Cape Spear Lighthouses, near St. John's, NL, Canada, via DJI Phantom 3 drone
Filmed over three days, including just after sunrise and just before sunset, experience the famous, breathtaking, beautiful lighthouses and landscape at Cape Spear.
Located along the rocky eastern coastline of Newfoundland & Labrador's Avalon Peninsula, these lighthouses are on North America's easternmost plot of land. The area is immaculate and evident of great pride.

Cape Spear, St Johns, Newfoundland - Canada HD Travel Channel
Cape Spear, the most easterly point of the North American continent, is only 3 km southeast of St. John, the capital of Newfoundland. The landmark is the lighthouse built in 1835. It is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and has been restored to its original appearance of 1839, the common lighthouse design on Canada's east coast, a stone tower in the middle surrounded by a frame-house. Today it houses a museum.
The second lighthouse was built in 1955 and is still in operation today. From here you have the best views over the harbor entrance of St. John's and Signal Hill.
The bunkers and guns are a relic from World War II. However not a single shot was fired from here. The service in the battery, in this cold and often misty landscape must have been very monotonous. Today, the bunker offers a sheltered look at a wonderful landscape.
Depending on season whales, seabirds or icebergs can be watched here.
The Cape Spear National Historic Park was open in 1983 by Their Royal Highnesses Prince and Princess of Wales.

SIGNAL HILL NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE - CANADA SERIES - THINGS TO DO IN NEWFOUNDLAND (EP 190)
Last summer was one of the best summers in St. John's Newfoundland. I was very fortunate to find some really lovely friends who took me around and helped me explore the place. This quaint little city always has something to offer. Signal Hill is very sought to place for many locals and tourists because of its location and history. The wild blueberries picking is cherry on the icing for those who like a chic experience in this rugged rocky city.

Cape Spear is the national heritage site of canada
Cape Spear’s location near the convoy routes of the Second World War made it a strategic point in the Battle of the Atlantic. To provide protection for convoys from German submarines a battery and garrison was stationed at Cape Spear featuring bunkers, underground passages, and two 10-inch guns. Today this outpost is no longer used by any military and the remains of the bunker stand as a reminder of the impact of the war.

Castle Hill National Historic Site, Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador (by Peter Bull)
Last summer, after leaving Cape St. Mary's, we headed to Placentia to check out Castle Hill National Historic Site. The hill has the remnants of English and French fortifications from the 17th and 18th centuries. Many a battle was waged over this strategic piece of high ground. We took in the visitor center first and then headed to the castle. The day was perfect for taking in the easy hiking trails around the hill. We used the headsets available at the visitor's center to learn more about the history as we walked around. Castle Hill is definitely worth the stop if you are in the Placentia Bay area.

Out here, we rise a half an hour earlier than the rest of the continent. It is the place of first light. And home to the world's largest, and arguably most effective, alarm clock.
