What is the 798 Art District in Beijing, China?
The 798 Art District in Beijing is one of the main contemporary art zones in China. Today, the area is overrun with tourist and commercial art, but it is still a great place to visit if you are into art. There are many galleries and shops to buy prints and interesting modern art. We really enjoyed our time exploring this contemporary art scene and getting a feel for Chinese modern art.
More on the 798 Art District:
798 Art Zone, or Dashanzi Art District, comprise a complex of 50-year-old decommissioned military factory buildings boasting a unique architectural style, located in Dashanzi, Chaoyang District of Beijing, that houses a thriving artistic community.
The area is often called the 798 Art District or Factory 798 although technically, Factory #798 is only one of several structures inside a complex formerly known as 718 Joint Factory.
The buildings are within alleys number 2 and 4 on Jiǔxiānqiáo Lù (酒仙桥路), south of the Dàshānziqiáo flyover (大山子桥). In recent years, it has been the main venue for the annual Beijing Queer Film Festival and Beijing Design Week.

798 Art Zone & Caochangdi | Black Buddha (Beijing)
You can look, but don’t touch
Beijing is certainly ripe with opportunities to witness the artistry and craftsmanship of China’s great dynasties, but if you are looking for the excitement of China’s modern art movement, we have a couple of recommendations off the beaten path.
798 Art Zone (or Dashanzi Art District) is a sprawling 230,000 sq. meter complex filled with galleries, art exhibition spaces, artists’ studios, design firms and retail (fashion, restaurants, etc.). A decommissioned military factory from the 1950s, 798 Art Zone features a Bauhaus-influenced design born from a collaboration between China and East Germany. Who would have known that the “form follows function” aesthetic would provide the perfect backdrop to showcase China’s contemporary art scene. The outposts of established international galleries like TOKYO GALLERY (BTAP), PACE and GALLERIA CONTINUA attract the cognoscenti, but if you are looking for some attainable cool, the retail store of the ULLENS CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART (UCCA) is worth a visit.
Another nearby artistic hotbed is Caochangdi – a ten minute cab ride from 798. Translated as “grasslands” in Mandarin, Caochangdi is a true artists community, home to a diverse group of residents, including migrant workers, farmers, students and artists, most notably, Ai Weiwei. Unlike the more uptown, commercialized feel of 798, Caochangdi displays more of a raw emotion and connection to humanity that certainly inspires creativity amongst its residents. THREE SHADOWS PHOTOGRAPHY ART CENTRE and GALERIE URS MEILE are among Caochangdi’s notable attractions.
Whether you are looking for inspiration, a space for quiet contemplation or just to get out and see something new, there is something here for you.

Beijing's Prominent Art Gallery Provides a Unique Portal into Chinese Art Culture
A portal to contemporary Chinese art like no other.
Red Gate Gallery stands alone as the oldest and most respected contemporary art gallery in China. Founded by Brian Wallace in 1991, this breathtaking exhibition space is Beijing's first private contemporary art gallery. Located in Dongbianmen, Red Gate Gallery is set in the historic 600 year old Ming Dynasty watchtower - the only structure to survive the destruction of the city wall. Collections featured in the gallery present articles of China's contemporary artistic expression in conjunction with traditional influence. Through his connections to the Chinese Art Community, Mr. Wallace established the premier artist residency program in 2001 which exhibits the best of Chinese contemporary art while facilitating cultural exchange and dialogue between China and the rest of the world.

Art Openings Beijing March 2013: Platform China and C-Space
| Platform China in Beijing presents Jungle II -- A Thriving Morphology, a one-year long project. It refers to a space-time pattern in the shape of a diffusing, proliferating and growing process instead of a more conventional exhibition mode. The idea is to introduce a context for the audience to emulate, discuss and interact with art. The artists participating in the project are: Alex Gibbs, Alexander Tinei, Bi Jianye, Fu Jingyan, Geng Yi, Han Jiaquan, Huang Liang, Jia Aili, Lou Shenyi, Ma Ke, Nandan Ghiya, Qi Wenzhang, Qin Qi, Qiu Ruixiang, Song Yuanyuan, Wang Yin, Wang Xingwei, Xiao Bo, Xiao Jiang, Zhang Enli, Zhang Hao, Zhang Yexing, Zhao Gang, Zhao Zhao, Zhou Yilun, Jin Shan, Wang Ke, Tang Dayao, Liu Weijian and Zhang Ran.
C-Space exhibits The Upstairs Room, paintings produced over the past year when Robbin Heyker was a resident artist at C-Space. The references in his work process are related to the village of Caochangdi, found materials and the juxtaposition of elements. Metaphorically they reflect our instinctual need to bring together the disparate perceptions of our existence to forge provisional answers and create manageable systems. C-Space also shows In Case, a group of installations by Yida He. The artist experiments with the balance between softness and rigidity of the form, the insertion of material into space and its relation to space in material, form and meaning. They are seemingly fragile ephemeral structures, arranged against their interactions with the space.

798 Art Zone: A Closer Look - TripAdvisor Beijing App Review
Since I have been to Beijing a few times I wanted somewhere off the beaten path that would give me a chance to take a look at a subculture living in broad daylight. 798 Art Zone is outside the 4th ring so the chances of you happening on this district are pretty remote.
Before I get into my experiences checking out contemporary art, architecture and culture in this historically interesting location let me go over the best apps for walking tours in Beijing.
TripAdvisor is our tried and true favorite, it's our go to when we land in any city and it's the app we feature in the video above. There is a city guide the ability to have offline maps with compass that will help you navigate offline is killer. You can also download walking tours as well as restaurant reviews. Though you'll learn in the video that 798 is so far out there weren't any reviews!!
