Episode 26: Paternoster and Cape Columbine Nature Reserve are areas that are best explored without an agenda or timetable. The quaintness of Paternoster's white-washed fisherman cottages and long sandy beach, as well as the wealth of great restaurants in town lend themselves to slow lazy days that blend into quiet evenings, while the long stretch of coastline in the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve mean that there are lots of hidden places to discover if you give yourself the time.

Paternoster, West Coast, South Africa
Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast of South Africa. It is situated 15 km north-west of Vredenburg and 145 km north of Cape Town, at Cape Columbine between Saldanha Bay and St Helena Bay. The town covers an area of 194.8 hectares and has approximately 1883 inhabitants.
The origin of the name remains unknown. Many people believe that the name, which means ‘Our Father’ in Latin, refers to prayers said by Catholic Portuguese seamen when they became shipwrecked. It appears as St. Martins Paternoster on an old map of Pieter Mortier. Other people believe it refers to the beads that the Khoi tribe wore that were called Paternosters.

The place in S.A. where I've gone camping with my family almost every year of my life so far. It's on the west coast, forming part of the Cape Columbine Reserve.
What do you do here you might ask: diving, hiking, spearfishing, fishing and a fair amount of drinking and lazing in the sun.
It's certainly one of my favorite places in the world!
