Table Mountain National Park – Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point (South Africa)
The Table Mountain National Park is an international landmark in South Africa and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It includes the mountain ranges of Table Mountain, from the north via the Signal Hill ranging in the south
the peninsula. For two wonderful points I want to remember you today:
Cape of Good Hope- the Cape of Good Hope, this is the most southwesterly point of Africa
Cape Point, the cliffs at the southern end of the Cape Peninsula. These two points are often confused.
However, they are apart about 2 Km. We have here all uniquely beautiful views. The flora and fauna is very diverse, which is not very rugged mountains and cliffs at first glance suggest. Hikers and nature lovers will be delighted.

Cape Point Nature Reserve - Cape Town, South Africa
Home to buck, zebra, ostrich, baboons, 250 bird species and indigenous flora and fauna, the area offers beautiful lookouts, beaches, hikes and mountain biking trails. Make sure to stop by the Cape of Good Hope – the most southwestern tip of Africa – and the infamous lighthouse at Cape Point. Instead of taking the Flying Dutchman Funicular, walk up to the lighthouse and check out the lookout points along the way. The views just keep getting better. If you have the time take a walk down to Diaz beach (it’s a steep walk, but well worth it). You might spot some skimboarders or bodyboarders braving the open ocean swell. Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly as Cape Town weather can change unexpectedly so come prepared.

Cape Point,South Africa
Cape Point is a promontory at the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula, which is a mountainous and scenic landform that runs north-south for about thirty kilometres at the extreme southwestern tip of the African continent in the Republic of South Africa. Table Mountain and the city of Cape Town are close to the northern extremity of the same peninsula. about 2.3 kilometres (1.4 mi) east and a little north of the Cape of Good Hope on the southwest corner. Although these two rocky and beautiful capes are very well known, neither cape is actually the southernmost point in Africa; that is Cape Agulhas, approximately 150 kilometres (90 mi) to the east-southeast.
The Cape of Good Hope
The Cape of Good Hope is a rocky headland on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula, South Africa.
There is a misconception that the Cape of Good Hope is the southern tip of Africa, because it was once believed to be the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. In fact, the southernmost point is Cape Agulhas, about 150 kilometres (90 mi) to the east-southeast. The currents of the two oceans meet at the point where the warm-water Agulhas current meets the cold water Benguela current and turns back on itself—a point that fluctuates between Cape Agulhas and Cape Point.
Table Mountain
Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa, and is featured in the Flag of Cape Town and other local government insignia. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park.
The main feature of Table Mountain is the level plateau approximately 3 kilometres (2 mi) from side to side, edged by impressive cliffs. The plateau, flanked by Devil's Peak to the east and by Lion's Head to the west, forms a dramatic backdrop to Cape Town. This broad sweep of mountainous heights, together with Signal Hill, forms the natural amphitheatre of the City Bowl and Table Bay harbour. The highest point on Table Mountain is towards the eastern end of the plateau and is marked by Maclear's Beacon, a stone cairn built in 1865 by Sir Thomas Maclear for trigonometrical survey. It is 1,086 metres (3,563 ft) above sea level, about 19 metres (62 ft) higher than the cable station at the western end of the plateau.
The cliffs of the main plateau are split by Platteklip Gorge (Flat Stone Gorge), which provides an easy and direct ascent to the summit and was the route taken by António de Saldanha on the first recorded ascent of the mountain in 1503.
The flat top of the mountain is often covered by orographic clouds, formed when a south-easterly wind is directed up the mountain's slopes into colder air, where the moisture condenses to form the so-called table cloth of cloud. Legend attributes this phenomenon to a smoking contest between the Devil and a local pirate called Van Hunks. When the table cloth is seen, it symbolizes the contest.
Table Mountain is at the northern end of a sandstone mountain range that forms the spine of the Cape Peninsula. To the south of the main plateau is a lower part of the range called the Back Table. On the Atlantic coast of the peninsula, the range is known as the Twelve Apostles. The range continues southwards to Cape Point.

The Cape Floral Kingdom is located at the southern tip of Africa.
Botanists divide the world into six floral kingdoms based on the vegetables species that grow in each one. Five of the six kingdoms occupy entire continents and their adjacent islands. The vegetation of Eurasia and North America, for example, make up a single kingdom which covers almost the entire northern hemisphere; another covers Australia; a third covers the land of south-eastern Asia and the next two are found in South America and the greatest part of Africa.
The Cape Floral Kingdom, also called the Regional Endemisms Centre or Fynbos, is the smallest one of all, occupying only 0.04% of the planet’s land surface and yet it contains a greater number of endemisms than the rest of the gigantic floral kingdoms of the world. This floral kingdom borders the cold waters of the Atlantic to the west and the milder waters of the Indian Ocean to the east. The union of the two oceans and the advanced southern latitude result in a mild climate with an average temperature of almost 17 degrees Centigrade. The entire area is protected by a network of more than 20 preserves and national parks which are responsible for protecting a natural environment which is as much rich and endemic as it is unknown to most people.
The western coast of South Africa is bathed by currents from the Benguela which originates in the Antarctic Ocean. When it hits the Sub-Antarctic waters along its northerly course, it submerges beneath them until it has almost reached the continental mass of Africa where it is pushed upward, carrying with it a vast amount of nutrients.
The Cape of Good Hope marks the transition point for ships between the southern Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
Although not the most southerly point on the continent, as it is often mistakenly considered, the Cape is a historic place. The first European to go around it by ship was the Portuguese Baltolomeu Días in 1487, marking the opening of the maritime route to the Orient. The poor weather conditions and the terrible danger of the ocean and its shallows for navigation led Días to baptise it the Cape of Storms, but King John II of Portugal, seeing the commercial importance of the new route which opened the way to the Indies, subsequently renamed it the Cape of Good Hope.
While the Cape in particular and the South African Coast in general are dangerous for navigation, for wildlife they are an authentic paradise.
The wealth of the union between the two oceans and the contribution of nutrients from the Benguela current produce an extraordinary biodiversity.
Here live sea bears, jackass penguins, sea birds, otters, the mountain zebra, baboons and chakmas or black papions and also endangered species such as the black-eyed parrot.
Despite the variety and importance of the different animal species which populate the entire region, in the Regional Endemisms Centre or Fynbos, plants are the real stars. While in the northern hemisphere, glaciations destroyed many vegetable species up to only 10,000 years ago, there have been no glaciations in this region in the last 115 million years. This climatic stability, together with the rough topology, have made possible the uninterrupted development and the exception richness of the vegetable life at Fynbos.
On 5 June 1998, World Environment Day, the idea proposed in 1929 by the South African Wildlife Society became a reality. President Nelson Mandela announced that the Cape peninsula would be converted into a national park. 30,000 hectares sheltering more than 2,285 plant species, 105 of which are endemic, and more animal endemisms than anywhere else, make this the most biologically diverse preserve in the world.
President Mandela called the new park South Africa’s gift to the Earth, and noted that while in prison on nearby Robben Island, the view of Table Mountain included in the Cape area, was a beacon of hope for him.
The national park on the Cape peninsula now protects the heart of the smallest and richest floral kingdom on the planet. For hundreds of unique species, endemic to this remote corner of the world, it has become, as it was for President Mandela, a beacon of hope guaranteeing survival for future generations.

South Africa travel vlog ft Cape Town, Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope | Departures
In October 2017 I visited South Africa for the first time, spoiler alert, it's awesome.
During our time in Cape Town, we visited Table Mountain for some abseiling. We also traveled to the Cape of Good Hope and the most southwestern point of South Africa, the peninsula which divides the Atlantic and Indian ocean. Along the way, dropping in to see the penguins at Boulders Beach.
There was a trip to the city of Cape Town stadium, which hosted games during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. As well as some traditional South African music and dancing and of course lots of the Cape Town food.
There was an up close and personal experience with elephants, zebras, giraffes and more at the Aquila Safari reserve and also, some monkeys climb on us.
Thanks for watching my South African travel vlog. Hope to see you again soon. Don't forget to check out my previous video, including my departures travel vlog series:

Cape Peninsula
The scenic Cape Peninsula, part of Cape Town's Table Mountain National Park. It begins southwest of Table Mountain und stretches all the way to the Cape of Good Hope, over a distance of 40 kilometres. The mountains are covered with dense Fynbos vegetation. Many bays and coves with beautiful beaches, in the west along the Atlantic and in the East at the Indian Ocean.
The journey starts in the pittoresc fishing village of Hout Bay with the busy harbour and lively promenade. Substantial amounts of fish are unloaded here every day. Mostly it is snoek or hake, mainly for export to Spain. Behind the fishing boats: the arts and crafts market with items from all over Africa, including diamonds. Boat rides on the bay are quite popular. As a farewell - and a welcome on return - the colourfully dressed street musicians from the Hangklip quarter play and sing their tunes.
Proceeding to the Cape - on the Chapman's Peak Drive - along the Atlantic coast. To the left of the road - wonderful hiking trails into the Table Mountain National Park. The proteas are part of the unique fynbos vegetation. At Chapman's Point the view of Hout Bay is overwhelming. Here starts the most dramatic part of the stretch. Steep rockwalls, narrow curves and gallery tunnels, and to the right the endless blue Atlantic ocean. Behind the last bend a wide view opens. In front lies the wild sandy beach of Noordhoek. One of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa.
Close to the Cape: ostriches at the sea. The Cape of Good Hope is often crowded. Everybody wants to be on the photo. A bit further to the south-east lies the second tip: Cape Point. The funicular starts at the restaurant and drives uphill to the old lighthouse. It's more invigorating though to walk up the mountain. Once arrived one is rewarded with magic panoramic views. To the east the Indian Ocean - to the west the Atlantic - and to the south the rugged tip of the African continent.
Back along the Indian Ocean. To Simon's Town with its pretty Victorian houses and the harbour. A boardwalk leads along the beach to the town's greatest attraction - the penguin colony at Foxy Beach and Boulders Beach. Once threatened by extinction, 3000 breeding pairs of African Penguins are living here nowadays. The beach is protected by huge round granite boulders. Seamed by Milkwood thicket, providing the penguins with an ideal breeding habitat. Swimming is allowed at Boulders Beach. Sometimes people and penguins can be seen together in the clear shallow water.
