Day Hike at Little Manatee River State Park, Wimauma, Florida.
The Little Manatee River begins in a swampy area near Fort Lonesome and flows almost 40 miles before emptying into Tampa Bay. The river has been designated an Outstanding Florida Water and is part of the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the rare ecosystems found within the park, including sand pine and oak scrub and oxbow wetlands, which can be explored by hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, or camping at Little Manatee River State Park. The Little Manatee River flows for 4.5 miles, through eleven unique natural communities within the park. The park boasts one of the premier hiking trails of Southwest Florida, a 6.5 mile stacked loop located in the wilderness area in north half of the park. The Oxbow Nature Trail, accessible from the main picnic area in the south half of the park, makes a one mile loop along scrub ridges that skirt the main river and an oxbow wetland. In addition, over 15 miles of equestrian and multi-use trails meander through the southern half of the park. Come picnic in one of the riverside pavilions or stay for the night in the full facility campground. Little Manatee River State Park is one of the best kept secrets of Hillsborough County, and has a little something for everyone.
My First Little Manatee River Adventure
This was my first time running the Little Manatee River. The water was a little shallow at first but about halfway the river became wider and deeper. It was a quiet day. Usually you pass a lot of other folks in kayaks and canoes but I seemed to have the river all to myself; well maybe except for the dog on the side near the beginning. The put in point was under the highway ridge neat the Canoe Outpost. The take out point was up a small inlet that ends at the Manatee State Park primitive camping area. The run takes about 2 and one-half hours paddling easily with the current.
The tannin stained, tea colored Little Manatee River begins in the central woodlands of Florida. A little brook at first, small feeder tributaries and springs feed the river and it is soon deep ebough for kayakas and canoes. A few miles further down stream the ocean tide effects the depth of the water and the river becomes deep enough for lare boats - I even passed a 32-foot yach moored to the river bank. Most of the way the river meanders through old forests of hardwoods, palmettos and strangely enough, some citrus trees. Most of Florida's wildlife cane be found here at one time or another.

Campground Review of Little Manatee River State Park Florida
This is just a quick campground review of Little Manatee River State Park in Florida. Horribly we realized quickly while trying to put this video together that we used the wrong video camera. The Canon T5 is great for standalone pictures and tripod video, but just sucks as an action camera. Going forward we’ll be sticking to the GoPro for action video footage, and the Canon T5 for still campsite shots. Video lesson learned, and what was I thinking. - N
