Going Home - Fallen Soldier Bagpipe Tribute
Going Home has become a standard bagpipe song played at funerals, both military and civilian, for years. In fact, as we carried my own grandmum out of the funeral home to the hearse, a piper played it for her. I'm a former soldier, and far too many of the best & brightest young people who have gone in harm's way to protect our freedoms have paid the ultimate price for us. Not just Americans, but our allies, too. Never forget... Also, I picked the nations represented with great care. I was an American soldier, and so I chose Americans. The bagpipes are associated with the UK and their Commonwealth allies, so I picked the Brits, Scots & ANZACs. I have Polish and Canadian ancestry, so I chose to represent Poland and Canada. I served in Germany, and so I chose to represent them as well. So, please stop complaining that your country was left out. I understand and appreciate that many, many other nations have served bravely and have sacrificed their sons & daughters. Go make your own video if it bothers you so much.
Normandy cemetery maintained to 'highest standard'
(28 May 2019) Near Omaha Beach, the beauty of the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer strikes any visitor entering the site, with its immaculate lawns, majestic pines, commanding view of the Atlantic and row upon row of pristine white crosses.
The cemetery contains 9,380 graves, most of them for servicemen who lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations.
Another 1,557 names are inscribed on the Walls of the Missing.
Alain Dupain, 61, is a gardener who has worked at the cemetery for 35 years, maintaining the grounds with a team of 20 people.
We work for the families. When they come, we want the site to be perfect for them, he told The Associated Press.
The site receives approximately 1 million visitors each year.
Superintendent Scott Desjardins, of the American Battle Monuments Commission, said the top priority is to keep this site at the highest standards possible.
It is the promise we made to the families who decided to keep their loved ones with us, he said.
It overrides every other priority.
Normandy has more than 20 military cemeteries holding mostly Americans, Germans, French, British, Canadians and Polish.
Karen Lancelle, 42, who grew up in Colleville-sur-Mer, has been a guide at the cemetery for 12 years.
She said the memory of the battle is still alive among children in the region thanks to frequent school visits and family stories told by older generations.
The cemetery is a place where meetings can happen between the veterans and the youngest ones.
Nearly every day brings some kind of touching moment with American families, she said.
While visiting the cemetery, Vietnam veteran Tom Woolbright, 75, from Fort Worth, Texas, said he was thankful to the people of France for maintaining and for honoring the men who died in the D-Day landings.
France is a beautiful country, a wonderful country and we thank the French for their effort of, honouring the men in such a beautiful fashion.

100 Years of Heroes: Celebrating Pennsylvania Veterans
From Memorial Day to Veterans Day PennLive.com will be celebrating the contributions of Pennsylvania Veterans, follow all of our coverage at PennLive.com
100yearsofheroes.com
pennlive.com
We will be following the stories of Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, National Guard, and Coast Guard veterans and their families.
Beginning Memorial Day and running through Veterans Day, PennLive will recognize those who served our country, and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day in a special report called 100 Years of Heroes.
The 24-week project includes work from PennLive reporters, photographers and videographers who tell the stories of veterans with a Pennsylvania connection, from the Revolutionary War to World War II through Vietnam and up through the Gulf War and The War in Afghanistan.
The project coincides with the the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I - called Armistice Day and which is now celebrated as Veterans Day. The special project is sponsored by Giant Food Stores.
Many of the people we interviewed for this project saw combat duty, from Iwo Jima to Normandy and Saigon to the Berlin Wall.
Dick Donald saw the flag go up over Mount Suribachi. Rich Adams, a helicopter pilot, won the Distinguished Flying Cross for action in Iraq in 2007. Stephanie Reid was deployed in 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service while leading 35 combat convoy missions in Iraq. Dr, Eugene Richardson was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African-American military pilots who fought in World War II.
But we know the involvement of veterans involves many other duties, so we found a number of others who are part of the fabric of protecting and serving our country, or recognizing those who did.
Elaine Berkowitz, her career spent in dentistry, recently retired from the Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel with 38 years of service. She deployed four times and has accumulated numerous medals and awards. Concetta Gillen was one of the Rosie the Riveter women who supported the war effort in the 1940s by joining the workforce. Kevin Wagner isn't a veteran per se, but as a teacher at Carlisle High School he has started the Silent Heroes project for his AP classes, his work enabling the recognition of both World War II and Vietnam veterans who are from Pennsylvania.
Our reporters drove as far as Arlington National Cemetery for a burial to Pittsburgh for several interviews and to Philadelphia for interviews and tours of the Chapel of the Four Chaplains and the new Museum of the American Revolution.
As you follow this project, you'll notice that the stories don't cover entire careers but are targeted to specific moments or incidents that provide snapshots of what service, and sacrifice, truly mean.
We know, even after several months of phone calls and networking, that we've identified a miniscule sample of the hundreds of thousands of veterans with a connection to Pennsylvania. So if you think you have a great story to tell, or know someone that does, please contact me at 717.255.8404 or email me at pvigna@pennlive.com.
Videographer Mark Pynes, who came up with the idea, and colleague Dan Zampogna along with several PennLive writers already have done a lot of filming and writing for this project, but we are open to other suggestions that capture the war veteran and all that he and she stand for.
We hope you enjoy this rollout as much as we have had assembling it.

God Bless the USA - I'm Proud to be an American~ Lee Greenwood Lyrics
Thanks to all the brave service men and women. I hope everyone is proud to be an American. I know I am.
As much as I believe in freedom of speech this is still my channel and I dont appreciate the rude and obnoxious comments I have been reading lately. This song is dedicated to the soldiers. Please DO NOT make this into an argumentative song, whether you come from the country or believe in the country's morals or laws RESPECT THE SONG! Im sick of being tolerant of people who shouldnt be listening to the song in the first place.
That is all. Thank you to all the people who have nicely supported this video whether or not you believe the US is doing something good or bad. Thanks again!
