London Loop & Capital Ring Walks: history and landscape planning
The London Loop and Capital Ring orbital walks were planned in the 1990s by LPAC and the London Walking Forum. This video reviews their history and includes a clip of Tom Turner explaining the idea in 1990. The idea for orbital walks in London came, indirectly, from a proposal made for a Birmingham Inner Ring Walk, made in 1972 and using the canal towpath.

Congratulations ma'am! Gun salutes ring out across London to commemorate the Queen.
Congratulations ma'am! Gun salutes ring out across London to commemorate the Queen becoming the first British monarch to celebrate a Sapphire Jubilee.
Gun salutes have rung out across the capital to commemorate the Queen making history by becoming the first British monarch to reach their Sapphire Jubilee.
It is 65 years to the day since the Queen acceded to the throne following the death of her father, George VI, on February 6 1952.
The Queen has spent the day privately at her Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where the monarch spends her winter break.
But in London a 41-gun salute was fired by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Green Park at noon.
The Band of the Royal Artillery played a selection of celebratory music close to the firing position, and 89 horses pulled the six First World War-era 13-pounder field guns into position in the park.
The Honourable Artillery Company fired volleys at the Tower of London to mark the Sapphire Jubilee of the Queen's accession.
They fired a 62-round Royal Salute from Gun Wharf at 1pm - with an extra 21 volleys for the citizens of the City of London to show their loyalty to the monarch.
The Queen was in good spirits on Sunday as she greeted well-wishers after attending a church service at St Peter & St Paul in West Newton, Norfolk.
Three-year-old Jessica Atfield, who dressed specially for the occasion in a Union flag skirt, was delighted when she handed a bunch of flowers to the Queen.
The Queen, who missed church over Christmas due to a heavy cold, will undoubtedly be matter-of-fact about the historic occasion.
In 2015, when she thanked the nation for the kind messages after overtaking Queen Victoria to become the longest-reigning monarch in British history, she admitted bluntly that the royal record was not one to which I have ever aspired.
She added: Inevitably, a long life can pass by many milestones. My own is no exception.
The Queen celebrated her 90th birthday last year and had a busy schedule commemorating the occasion, with a walkabout, beacon-lighting and a black tie dinner for family and friends in Windsor on her actual birthday.
She often spends Accession Day privately at Sandringham, staying there through the Christmas period. She usually makes her return to Buckingham Palace a few days later.

London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom. 8.63 million people live in London,[2] which is on the River Thames.
London is the biggest city in western Europe, and the world's largest financial centre.[3][4][5]
London was founded by the Romans in ALondinium. London is also known as Lunnainn in Scottish Gaelic,[6] Llundain in Welsh and Londain in Irish.
For a long time, London was a small city. All its people lived inside the walls that were built by the Romans. This area is still called the City of London. There were many villages around the city. Gradually, more people came to live there. Then, step by step, the villages joined together into one huge city.
The city has a huge network of transport systems. The Victorians built a number of railway systems in the mid-19th century. Their main stations are in London, and the lines go to every corner of Great Britain. There were originally five major companies, which were merged into a national rail network in modern times.
There is also the world's first underground railway system, London Underground, which is the main way commuters get into London. There are five airports, though only one is actually in London (London City Airport). There is the London end of the London–Birmingham canal, which was important to the industrial 19th century.
Most people in London are British. However, London also has many immigrants. These people come from many different countries. They speak many different languages and have different religions and cultures. There are also many people from different countries who stay in London on business. Many people visit London as tourists. They may see the famous Sights of London. These sights include palaces, churches and museums.
London is one of the world's most important cities for business, finance, and politics. It is also important for culture: media, entertainment, fashion, and art.

Conquer the Capital with the London Classics triathlon
For many completing an event like the London Marathon is a huge lifetime achievement - but now an even bigger challenge has been set.
The London Classics is a new medal that will be awarded, if a participant manages to finish the capital's virtual Triathlon - being the Marathon, Ride London, and Swim Serpentine.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist Heather Stanning OBE will be one of the first to try to complete it.
The first chance for people to complete the London Classics comes at this year’s Swim Serpentine on Saturday 16 September with the introduction of the new London Classics two-mile swim.
Anyone who has completed the London Marathon since 1981 and cycled the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 since its inception in 2013 is eligible to enter.
Everyone who completes this iconic trio of events will receive a specially-designed London Classics medal and will be listed in the London Classics Hall of Fame.
New Year's Day Parade 2020: Londoners brave cold for capital's annual street festival
#lnydp #theboatrace
Thousands of Londoners have shaken off hangovers and braved the January cold to watch this year’s New Year’s Day Parade.
The 34th year of festive street celebrations kicked off at 12pm from central London’s Piccadilly and is expected to run until around 3.30pm.
The procession, featuring more than 10,000 performers from all around the world, will snake past iconic landmarks, from Nelson’s Column to Downing Street, before ending up in Westminster this afternoon.
A number of planned road closures will be in place until 6.30pm, including Regent Street, Pall Mall and Parliament Square, with bus routes three, six, nine and 11 all affected.
High school marching bands, Chinese dragon dancers, and a number of Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists are among the acts entertaining onlookers this year.
London’s New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP) has raised more than a million pounds for charity since the annual tradition began in 1987.
In a message posted on the LNYDP website, Mayor Sadiq Khan said: There really is no better place to welcome in the New Year than London.
“From the World’s greatest fireworks show on New Year’s Eve, to the fun-filled London’s New Year’s Day Parade and Festival, our capital will be celebrating our unity and diversity as we again show the World that London is open to all.
“At the New Year’s Day Parade, more than 10,000 performers from more than 20 nationalities will stand side by side in celebration. From dancers to marching bands, and giant balloons to stunt riders, they will turn some of our most iconic streets into a sea of joy and colour.
“It will truly be a spectacular way to welcome in 2020, so whether you are a Londoner, a visitor or one of the millions watching at home, I’d like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!”
Every year the event attracts more than 500,000 spectators, with millions more watching on TV, according to the parade’s website.
