. The dunes are simply massive… running for a length of 180 kilometers over a total area of nearly 350 square miles… This place instantly became our favorite camp of the entire trip, and we were eager to ascend the dunes. But first, we had other business to attend to…The sounds of the shifting sand blown by the wind has given Khongor the nickname “Singing Sand Dunes”, and at 300 meters high we were mentally unprepared for how difficult it would be to climb. Every single step forward caused the sand to shift backwards so it was quite literally an uphill battle. It took a solid 45 minutes of fighting to conquer this behemoth but like everything in life, the harder the fight the greater the reward.

Opening:
After nearly a year of backpacking around Asia, we found ourselves rolling into Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia, a country synonymous with Genghis Khan (known as Chinggis Khan in Mongolia) , wide open spaces, and Nomadic life. Of the 3 million people that call Mongolia home, nearly half live in UB, making it the cultural, financial and industrial center of Mongolia, so it’s no surprise that this city is the first stop for most foreign visitors. In our case, we entered the country from China after a 48 hour marathon of bus and train travel that started from Beijing, so as soon as we arrived, the ONLY thing we could think about was to getting to the nearest hostel to sleep. So we did. For 2 days.
Leaving UB:
Once we got our strength up we did some research and found that our hostel was offering a tour of the gobi desert as well as other parts of central Mongolia; a journey that would take 16 days; we’d decided to go with 6 other travelers that we’d met a couple of days beforehand, but with only one day to prepare and zero winter clothes, we desperately needed to gear up...
Market:
“Naran Tuul zach (зах or Khar Zakh)” is a sprawling flea market where you can find wall clocks, linoleum flooring and just about anything else. The market has gained a bad reputation among locals and foreigners alike for being a pickpocket’s haven, so with such a rough exterior and shady nickname like “black market”, we figured we’d be able to bargain our way into some amazing deal, but we soon discovered that this wasn’t the case...
Lunch:
Because Mongolian culture is based on livestock farming, the traditional diet consists of meat, flour and dairy with mutton being the meat of choice. Mongolian winters are extremely harsh so a lot of animal fat is consumed during winter and more dairy products during the summer.
Closing:
What… a… day. It was a long journey, but the scenery was stunning and the Mongolian countryside made quite the first impression on us. But this was only just the beginning and we couldn’t wait to see what the next 15 days would bring...

When travelling in Mongolia, we decided the easiest solution to getting around was travelling with Dragoman Tours. Dragoman is an overland tour company that specialises in 'off the beaten path' type travel so they're perfect for Mongolia.
This video shows you snippets from the first few days of our overland tour in Mongolia. So you'll get to see what it's really like on tour with Dragoman.
A typical day with Dragoman in Mongolia involves packing up camp, eating breakfast, getting on the truck (Tallulah) for a few hours, stopping somewhere for lunch (and usually seeing something cool), jumping back on the truck for a few more hours, finding a campsite, having dinner, then sitting around a campfire.
#dragoman #mongolia #travelmongolia
Our first few days didn't quite go to plan due to an unforeseeable quarantine section, but our awesome guides sorted everything out and we even got to see some things we would have missed otherwise. We didn't stay in a yurt this time around, but there'll be more in future episodes.
FULL PLAYLIST:
Mongolia is a country like no other. It's like travelling back in time. With a population of only 3 million - half of which live in the only major city (Ulan-Bator) - Mongolia can be difficult to travel. With this in mind, we jumped on a tour with a UK based company - Dragoman Overland. It was SO worth it. These guys were great. We can't imagine seeing and experiencing Mongolia any other way.

Mongolia Gobi Desert Road Trip
Our 7 day road trip in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia has been one of our favorite experiences on our around the world trip. At read in detail about our unforgettable 7 days and 6 nights sleeping in Gers (Yurts) in below freezing temperatures, climbing the highest sand dunes in Mongolia, riding on camels and touching 4,000 year old petroglyphs.
Mongolia - Land of the Blue Sky
The most exciting part of Kodamasia Adventure started : using train to reach St Petersburg from Beijing. But before reaching Russia, there is a country that MUST be visited on the way: MONGOLIA.
Going to Mongolia was one of my dream. This country seems very unique: it was the biggest empire of the History of humanity, it’s 3 times bigger than France and 20 times less populated, it’s -40° in winter and +30° in summer, there are more horses than humans, there is the lowest density of population on Earth, and a natural diversity pretty uncommon on Earth, and half of the population living a nomadic life in the nature. For all of these reasons, travelling to Mongolia is something unique.
It took us around 48 hours to reach Oulan Bator (Ulaanbaatar), the Mongolian capital, from Beijing. To go from Beijing to Mongolia, we took a bus during 12hours from Beijing to the Mongolian border, then we used a “passer” (a guy that takes you in his car) to cross the border between China and Mongolia, and we took a Mongolian night train during 16 hours to cross whole country. This train ride was the most beautiful we ever had: crossing infinite green lands, the semi gobi desert, seeing so many animals and nomadic houses…
We stayed a few days in the capital city before going for a tour in the countryside. Ulaanbaatar is a big city, where half of the country population is living. Very contrasted between the developed city center, and the almost slums surrounding the city. You eat very good food there (nightmare for vegetarians), people are nice, there air is clean, and nightlife is awesome. We were staying at Sunpath Hostel, which organised us our tours in the countryside. This hostel is from far the best in UB, due to the kindness and professionalism of the staff. Top 3 hostels in my whole trip so far.
But you don’t go to Mongolia to experience UB. The main point of going to Mongolia is to explore the nature which is unique in the world.
Most of the hostels are also tour organizers. I opted for a week tour in the Orkhon Valley, green land of horses and nomadic people. During this tour, we slept every night in gers (traditional Mongolian “tents”), with nomadic families and real nomadic conditions. Our guide, Doggy, was cooking for us Mongolian food every night. Every day we were driving hundreds of kilometres on very bumpy roads to reach other places. We did horse ridind in paradisiac landscapes, camel riding in the semi Gobi Desert, saw some waterfalls, wild horses, and so many animals everywhere. This experience was the best I could have and I recommend it to everyone. 1 week is not long, I would have done more if I knew in advance how time would fly during this experience…
I had very high expectations before to go to Mongolia, and I’ve not been disappointed a minute. This country is UNIQUE, and the experience there is the best I could have. I recommend it to everyone who wants to live an amazing experience in a completely different place than what he already knows. Everything has been perfect and now I’m sure of one thing: I’ll be back to Mongolia soon!

Horse Trek in Mongolia | 4 day tour
#9 Kelit vaihtelevat paljon, joten lämmin kerrospukeutuminen on suositeltavaa.
#12 Vaelluksen varrella nukutaan paimentolaisperheiden jurtissa.

More about the Gobi Desert:
The Gobi Desert is a large desert region in Asia. It covers parts of northern and northwestern China, and of southern Mongolia. The desert basins of the Gobi are bounded by the Altai Mountains and the grasslands and steppes of Mongolia on the north, by the Taklamakan Desert to the west, by the Hexi Corridor and Tibetan Plateau to the southwest, and by the North China Plain to the southeast. The Gobi is notable in history as part of the great Mongol Empire, and as the location of several important cities along the Silk Road.

It was a hell of an experience. Extremely thankful and blessed for this adventure of a lifetime. Especially grateful for my girls - Xenia, Shu Wen and Vernice for making this trip happen, even though we're city girls. Gobi Desert was beautiful and breathtaking; the skies, the dunes, mountains and animals.
We traveled with Golden Gobi Tours, and all our meals and accommodation were provided. Meals were cooked by our guide as well.
I'll make a blog post of this trip real soon :-)

For Mongolian Midwest trekking, first you have to go to Haarhom in central Mongolian highlands. By the time I lost my mind to the unfolded meadow, the guide showed me the Mongolian camel. The Mongolian camel is a bivalve camel inhabiting the northern East Asian grassland. Forte, Forte, Forte The camel 'Forte' that has come to us so much. He has a lot of charm as well as curiosity. If it is candy, it kisses anyone. The camel, who could not stand the candy, asked the microphone of the camera. Mike had no taste. Camels are useful livestock, sometimes called desert belly, because they are strong. I decided to ride the camel once. It seems easy, but it is quite high because the height is almost 2m. It was a sweet time with a camel that made travelers feet on the barren road.

Setup:
Our first night spent in a ger was officially in the books! That morning the camp was full of activity as the family was preparing for their son’s wedding. A Mongolian country-side wedding can last anywhere from 3-10 days with the grooms parent’s building the couple a new ger and the bride’s parents providing the furniture. It was so interesting to see all this unfold and as much fun as it would been to attend a 10 day long Mongolian party, we had to hit the road
Buddhist Monastery:
While en route to meet up with our new guide, we made a quick stop off at a buddhist monastery out in the middle of nowhere. we wandered around the place checking out various religious artifacts, including a large stockpile of hundred year old Tibetan sutras until we were befriended by a young monk who was more than eager to tell us more about his faith
Buddhism has been around in Mongolia since the 16th century when the Mongolian ruler Altan Kahn was converted by Tibetan lamas. Today, many religions are practiced throughout the country, but over half the population still identifies themselves as Buddhists. At it’s core, buddhism is the understanding that suffering and dissatisfaction originate in the way your mind responds to life’s circumstances. Buddhism provides it’s followers with a set of systematic techniques to have self-control over your own negative thoughts and desires. Happiness, Buddha once said, is actually quite simple: The secret is to want what you have and not want what you don't have. A good reminder, no matter what you do… or don’t believe
After Lunch:
After lunch, we took off into the gobi desert bound for our big destination of the day, a place called white stupa. Admittedly, we had know idea what that was or what to expect, but we were making great time… until we discovered that the Mongolian wilderness hates it when you’re making great time.
WHITE STUPA / Tsagaan Suvarga
White stupa is a massive 400 meter long cliff that was formed around 10 million years ago when it was covered by a sea. Over the millennia the sea dried up and the erosion eventually created distinctive looking structures known as escarpments. The erosion also exposed the different ores in the soil that when met with oxygen create the brilliant colors of white, yellow and purple. The top of the 40 meter high cliff is mostly covered with loose rocks so it made walking around near the edge a little freaky. Ancient hunters used this fact to their advantage by driving herds of gazelles over the edge for a sure kill. We could’ve easily spent all day there walking around in awe, but the sun was beginning to set and we still had to make it to our camp for the night. We were excited to meet a new nomadic family and experience the infamous Mongolian hospitality.

Two-humped camel riding experience in Mongolia
Two-humped camel riding experience in Mongolia in October 2016. Our group took a 4WD van to the east from Ulaanbaatar to the mini Gobi Desert called Elsen Tasarkhai and Khugnu Khan Mountain. Here we had a fun activity of riding two-humped fluffy camels and visiting local nomadic family. They served delicious Mongolian vegetable soup. This is one of the must tour activity in Mongolia. The landscape is fascinating, too.
