Torrential Rain Triggers Flash Flooding in Washington D.C. Beltway
A slow-moving rainstorm Monday washed out roads, stranded drivers and soaked basements, including the White House’s, during a chaotic morning commute in the national capital region.
Water gushed into the press workspace in the basement near the White House’s West Wing. Government employees worked to drain puddles of standing water with wet vacs.
National Weather Service meteorologist Cody Ledbetter said the storm dumped about 6.3 inches of rain near Frederick, Maryland, about 4.5 inches near Arlington, Virginia, and about 3.4 inches at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in a two-hour period.
“The storm was not moving very quickly,” Ledbetter said.
Water levels at Cameron Run in Alexandria, Virginia, a flood-prone area along the Capital Beltway, rose more than 7 feet over 30 minutes after 9 a.m., according to the weather service. Four Mile Run, which runs through Arlington and Alexandria, saw a similar increase.
Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the fire department in Montgomery County, Maryland, said emergency workers used boats for dozens of rescues, plucking people from flooded cars.
“Everywhere I turned, there was traffic and roads closed,” he said.
Piringer said he didn’t immediately receive any reports of storm-related injuries.
In northern Virginia, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said it responded to more than 30 calls for swift water rescues throughout the county. Authorities advised people to avoid driving if possible. Neighboring Arlington County also reported numerous rescues.
Gretchen Eisenberg’s morning 4-mile commute usually lasts about 10 minutes. It took her nearly an hour to drive to work from her Frederick home. She stopped to shoot eye-popping video of a Frederick park inundated with raging floodwaters.
“I tried to take my normal route, but I had to turn around and take a different way in because of the flooding,” she said.

STORYLINE:
VIENNA, Va. (AP) _ The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee closed roads, schools and a commuter rail line in waterlogged northern Virginia, and a retaining wall was brought down near a townhome complex, forcing evacuations.
At least four people have died in the Mid-Atlantic region because of the flooding.
Two men and a boy died Thursday night in three separate incidents in Fairfax County, where nearly 10 inches of rain fell in 24 hours, officials said.
In Maryland, the Susquehanna River reached a 15-year high of 32.4 feet Friday at the Conowingo Dam and was expected to remain near that level into the night, the National Weather Service said. Dam gates were opened to relieve pressure on the river.
Across the Baltimore-Washington area, flood waters inundated sewage-treatment plants.
Maryland''s congressional delegation asked the White House to declare a federal emergency so the state can apply for federal disaster aid.
More rain Friday added to the 13.5 inches that the region has endured since Monday. Sun was forecast Sunday for the first time in a week.
Commuters confronted scores of road closures and a complete shutdown of the Virginia Railway Express. The railroad, which serves suburbs south and east of Washington, said parts of both lines were under water and the track bed was washed out in at least one spot.
Trains were delayed Friday on Maryland''s MARC commuter rail lines.
About 150 people were evacuated Thursday night in Prince William County, Va., mostly from mobile home parks along U.S. 1 in the Woodbridge area after Marumsco Creek overflowed.
A four-tiered 50-foot retaining wall partially gave way behind a nearby townhome complex, forcing some evacuations there, county spokesman Jason Grant said.
It was like Niagara Falls said resident Felipe Bastos.
Fairfax County Police said 12-year-old Jake Donaldson died after he was swept away by flood waters in the backyard of his Fair Oaks home Thursday evening.
Arsalan Hakiri, 67, of Reston, was swept away along with his car and drowned when he tried to leave the vehicle, police said.
On Friday, Fairfax County Police released details from a third death Thursday night. Galo Sebastian Salvador Vinueza, 25, of Lorton died after he abandoned his car and tried to cross a flooded bridge on foot, police said. The road was where some of the worst flooding in northern Virginia occurred.
Military personnel found his body Friday on Nearby Fort Belvoir.
On Wednesday, Daniel Lambert, 49, of Pasadena, Md., died in flood waters.
In the flood-prone Huntington neighborhood near Alexandria, Cameron Run surged from its banks and covered some streets with eight feet of water even as people were preparing to move their cars. Homes in the neighborhood are on hills above street level.
It came really quickly, Betsy Thompson said.
Eric Bottary said it was eerie watching the water rise from a basement window: It looks like a submarine because it''s submerged in water.
Saul Romero borrowed a plastic storage bin to float his 2-year-old daughter up the street to dry land.
I was just worried for my daughter, he said, as he and others used hoses to wash inches of slimy mud off their sidewalks.
The same flash flood closed part of the Interstate 495, the Capital Beltway, overnight.
It''s still a serious flood, but it''s looking pretty good, Dixon said.

CORRECTION: There is an incorrect lyric in the video. It should read Blood lust AND a holy war not Blood lust IN a holy war. Shit happens when you're pulling all nighters and chasing deadlines. Because of our inability to fix this now that the video has been launched it will unfortunately live this way FOREVER. Hopefully people wont come to the shows for the next decade or two singing the wrong lyric but if they do we will always know why. Thx!
LYRICS:
DO YOU BELIEVE?
WALK ON WATER
CAN YOU EVEN SEE WHAT YOU’RE FIGHTING FOR?
BLOOD LUST AND A HOLY WAR
LISTEN UP, HEAR THE PATRIOT SHOUT
TIMES ARE CHANGING
IN THE END THE CHOICE WAS CLEAR
TAKE A SHOT IN THE FACE OF FEAR
FIST UP IN THE FIRING LINE
TIMES ARE CHANGING
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN WALK ON WATER?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN WIN THIS FIGHT TONIGHT?
(DO YOU BELIEVE?)
LOOK AT THE SKY SEE A DYING STAR
WHITE LIES, IT'S A MAN ON FIRE
MAKING LOVE WITH THE DEVIL HURTS
TIMES ARE CHANGING
A THIN LINE
THE WHOLE TRUTH
THE FAR RIGHT
THE LEFT VIEW
BREAKING ALL THOSE PROMISES MADE
TIMES ARE CHANGING
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN WALK ON WATER?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN WIN THIS FIGHT TONIGHT?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN WALK ON WATER?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN WIN THIS FIGHT TONIGHT?
DO YOU BELIEVE?
WALK ON WATER
DO YOU BELIEVE?
WALK ON WATER
DO YOU BELIEVE?
WALK ON WATER
DO YOU BELIEVE?
WALK ON WATER
DO YOU BELIEVE?
WALK ON WATER

LU softball team splits doubleheader against SE Louisiana
BEAUMONT, Texas Ashley McDowell hit home runs in both
games to help the Lamar Lady Cardinals earn a split with visiting Southeastern
Louisiana in Southland Conference softball action at Ford Park on Saturday.
McDowells two-run home run in the opening game proved to be
the game-winner as Lamar (19-26 overall, 10-7 Southland) rallied for a 7-6
victory. McDowell had a solo home run in the nightcap, but it wasnt enough to
overcome Southeastern Louisianas school-record seven home runs as the Lady
Lions 26-15, 9-8) claimed a 13-5 win.
McDowells homers gave her the team lead with nine, one
ahead of Candyce Carter and Beverly Corry.
The split allowed Lamar to remain in a third-place tie with
Sam Houston State, a game head of Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls in the
standings.
Sunday will be big, Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. We
know it wont be easy, because Southeastern Louisiana can hit.
Lamar had early leads of 3-0 and 5-3 in the opener only to
see Southeastern Louisiana take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Thats
when Lamar struck for its fourth straight come-from-behind conference win.
Shannon Millman hit a two-out single and was replaced by pinch runner Lauren
Gambone. Gambone didnt have to do much running as she trotted around the bases
ahead of McDowell, who crushed a home run to center field.
Millman (13-10) then re-entered the game to nail down her
ninth conference win of the year. Millman also homered in the game, while
Carter drove in two runs.
Lamar fell into an early 6-2 hole in the nightcap before
cutting the Southeastern Louisiana lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth
inning with the bases loaded and one out, but Lamar couldnt take the lead.
Southeastern Louisiana put the game away with seven runs in the top of the
sixth.
I thought we were going to have another come-from-behind
win when we cut it to 6-5, Bruder said. But its tough to always have to
battle back.
Schulz also homered in the game, but took the loss to fall
to 4-10. Casey Cromwell drove in a pair of runs for Lamar.
Katie Doyle and Kayla Elswick had two home runs apiece in
the second game for the Lady Lions. Rachael Hellyer (11-1) got the win,
allowing eight hits and five runs, all earned in 4 1/3 innings. Taylor Bishop
pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for her first save.
Tickets for
Sundays game will be available at Ford Park on a cash-only basis starting at 1
p.m.
