Cardinal Place One, London, England. / Unusual Architecture
The front of the The Cardinal Place One Building located on Victoria Street in Westminster, London, England.
[[ An Unusually Sharp Building ]]
You are looking at an intimidating entrance of the Cardinal Place Building One located in London, England.
Huge concrete encased steel beams were found spanning the Circle and District line London Underground tunnels that pass beneath the site.
Hydro-demolition in the form of high pressure lances was used to cut the concrete from the steel beams which were removed using a 1,000 tonne crane. A concrete transfer structure was then constructed to divert loading away from the tunnels which remained operational throughout.
Risk Analysis:
Detailed risk analysis and assessment enabled the use of 1.8m diameter piles within 1m of the tunnels. We calculated vibration limits for demolition operations and undertook safe load assessment of the tunnels for all construction and abnormal loads.
Design & Architectural Information:
Cardinal Place is a retail and office development in London, near Victoria Station and opposite Westminster Cathedral. The site consists of three buildings covering over a million square feet on Victoria Street next door to Portland House, and was designed by EPR Architects and built by Sir Robert McAlpine.
Quick facts:
General information, Status ...
The topping out ceremony was held in December 2004, and performed byCardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor,Lord McAlpine, and Ian J. Henderson, outgoing chief executive of the site's developers Land Securities.
The £200m development was built directly over the District & Circle line Underground tunnels which actually pass through the basement.
The buildings rest on rubber shock absorbers to prevent vibrations from the passing trains. The project includes 550,000 square feet (51,000 m2) of office space and 100,000 square feet (9,300 m2) of retail.
Lessees:
Microsoft UK currently occupy the first floor of the building, the second floor is occupied by EDF Energy, the fifth by EDF Energy & EDF Trading, the sixth floor is occupied by Experian, and the seventh by Kazakhmys.
Description of Cardinal Place:
Cardinal Place is a mixed-use building in Victoria, London SW1.
Since opening in January 2006, Cardinal Place has become one of the most recognisable sights in Victoria, the dramatic sweep of its glass façade narrowing to a single point at the corner of Victoria Street and Bressenden Place.
The estate includes three main buildings - 16 Palace Street and 80 and 100 Victoria Street - linked by attractive public gardens and thoroughfares. 160,000 square feet of offices have caught the interest of blue-chip businesses from sectors rarely seen in Victoria before, including Microsoft.
Meanwhile, 24 new retail and restaurant brands have arrived, including a Marks & Spencer anchor store. Above it, you'll find a roof garden offering an oasis of tranquility. Then there's the SW1 Gallery, a cultural hub at the heart of this new community.
The final part of the mix is The View - a complex of 124 residential apartments with all-glass walls opening onto broad balconies.
Net Internal Areas:
Office: 51,840 sq m (558,010 sq ft)
Retail: 9,710 sq m (104,480 sq ft)
