Places to see in ( London - UK ) Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf is a major business district in east London, England, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Canary Wharf is one of the United Kingdom's two main financial centres – along with the traditional City of London – and contains many of Europe's tallest buildings, including the second-tallest in the UK, One Canada Square.
Canary Wharf contains around 16,000,000 square feet (1,500,000 m2) of office and retail space, of which around 7,900,000 square feet (730,000 m2) is owned by Canary Wharf Group. Around 105,000 people work in Canary Wharf, and Canary Wharf is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major banks, professional services firms, and media organisations, including Barclays, Citigroup, Clifford Chance, Credit Suisse, EY, Fitch Ratings, HSBC, Infosys, J.P. Morgan, KPMG, MetLife, Moody's, Morgan Stanley, RBC, S&P Global, Skadden, State Street, and Thomson Reuters.
Canary Wharf is located on the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. From 1802 to 1939, the area was one of the busiest docks in the world. After the 1960s, the port industry began to decline, leading to all the docks being closed by 1980. Of the three main docks of the West India Docks, the Canary Wharf estate occupies part of the north side and the entire south side of the Import Dock (North Dock), both sides of the Export Dock (Middle Dock) and the north side of the South Dock.
The Canary Wharf developers played a pro-active role in improving transport links, which they recognised as essential to the success of the project. Beginning in 1985, they proposed extension of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Bank, and upgrading of frequencies and capacity. The DLR now serves three stations in the area: West India Quay, Canary Wharf, Heron Quays. In 1988, they proposed construction of a second rail line to Docklands, which ultimately became the Jubilee Line Extension. After the Jubilee Extension opened in 1999, Canary Wharf began to actively promote Crossrail, as a new station on Crossrail's Elizabeth line will serve the area. It's due to be open in December 2018.
London City Airport is linked to both Canary Wharf and the City of London via the Docklands Light Railway, and an interchange to the London Underground. London City Airport DLR station is situated immediately adjacent to the terminal building, with enclosed access to and from the elevated platforms.
Heron Quays Station, one of the first stations to be built in the Canary Wharf estate, was first opened in 1987. The station has two platforms in use, is in Travelcard Zone 2, and is on the Lewisham branch of the Docklands Light Railway, between Canary Wharf and South Quay.

???? Exploring Canary Wharf in London
A short film on Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs in London. Once part of the largest docks in the world, Canary Wharf has been transformed in the last 40 years into a bustling financial district. At its heart in the old West India Docks is the towering One Canada Square building, the United Kingdom's second tallest building. Nestled around that, many of Europe's tallest buildings house much of the UK's financial sector. At lunch time the thousands of office workers all seek their spot, some in the bars and restaurants along the quays, others in the park areas and others still in the Crossrail Place Roof Garden. Contained in the roof of the new Crossrail station, this 300 meter long enclosed garden is home to an array of plants and flowers. A green oasis in a sea of metal and glass.
Canary Wharf, London, UK - Unravel Travel TV
Canary Wharf is one of Britain's major financial districts in the heart of East London. It was once home to the West India docks but as these went into decline and redevelopment began in the 1980's, Canary Wharf was born.
The London skyline changed forever, a new shining ultra modern part of the city was created including some of the tallest buildings ever seen in Britain. One of the first buildings completed in 1991 was Number One Canada Square. This became a powerful symbol of the regeneration program and one of the most recognised buildings in London. Many more buildings have now been built and Canary Wharf has grown into an integral part of London's modern skyline. It is as instantly recognisable as other landmarks such as the London Eye and Houses of Parliament.

Canary Wharf is a surprisingly peaceful place. It doesn't really have any major roads and the DLR system is fairly quiet. It has its own international airport, London City Airport serving over 30 destinations.
Canary Wharf is a major East London business district within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It's located on the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs and is one of the two main financial centres in the United Kingdom along with the City of London.
From 1802 to 1939, the area was one of the busiest docks in the world. After the 1960s, the port industry began to decline and all the docks closed by 1980. Today, about 1,000 ships still pass through the docks each month. The first new buildings of the Docklands regeneration were completed in 1991, starting with the most prominent symbol in this new world, number One Canada Square.
Stothert & Pitt were a British engineering company from Bath. They made all these Dock cranes you see around the quays which were used for heavy loading and unloading of ships during import and export operations. Most were destroyed in the war however.
Canary Wharf has three shopping malls: Canada Place, Cabot Place and Jubilee Place. The type of shops and bars you'll find there mostly reflect the salary of the workers in the district. The area is also home to the largest Waitrose in the country.
The Canary Wharf estate contains most of the tallest buildings in the country and One Canada Square was the tallest building in the UK until it was overtaken by The Shard in 2012. Over 100,000 people work in Canary Wharf inside corporate establishments such as Morgan Stanley, Barclays, Citigroup, HSBC, J.P.Morgan, KPMG and others. The average salary is also £100,000.
The Wharf adopts the 'Canary' part of its name for two reasons. Historically, it was heavily involved in a fruit trade with the Canary Islands which itself was named by the Spanish after they found lots of large canine's on the islands. Since the quay also sits on the Isle of Dogs, the name 'Canary' became a no-brainer for both the quay and the old fruit warehouse, now demolished.
Canary Wharf Tube station was designed by Norman Foster and opened in 1999 after 10 years work. It looks like a modern hobbit hole from the outside, but is big enough for One Canada Square to lie down inside of it.

CANARY WHARF, LONDON, SKYSCRAPERS IN LONDON, FINANCIAL DISTRICT OF LONDON, WALKING AROUND LONDON
CANARY WHARF, LONDON, WALKING AROUND CANARY WHARF LONDON, Canary Wharf is a busy financial area filled with skyscrapers like the glittering One Canada Square. Canada Square Park hosts summer concerts and a winter ice-skating rink, while the Museum of London Docklands draws families with model ships and hands-on displays. Casual cafes bustle during the day and, come evening, post-work crowds gather in stylish wine bars and pubs. Ferries called Thames Clippers ply the river. Canary Wharf is a commercial estate on the Isle of Dogs in London, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is one of the main financial centres of the United Kingdom, along with the City of London, and contains many of Europe's tallest buildings, including the second-tallest in the UK, One Canada Square.[1][2]
Canary Wharf is 97 acres (39 hectares) and contains around 16,000,000 square feet (1,500,000 m2) of office and retail space. It comprises many open areas, including Canada Square, Cabot Square and Westferry Circus. Together with Heron Quays, West India Quay and Wood Wharf, it forms the Canary Wharf Estate. West India Dock Company
From 1802 to the late 1980s, the Canary Wharf Estate was a part of Millwall, Limehouse and Poplar and was one of the busiest docks in the world. After the 1960s, the port industry began to decline, leading to all the docks being closed by 1980.[3][4] West India Docks was primarily developed by Robert Milligan (c. 1746–1809) who set up the West India Dock Company.
Port of London Authority
West India Dock was by this time owned by the Port of London Authority in 1909. Canary Wharf itself takes its name from No. 32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock. This was built in 1936 for Fruit Lines Ltd, a subsidiary of Fred Olsen Lines for the Mediterranean and Canary Islands fruit trade. The Canary islands were so named after the large dogs found there by the Spanish (Gran Canaria from Canine) and as it is located on the Isle of Dogs, the quay and warehouse were given the name Canary Wharf.[5]
London Docklands Development Corporation
After the docks closed in 1980, the British Government adopted policies to stimulate redevelopment of the area, including the creation of the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) in 1981 and the granting of Urban Enterprise Zone status to the Isle of Dogs in 1982.[4]
The Canary Wharf of today began when Michael von Clemm, former chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB), came up with the idea to convert Canary Wharf into a back office. Further discussions with G Ware Travelstead led to proposals for a new business district and included the LDDC developing a cheap light metro scheme, called the Docklands Light Railway to make use a large amount of redundant railway infrastructure and to improve access.
The project was sold to the Canadian company Olympia & York[6] and construction began in 1988, master-planned by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with Yorke Rosenberg Mardall as their UK advisors, and subsequently by Koetter Kim. The first buildings were completed in 1991, including 1 Canada Square, which became the UK's tallest building at the time and a symbol of the regeneration of Docklands. By the time it opened, the London commercial property market had collapsed, and Olympia and York Canary Wharf Limited filed for bankruptcy in May 1992.
Initially, the City of London saw Canary Wharf as an existential threat. It modified its planning laws to expand the provision of new offices in the City of London, for example, creating offices above railway stations (Blackfriars) and roads (Alban Gate). The resulting oversupply of office space contributed to the failure of the Canary Wharf project.
Canary Wharf Group
In Oct. 1995, an international consortium that included investors such as Alwaleed, bought control for $1.2 billion. Paul Reichmann was named chairman, and Canary Wharf went public in 1999.[7] The new company was called Canary Wharf Limited, and later became Canary Wharf Group.
In 1997, some residents living on the Isle of Dogs launched a lawsuit against Canary Wharf Ltd for private nuisance because the tower interfered with TV signals. The residents lost the case.[8]
Recovery in the property market generally, coupled with continuing demand for large floorplate Grade A office space, slowly improved the level of interest. A critical event in the recovery was the much-delayed start of work on the Jubilee Line Extension, which the government wanted ready for the Millennium celebrations.
In March 2004, Canary Wharf Group plc. was taken over by a consortium of investors, backed by its largest shareholder Glick Family Investments[9] and led by Morgan Stanley using a vehicle named Songbird Estates
