About 2,000 years ago, in pre-Columbian times, the people of Nazca developed a system of underground aqueducts to irrigate the dry parts of the valley, which lack surface water. The Nazca culture men also fought prolonged droughts, which are existing in the Nazca Valley. This irrigation system is unique in Peru and probably worldwide. Although the years have passed and there have been frequent earthquakes in this area, in the Nazca region still exist over 30 underground channels, which are still used today by farmers in the valley. These predominantly grow cotton, corn, beans, butter beans and potatoes, and a variety of fruits. At the designated time our driver and guide will pick us up at the hotel. Then take us to the highest point of the Nazca valley in the direction Cantayoc Zone. We will visit the Inca ruins of Cajamarca, a tomb, we can say it is a place to rest. It was built long ago, during the time that the Incas expanded their empire to the shores of Peru. Later we will visit the archaeological site, known as Aguajas, where one can see a huge trapeze from the top of a small hill. Let's get some information about the Nazca Lines and the opportunity to have a close look of the famous building, which was built over a thousand years ago. Finally visit Cantalloc aqueducts, where we witness the imagination of the ancient inhabitants, that are built underground aqueducts for service. These are still used today. We will know more about the ancient hydraulic engineering, irrigation system and the Nazca Culture. Nearby, you can also enjoy a natural landscape with cotton plantations, corn, potatoes, etc (to see the fruits depend on the season). Nazca is an archaeological culture of ancient Peru that emerged in the province of Nazca (Ica) around the first century and into decline in the sixth century. It was located on the banks of the Rio Grande between 300 BC 600 A.D. It had an area of influence that extended to Pisco by the north to Arequipa in the south and east to Ayacucho. Until the sixth century. C., increased contacts with the Andes, reaching even to the highlands of Ayacucho. This contact was especially important in the formation of the Huari culture. An impressive aspect is its polychrome pottery Nazca, with figures of men, animals, plants, etc.. In many of these ceramics are represented mutilated men. The textile art flourished as much as in the time of the Paracas. They had a style of metalworking, although of lesser quality at the time of Chavin. The most impressive of this civilization are the strokes made in the Pampas of Nazca and other sites on the south coast of Peru. The strokes known as the Nazca Lines are located in a geographical area with low precipitation, demonstrating knowledge of geography and meteorology. Twenty miles from the city of Nazca is Chauchilla Cemetery. An outdoor necropolis where despite looting can still see mummies in good condition and pottery shards. Nasquense economy was based on intensive agriculture. The Nazca managed to solve the problem of uncultivated land on the coast by using a network of aqueducts, which is a feat of its engineering hydraulics.

Cantalloc Aqueducts (air view) - Nazca

It is an aqueduct built by the Nasca culture which still works today. Flagstones and acacia trunks were used to build it and they have resisted the march of time.

Los acueductos de Cantalloc, se encuentran a 4 kilometros de la ciudad de Nazca (aproximadamente unos 15 minutos).
DESCRIPCIÓN
Está formado por un conjunto de acueductos que permitían el transporte del líquido elemento hasta este valle árido. Este patrimonio pertenecieron a la cultura Nasca (siglo I-VI d.C.). Este conjunto de canales muestra el ingenio y gran desarrollo hidráulico de esta antigua cultura. Para su construcción se utilizaron piedras y troncos de madera que han resistido el paso de los siglos.
Se denomina puquios a los impresionantes acueductos subterráneos y -más específicamente- a los pozos de ventilación. La forma de espiral es para la oxigenación, impiden la erosión, son antisísmicas, y es por donde se puede ingresar para su limpieza. Las construcciones son hechas a base de rocas de río piedra canto rodado de origen volcánico. La prueba con el c-14 dio como resultado una antigüedad de 1600 años. Tienen tres tramos: el subterráneo que capta el agua de las vetas acuíferas; el tramo a tajo abierto, que la capta por filtración; y el que la conduce en grandes hondonadas, cochas, de donde se distribuye por acequias a las tierras de cultivo, a las chacras. Los puquios más famosos son los de Cantalloc, Agua Santa, Majoro, Majorito, Pangaraví y Soisonguito.
Estos puquios fueron desarrollados para irrigar las partes secas del valle, y poder así combatir las prolongadas sequías que azotaban Nasca. Este sistema de irrigación es único en Perú y tal vez en el mundo. A pesar del transcurso de los años y los frecuentes movimientos telúricos en la zona, aún existen unos 32 canales subterráneos, y son usados actualmente por los campesinos del valle, quienes siembran principalmente en el valle algodón, maíz, frijoles, pallares y papas, como gran variedad de frutas. La creencia local afirma que la fuente de agua de los puquios es un lago subterráneo ubicado dentro de cerro blanco, la duna más alta de Suramérica 2080 msnm. Cada año hacen ofrendas en su cima para asegurar un buen nivel de agua en los puquios.
Geoglifos de Cantalloc: Conocido como el complejo textil por su representación coreográfica con instrumentos como la aguja, el huso y el telar existiendo varios espirales que podrían ser ovillos de hilo, todo este conjunto representa la forma como se confeccionaban los tejidos. Está ubicado a 4,5 al Este en Nasca, camino a Puquio.
