London's Canals and Waterways
In this video we explore some of the canal and river walks of London, starting off along Regents Canal at Danbury Street. The legacy left by the old canal network allows Londoners to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city to enjoy a relaxed waterside walk. The colorful canal boats moored two abreast are home for many people who live and work in the city. We see boats and people meandering slowly in the middle of a busy town where everyone else is in a rush. The flats, homes and apartments lining the banks offer a fascinating insight into architectural styles over the last two centuries from elegant Edwardian town houses to eye catching modern apartment blocks. We stop to appreciate some of the old canal infrastructure at City Road Lock, Sturt’s Lock and Kingsland Basin, all once part of a vital transport system, now home to hundreds of houseboats. We leave the canal at Kingsland Road to catch a London Overground train to Shadwell from where we walk towards Wapping and Tobacco Dock, a preserved reminder of the part played by canals and the River Thames in transporting goods from all over the world. The water way from Tobacco Dock to Hermitage Basin is aptly named Ornamental Canal, reflecting its present day status as a quiet oasis surrounded by beautifully presented modern town houses. Where boats once moored are pleasant walkways and the only movement on the canal is wildfowl. After Hermitage Basin we cross Wapping High Street to walk Easterly next to the River Thames where the old Docklands and associated buildings have been transformed into a largely residential area, many of the old warehouses have been retained and adapted for new rolls as homes, offices, restaurants and bars, such as Captain Kidds Pub, an ideal spot for a beer whilst watching river life on the Thames. After a welcome beer we make our way to Shadwell Basin and Shadwell station (Docklands railway) to catch a train to Bank from where we walk along King William Street to London Bridge and the River Thames. The fast changing London skyline can be fully appreciated from the banks of the river as new Glass and steel towers reach for the sky, glinting in the evening sunlight, whilst the river boats transporting everything from people to waste ply their way up and down the surprisingly fast flowing river. Finally we see the sun setting over London’s Bridges, bringing a most enjoyable day to a fitting end.

Cruise Ride - The River Thames (London)
DescriptionThe River Thames, known alternatively in parts as the Isis, is a river that flows through southern England including London. At 215 miles, it is the longest river entirely in England and the second-longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn. It flows through Oxford, Reading, Henley-on-Thames and Windsor.
Cruise England's Royal River Aboard the 8 passenger Hotel Barge Magna Carta | European Waterways
Magna Carta is one of the finest, most luxurious vessels cruising the British Isles today. The ambience created by combining a traditional 1936-built barge hull with fine mahogany, teak and oak woods is outstanding.
Modern amenities include underfloor heating, spa pool and contemporary en suite facilities for the four spacious 200sq ft suites. The upper deck saloon and dining area feature picture windows and stylish furnishings.
Your Master Chef produces a range of mouth-watering dishes whilst you enjoy the riverside surroundings from your floating country hotel.
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especiallly on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers. This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans.
The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!
European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands. The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.
Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.
River Thames Cruise - London
One of the most pleasant and relaxing ways to travel in London is by cruise boat on the River Thames. Boats take travelers to the Tower of London and on to Greenwich while all along the river the boat captain points out interesting sights and shares some of the history of this great city. Taking a cruise on the Thames is a nice break from the often frantic pace of touring and a lovely way to see the great city.

Southampton, England. Best Time To Travel
Southampton is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire, England. Southampton is noted for its association with the Titanic. It is the home port of a number of the largest cruise ships in the world.
LOCATION
It is 70 miles (110 km) south-west of London and 15 miles (24 km) west north-west of Portsmouth. Southampton is a major port and the closest city to the New Forest. It lies at the northernmost point of Southampton Water at the confluence of the Rivers Test and Itchen. Southampton is influenced by the sea and rivers. The River Test runs along the western border of the city, separating it from the New Forest.
HISTORY
Archaeological finds suggest that the area has been inhabited since the stone age. Southampton has been a settlement since Roman and Saxon times. It was an important trading port and defensive outpost of Winchester. The Anglo-Saxons formed a new, larger, settlement across the Itchen centred on what is now the St Mary's area of the city. In 1912, the RMS Titanic sailed from Southampton.
CLIMATE
As with the rest of the UK, Southampton experiences an oceanic climate. Southampton is one of the warmest and sunniest cities in the United Kingdom, mainly due to its southerly, low-lying and sheltered location. Winters in Southampton are damp and rainy weather but not cold. The city is usually snow-covered 2-3 days annually. Nights can remain cold well into May. Summers are moderately warm and usually not rainy. Damp days however do happen even in July.
COMMUNICATION
Southampton is serviced by Southampton International Airport located a short distance outside the city in Eastleigh. It is a relatively small airport. From the airport, bus U1C goes to the city centre. The alternative is to use one of the London airports and travel on to Southampton by rail, car or bus.
ECONOMY
health and education sectors are main economy of Southampton. property and other business are 2nd sector and the third-largest sector is wholesale and retail. Southampton has always been a port, and the docks have long been a major employer in the city. In particular, it is a port for cruise ships as well as being the largest freight port on the Channel coast and fourth-largest UK port. Southampton is home to the headquarters of both the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

TV Journalist Quits His Job to Live on a Tiny House Boat & Cruise UK Canals Full-Time
In this video, we meet David Johns, a former TV journalist from the UK who quit his job, sold his house, and bought a narrowboat to cruise the canal network. His plan was to try being a live aboard for a year. He’s been living aboard for 9 months so far and he’s still happy with his decision and loves being part of the friendly, helpful narrowboat community.
Watch this video to take a tour of David's narrowboat, learn how he earns an income as a freelance journalist, where he “parks” his boat, and about the joys & challenges of life afloat.
David has been documenting his journey living on a boat with a regular vlog on his YouTube channel: Cruising the Cut ( With his experience as a TV journalist, the videos are extremely well filmed and edited, and they're a real pleasure to watch.
We were excited when he sent us his interview footage because we learned so much about this alternative lifestyle that he’s trying out. We love the idea of living in a tiny house on the water and of being able to explore from the comfort of your own home (a lot like living in a van!).
Thanks for watching!

1700miles in a tiny speedboat - Part1
After months of restoring the old rigid inflatable speedboat we are attempting to go all the way around the UK. Circumnavigation is 1700 miles, which is a long way in a boat that's only 4m long.
We start in London and head along the River thames before heading South East and down towards Margate, Ramsgate and on to Dover and Eastbourne.
We stop to look at the wreckage of the SS Richard Montgomery, a sunken world war 2 ammunition ship. More on that here:
More coming in part 2.
