Campal is a town situated approximately at a distance of 4 km from Panjim came to be known as Campal named after 'Campal de Dom Manuel', after Father of Panjim, Dom Manuel de Portugal e Castro who developed it as a commercial area in 1830.The area divided into residential and commercial parts actually starts from the end of the medical college and the road that leads you to Campal is now called ‘Dayanand Bandodkar Marg’, named after the death of first Chief Minister of Goa. As you get to Campal, on the road opposite to the river, there is a big old cannon to the left side that measures about four meters long. In the year 1512, in attempting to capture Goa, it was guarded by Ismail Adil Khan. Just a bit further is a garden in which there is a statue built in 1929 of Francisco Luis Gomes who was a representative in the Cortes, the ‘Lisbon Parliament’ and also the former best advocate not only for Goa but for India too.
