Fort Story Military Reservation is a facility of the U.S. Army located in the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia at Cape Henry.
The base includes sandy trails, cypress swamps, grassy dunes and soft and hard sand beaches.
The Cape Henry Lighthouse has long been important for the large amount of ocean-going shipping traffic for the harbors, its rivers, and shipping headed to ports on the Chesapeake Bay.
It was the first lighthouse authorized by the U.S. government, dating from 1792. It was also the first federal construction project under the Constitution.
The lighthouses are located within the boundaries of Fort Story. The Cape Henry Memorial is adjacent to the lighthouses.
The Cape Henry Lighthouses were backdrops for a scene in the 2001 movie Hearts in Atlantis, based on the 1999 Stephen King novel.
To visit the lighthouse, you must pass through the security gates of Fort Story. Please have identification including a picture with you for all visitors aged 16 years or older.
The security personnel have the right to examine your car before issuing a pass to enter the base. The guards are courteous and efficient, but please allow a few extra minutes for entry into the site.
The architectural integrity of the tower is representative of one of John McComb's best and most important constructions.
During a routine inspection in 1872 questions arose concerning the stability and safety of the lighthouse. An appropriation of $75,000 on 10 June 1878 dedicated monies to erect a new lighthouse 350 feet southeast of the old.
First Landing State Park is located on Cape Henry. This 2,888 acre park offers a wide range of activities for visitors.

???????? King Neptune in Virginia Beach
My mom and I decided to go check out what Virginia Beach had to offer. We were unable to go in the water, unfortunately, due to some bacterial infection or something.
So, we decided to go walk to the great Neptune statue on the boardwalk.
Afterwards, we ventured over to the Cape Henry lighthouses. I didn't want to pay to enter because I've seen many lighthouses and I'd rather save my money to travel more. But I wanted to atleast take a picture of it. So I walked around the entire lighthouse exterior, which was surrounded by trees and bushes, looking for the perfect angle. Well, there was no perfect angle. In fact, even to this day, I have no idea what the bottom of the old Cape Henry lighthouse looks like.

Virginia Beach, a coastal city in southeastern Virginia, lies where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. A 3-mile boardwalk stretches along its beach-lined oceanfront. The bayside First Landing State Park marks the 1607 arrival of the Jamestown colonists from England. The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center exhibits ocean life including sharks, rays and sea turtles in globally themed habitats.
Virginia Beach offers the classic beach vacation, and maintains a long-standing reputation as a family-friendly oceanfront resort. Visitors are greeted by a 300-foot wide beach lined by Virginia Beach’s three-mile concrete oceanfront Boardwalk. The resort offers a mild climate year-round. Itineraries include lazy days on the beach, the state parks and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge beckon, hiking, kayaking, and biking adventures. Fishing, golfing, whale watching, dolphin watching, historic landmarks, and exciting attractions and popular events are part of the Beach experience.
With 35 miles of sandy beaches, a 3-mile concrete oceanfront boardwalk and nearby outdoor activities, it's no surprise that Virginia Beach is a prime tourist destination. The city has worked hard to shed its reputation as a rowdy 'Redneck Riviera,' and hey, the beach is wider and cleaner now and there are fewer louts. Beach aside, you'll find some lovely parks and nature sites beyond the crowded high-rises lining the shore. Expect thick crowds, heavy traffic and high prices if visiting in the summer.

Oldest Lighthouse in America!! Beautiful ocean view! Cape Henry Lighthouse
This was a cool experience getting to climb America's oldest lighthouse built in 1792. This was one of the first federal construction projects under the United States Constitution.
The stairs were originally wood, but then replaced by cast iron. The cast iron needed support due to the weight, so bricks were laid inside the lighthouse to help support the weight.
The second lighthouse which is still in use today and manned by the United States Coastguard, is also named Cape Henry Lighthouse.
Great day spent at the lighthouse!
