British History & Culture - Leisure time in the 18th & 19th centuries
A short listening exercise for the TEFL classroom about leisure time in the 18th & 19th centuries.
Bath
In the 18th century leisure was something only enjoyed by the wealthy. Those who were __________ enough would travel for twenty-four hours by horse-drawn coach to leave the noise and dirt of London and spend a few months in places like Bath. With its grand balls and social functions Bath soon became the most ___________ place in England; its visitors included Queen Anne herself, Lord Nelson and the novelist Jane Austen (below right), who set two of her books in and around the city. The impressive architecture from this period was the work of the father and son John Wood the Elder and John Wood the Younger.
John Wood the Elder’s masterpiece is the Circus, a _____________ which was inspired by the Coliseum in Rome, and his son added the magnificent Royal Crescent nearby. Although it contains thirty separate houses it was designed to look like a grand palace. Pultney Bridge (above), designed by Robert Adams and built in 1770, is also inspired by an _____________ design, the Ponte Vecchio in Florence.
As middle class people began coming to Bath in large numbers in the late 18th century the city lost its exclusive elegance. Around the same time sea bathing became popular, even with King George III. As a result the Royal family began visiting Brighton and other places on the south _______, and wherever the King went the aristocracy followed. The popularity of Bath declined as England’s seaside resorts became the fashionable places to spend time ___________ the capital.
Leisure for the masses
The rapid growth of the railway system after 1830 played an important part in the development of seaside resorts, because it meant that ____________ people could now travel around the country ____________ and quickly. It was also during the Victorian era that most of the country’s piers were built. These iron structures were initially built as landing stages for the many pleasure boats which visited the new resorts, but other attractions were quickly added to them, and the pier soon became the place to walk, sit and ______, listen to music or watch entertainers. The pleasure of the pier is best summed up by the _______ John Betjeman who described it as “a walk on the sea without the disadvantage of being seasick.” Southend Pier was opened in 1889, but was extended in 1929, making it the longest pleasure pier in the world, at 2158 metres.
ENGLAND: EXPLORING the beautiful PIER of SKEGNESS BEACH ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the world famous Skegness Pier which is a pleasure pier in Skegness, England. Opened in June 1881, it was at the time the fourth longest in England, originally stretching a length of 562 m (1,844 ft). When originally built, it was a T-shaped pier with a saloon/concert hall at the pier head. Steamboat trips ran from the pier to Norfolk until 1910. During World War II, the pier closed in an attempt to prevent enemy invasion. A severe storm in 1978 caused significant damage to the pier, isolating the pier head and shelters which were ultimately demolished in the mid-1980s due to the significant costs of restoration. A part of the pier caught fire whilst demolition was taking place.
The pier has had various renovations in modern times, including redecking and waterproofing, allowing for operation during winter periods and permitting usage during rainy conditions.
England, birthplace of Shakespeare and The Beatles, is a country in the British Isles bordering Scotland and Wales. The capital, London, on the River Thames, is home of Parliament, Big Ben and the 11th-century Tower of London. It's also a multicultural, modern hub for the arts and business. Other large cities are Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol and the university centres of Oxford and Cambridge.

(This is a higher-quality version of one of BFIFilms' most popular titles)
This film is tricky to describe: is it a boat study, a film-poem, an experiment, a picture postcard? One thing is certain: it's a rare colour snapshot of the Thames and London in the 1930s - and it looks quite magical.
Its artistic qualities may look a bit old-fashioned to us today; the slow pace, orchestral music and moody colours definitely belong to a bygone era, strikingly peaceful and undemanding. Yet colour film was still a novelty for audiences in 1935, and the photography (using the new Gasparcolor system) succeeds in accentuating the sharp contrast between the vivid green banks of the countryside and the drab tones of the industrial landscape. Places to see in ( St Neots - UK )
Places to see in ( St Neots - UK )
St Neots is a town and civil parish in the non metropolitan county of Cambridgeshire, England, within the historic county of Huntingdonshire, next to the Bedfordshire county border. St Neots lies on the banks of the River Great Ouse in the Huntingdonshire District, 15 miles (24 km) west of Cambridge and 49 miles (79 km) north of central London.
St Neots is the largest town in Cambridgeshire with a population of approximately 40,000 in 2014. The town is named after the Cornish monk Saint Neot, whose bones were subject to translation from the hamlet of St Neot on Bodmin Moor on consecration of the Priory of St Neots c. 980.
Pilgrimage to St Neots brought prosperity for the town, and it was granted a market charter in 1130. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the town enjoyed further prosperity through corn milling, brewing, stagecoach traffic and railways. After the Second World War, the town and its industry grew rapidly as London councils paid for new housing to be built in the town to rehouse families from London. The first London overspill housing was completed in the early 1960s.
St Neots lies in the valley of the River Great Ouse, partly on the flood plain and partly on slightly higher ground a little further from the water. The Great Ouse is a mature river, once wide and shallow but now controlled by weirs and sluices and usually constrained in a well-defined channel. St Neots developed at the site of a ford where overland routes converged. This was replaced by a medieval bridge, and today there are two further crossings just outside the town, one to the north and another to the south.
St Neots is approximately 49 miles north of London. It is close to the south-western boundary of Huntingdonshire District, and both the city of Cambridge and the county town of Bedford are nearby. St Neots railway station is located on the East Coast Main Line and provides half-hourly trains south to London (London King's Cross) and north to Peterborough. Journey times to London King's Cross typically range from 36 minutes to one hour. The station is managed and served by Great Northern.
St Neots is bypassed by the A1 which links the town by road with London to the south and Peterborough to the north, while the nearby A14 provides access to the Midlands and East Anglia. Regular local buses are provided by Stagecoach in Huntingdonshire and Go Whippet. St Neots is served by the cross country X5 service that runs between Cambridge and Oxford.
St Neots Museum, housed in the town's Victorian Police Station and Magistrates Court, has local history collections covering the town's rich past including a display about James Toller, the Eynesbury Giant, a resident from the 18th century who measured over 8 ft in height. There is also a gallery with temporary exhibitions by local creatives including fine art, ceramics, sculpture and illustration.
( St Neots - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of St Neots . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in St Neots - UK

Eurostar to London | Journeys End | Can't Believe We DID THIS!
Our Sydney to London overland adventure comes to a climax. All good things must come to an end. For us, 25 000km of overland travel ended with us finally reaching London....
In 2018, Sally and Ed embarked on a journey to end all journeys. We travelled more than 25 000km overland from Sydney, Australia to London, United Kingdom. It was awesome.
Our journey began with a 14 day cruise with Royal Caribbean from Sydney to Singapore. We then made our way overland (and sea) by bus, speed boat, ferry and train through South East Asia to Vietnam. From there we caught a bus into China.
China was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Three weeks on the high speed rail zipping around China was the perfect way to see the marvellous country. From Beijing we joined the Transmongolian railway and made our way into Mongolia.
We joined up with a tour company in Mongolias capital, Ulaanbaator, called Dragoman. We travelled with them for three weeks around Mongolia's incredible landscapes. Once back in UB, we were back on the Trans-mongolian Railway and into Russia.
Spending a month in Russia was one of the best things we've ever done. Exploring Siberia is an absolute must for any die-hard adventure seeker. It's beautiful. We now hit the trans-siberian railway which we travelled along to Moscow, then Saint Petersburg.
From Russia's most western city we headed north and across the border into Finland. We'd finally made it to Europe (yay)!
Once we were in Europe, we essentially made a b-line towards London. We had the pleasure of stopping off in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Brussels before finally jumping on the Eurostar to London.
This overland journey has been one of the most challenging and interesting experiences in our lives. It's reenforced our love of travel and has got us psyched for Season 2. Yes, there's going to be a Season 2! But shhh, only people that read this far will know that.

Kolkata country boats
Boatman rowing away with passengers using oars :
The river Ganga flows by Kolkata, seperating the city from Howrah. To be very specific, it is actually the river Hooghly, the largest Indian distributary of Ganga that flows here, but is mostly referred to as Ganga.
Kolkata has numerous ghats (= small jetteys for boats) along the Ganga. In olden days, when transportation by boat was very much popular and unavoidable, people resorted to using these ghats for embarking on vessels that took them even to North India! But time has changed, and other faster modes of conveyence have taken their place. But, the ghats and small boats still thrive on the banks of Ganga. They are mainly used for point to point crossings, for pleasure trips and also for fishing!
(Courtesy:
Kolkata served as the capital of India during the British Raj until 1911, when its perceived geographical disadvantages and a growing nationalism in Bengal led officials to shift the capital to New Delhi. The city is noted for its vibrant political culture. It was a center of the Indian struggle for independence and remains a hotbed of contemporary politics. Once the center of modern education, science, culture, and politics in India, Kolkata witnessed economic stagnation in the years following India's independence in 1947. However, since the year 2000, economic rejuvenation has led to an acceleration in the city's growth. Like other metropolitan cities in developing countries, Kolkata continues to deal with contemporary urban problems like pollution and traffic congestion. Despite such problems, it remains the dominant urban area of eastern India and the major economic, educational and cultural hub.

Enjoying a beer in the 1950s
Thames ship taking holidaymakers down to Margate and Southend. Tower Bridge in the background. Tourists sit on deck and are served glasses of beer. A waiter serves a beer to two male customers in the outdoor restaurant of London Airport. The waiter carefully pours a bottle of beer into a glass, with a white napkin draped over this arm. All very formal for beer! Brief clips of other people all enjoying a beer. A rural scene with farmers taking a rest from haymaking. A man out fishing on a boat. A pleasure boat on a canal is loaded with crates of beer. An agricultural shows where people sit at outside tables with a beer. Horses pass the post at Royal Ascot. Two men pour beers in celebration. The World’s SHORTEST Flight….FAILED
I traveled to Kirkwall in Scotland to try to fly on the World’s Shortest scheduled passenger flight between Westray and Papa Westray. Flights on the route are scheduled for one and a half minutes with actual flying time is closer to one minute. The record was set at 53 seconds.
After a few amazing inter island flights on LoganAir Britten-Norman Islander the day before, I had a dramatic change in the weather and suffered a set back.
Throughout my inter-island flights, I’ve learnt these flights are crucial to support the remote community in Scotland. I also traveled on Logan Air Saab-2000, the world’s fastest turboprop from Aberdeen to Kirkwall.

Join me for an exciting look into the short flights between the different constituent islands of the Orkney Islands in Northern Scotland. These island hopping flights are a real lifeline service for the inhabitants of these tiny Scottish islands and are subsidised by the British government to ensure that residents of the islands are not dependent upon a ferry service which only operates once a week and is vulnerable to being cancelled due to the frequent bad weather which plagues the area.
It’s a real treat to be able to meet the local pilots who make it all possible and to hear from passengers about how much these flight services mean to them. Some of the Orkney islands have less than 100 inhabitants, but these essential flight services ensure that these small communities and their unique culture can continue well into the future.
I start in Aberdeen International airport, from where I travel to Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney islands. The flight is operated by Loganair and takes 25 minutes to complete at an altitude of 14,000 feet. At the last minute, there is a pleasant surprise when the flight is seemingly upgraded from the Saab 340 to the Saab 2000 aeroplane. The difference between these two is very noticeable indeed with the former being far less powerful with only 1750 shaft horsepower in each engine whereas the Saab 2000 has a huge 4100 shaft horsepower on either side which incidentally makes the Saab 2000 the world’s fastest turboprop passenger aeroplane. The Saab 2000 is also much more comfortable – despite the small size of the aeroplane, there is surprisingly more leg room with each individual seat than you would find with the likes of the Boeing 737 or the Airbus A320 – brilliant!
Upon arriving at Kirkwall, I meet a senior pilot who has been flying these short flights between the Orkney islands for years and he outlines the tour of the Orkney Islands which we will be taking by air. I travel with him in the cockpit as we start by flying to North Ronaldsay, which is 25 nautical miles away and takes 15 minutes. From there, it’s on to Papa Westray which takes 8 minutes and then we go back to Kirkwall which takes a further 12 minutes.
We also fly between Sanday and Stronsay which takes between 3 and 4 minutes and is therefore probably the second shortest scheduled airline flight in the world. The flights have a really lovely homely and local communication touch and feel to them, with one couple even getting the pilot to check on the well-being of their dinner in the hold (a pie, I’m told!)
The weather back in Kirkwall is pleasant – even in June the temperature is around 11 degrees but the sun is out and it’s not raining so you can’t complain!
Our final flight was to be the world’s shortest scheduled airline flight, at just two minutes (though it can be done in less than 60 seconds if the wind is blowing in the right direction) between Westray and Papa Westray. This flight is operated as a round trip between Westray, Papa Westray and Kirkwall and is run for the benefit of those in Westray who need to get to Kirkwall.
Unfortunately, the changeable British weather scuppers my plans, with thick fog rolling in severely reducing visibility and forcing the operators to cancel the flight four hours after it was due to take off. It’s a shame as I had really wanted to get my Orkney Inter Island Air Service certificate for taking the world’s shortest flight but it wasn’t to be on this occasion. Never mind though – I’ll definitely be back and hopefully the weather we will be better then.
What did you think of the whole Orkney Island hopping experience? Let me know in the comments section down below and, as always, thanks for watching!
Gravesend To Tilbury Ferry
The Gravesend to Tilbury Ferry is an initiative promoted by Kent County Council (KCC) and Thurrock Unitary Council (TUC). The Gravesend to Tilbury ferry service has a history dating back to the 13th century and today the service operates as a passenger ferry service meeting a number of essential and recreational needs with over 80,000 passenger journeys recorded annually. The service is operated with subsidy from Kent and Thurrock Councils with KCC acting as the lead authority and holder of the operator contract.
The construction of a new pontoon off the Town Pier at Gravesend which is owned and maintained by Gravesham Council has presented an opportunity to tender openly for this passenger ferry service.
Duchess M Info:
Duchess M of the Lower Thames & Medway Passenger Boat Co, who also operate the Princess Pocahontas on excursions and charters. Duchess M is used on the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry.
Duchess M was built as the Vesta in 1956, one of the last three traditional Portsmouth-Gosport ferries (the others were the Ferry Queen (1959) and Vita (1960)). They were all diesel-powered, but otherwise the design had changed little in 80 years. All three remain in service on the Thames, Vesta as the Duchess M on the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry, and Vita & Ferry Queen with City Cruises. Their lives on the Portsmouth-Gosport ferry were fairly short, being replaced by the Gosport Queen and Portsmouth Queen in 1966. The three vessels were retained until the mid-1970s as reserve vessels and for use on seasonal harbour tours.
Vesta was sold to Thames Pleasure Craft in 1974, but was running for Thames Launches by 1977. She passed to Arthur Green as the Duchess M in 1978, and then to D.C & W.Tours in 1981. By 1983 Duchess M was under under the Capital Cruises banner. In 1991 she was on the River Tyne running charter cruises for Rolls Royce Limousine Hire, passing to River Tyne Cruises by 1995, when her fleet mates were the Catherine (ex-Tilbury-Gravesend) and Island Scene (ex-Blue Funnel). In 1997 Duchess M was back on the Thames at Southend, running services to Queenborough and Strood, plus local sea cruises. Her running mate was the Maid of the Forth. By 1999, Duchess M was the sole fleet member, and she was sold in 2002 to the Lower Thames & Medway Passenger Boat Co for use on the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry, where she remains in 2016.
