The World's Smallest Police Station
The World’s Smallest Police Station is located in Carrabelle, Florida on US Highway 98 on the Forgotten Coast. The town is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 85 miles east of Panama City Beach. It is the town’s biggest tourist attraction.
In 1947, Albin Westberg became police chief and the only day policeman in Carrabelle. He and his night officers had to protect the citizens, answer calls, pump water for the tug boats at the city dock, catch speeders on US 98(old 319) and tend to all the prisoners in the jail at old City Hall. They needed help. In 1953 the phone company installed a phone in a call box bolted to the wall of the building on the north east corner of Tallahassee Street and the highway. The officers could answer the calls while out walking the beat. Then they began having problems with folks making unauthorized long distance calls on the police phone. Vandals loved to mess it up too.
Johnnie Mirabelle, St. Joe Telephone and Telegraph’s lone Carrabelle employee at the time, first tried moving the call box to another building, but the illegal calls continued. He also noticed the policeman would get drenched while answering the calls in the rain. When his company decided to replace a worn out phone booth, he decided to solve both problems at once by putting the police phone in the old booth.
On March 10, 1963, Mirabelle with the help of Deputy Sheriff Wilburn “Curley” Messer, moved the phone booth to its current site on U.S. 98 under the chinaberry tree. The Chief hired a man to do the lettering to mark it as the City of Carrabelle Police Station. It worked well and increased the efficiency of the two man police force. They could park the patrol car in the shade, do required paperwork, and listen for the phone while watching for speeders and other suspicious characters. The booth did protect the officers from the elements, but some people still snuck in to make long distance calls. Eventually the dial was removed from the phone, making it impossible for folks to call out. It continued to serve the police of Carrabelle for decades.
Sarah Purcell, the host of the television show Real People was visiting her father and discovered it. She had to feature it on the show in 1991 where they dubbed it as the “World’s Smallest Police Station.” Later that year Johnny Carson had a lively interview with the Carrabelle Police Chief Jessie Gordon Smith on the Tonight Show. It has been featured in other television shows, That’s Amazing, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, the Today Show, and in the movie Tate’s Hell.

Shipwrecks on Dog Island, FL unearthed by Hurricane Michael
It seems as if Hurricane Michael left behind an apology gift for Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Hurricane Michael’s storm surge dredged up a handful of 19th Century ships that washed ashore Dog Island, Florida during the 1899 Carrabelle Hurricane. These old wooden ships now sit in plain view near the west end of Dog Island, which is located just 3.5 miles offshore from Carrabelle, Florida.
The Carrabelle History Museum hosted this event on January 26, 2019 as part of its series of historical talks sponsored by Franklin County Tourist Development Council. This talk focuses on the newly-exposed shipwrecks uncovered after Hurricane Michael, their possible identification and the history of these shipwrecks.

Explore Dog Island’s rich maritime history and learn about the history of the shipwrecks uncovered on Dog Island by Hurricane Michael in October 2018. The Carrabelle History Museum hosted this event on January 26, 2019 as part of its series of historical talks sponsored by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.
In prehistory Dog Island was used as a campground by Paleo-Indians. It served as a safe harbor for European explorers and smugglers and later for fishermen and lumber tradesmen. Most recently, Dog Island served as an amphibious training site during World War II. This program covers some of the maritime archaeology of Dog Island and its historical context. This talk focuses on the newly-exposed shipwrecks uncovered after Hurricane Michael, their possible identification and the history of these shipwrecks.
The Carrabelle History Museum was honored to host Ivor Mollema, senior archaeologist at the Underwater Archaeology Department for Florida’s Bureau of Archaeological Research, Division of Historical Resources. As a senior archaeologist, Mollema runs site investigations, manages the video and photographic documentation of Florida’s submerged archaeological heritage, spearheads the 3D modeling efforts and coordinates public outreach efforts.

The Carrabelle History Museum houses many interesting and unusual artifacts. One of the most fascinating is a 20,000 year old oyster shell, which came from a limestone pit and has been carbon dated by the State of Florida. Visitors to the museum are allowed to, not only see this artifact, but actually hold it and feel how heavy it is.
The Museum is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10-5 pm and is located at 106 SE Avenue B, in downtown Carrabelle, a rural coastal city on the Forgotten Coast of Florida, 65 miles southwest of the capital city of Tallahassee. Check out our website at carrabellehistorymuseum.org.

Carrabelle Florida USA is located in the panhandle just outside the historic Apalachicola and St. George Island. It is also just an hour southwest of the state capital, Tallahassee. Carrabelle is home to beautiful beaches, rich marshes, large forests, and a laid back and rural style of living.
There is much more to do in Carrabelle, once you arrive by plane or automobile, than fishing and enjoying its natural beauty. There are 750,000 acres of surrounding forest, which is a template for many recreational activities.
One can enjoy the outdoors while living in a quaint and friendly town. The beaches here are both salt and freshwater, which also cater to the ultimate fisherman's needs. With beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico, seafood lovers, museum fans, nature enthusiasts, sailors, scuba divers, boaters, hunters, history buffs, vacation goers, and the thousands of residents are lucky to bask in Carrabelle's splendor. The Army-Navy Screen Magazine 03 1943 The entire newsreelThe Army-Navy Screen Magazine was produced by the U.S. Army Signal Corps Pictorial Service, under the supervision of Col. Frank Capra, who came up with the idea. It was released twice a month and shown to military troops as a 20-minute newsreel. By the end of the war, the Army-Navy Screen Magazine reached an enormous weekly audience of 4.2 million. It had become for American soldiers all over the world a communal experience that greatly influenced their perception of the war. It featured short documentary films, news from back home, and short training films like Dr. Seuss Private Snafu cartoons. I ve uploaded the entire Screen Magazine and also each segment as a separate file (some editions are comprised of 1 long film, though. Description Reel 1, Part 1, troops at Camp Johnston, Fla., abandon equipment while swimming, jump from towers, and swim under burning oil. Part 2 contrasts prewar N.Y.C. traffic and bright lights with wartime blackout conditions. Cars are stored because of the gas shortage; consumers use ration books for food. Part 3, Russian troops use sleds, eat at field kitchens, and snipe at Germans. Reel 2, Part 1 describes V-mail procedures cutting, microfilming, transport, photographic enlargement, and processing. Part 2, Gen. Vandegrift describes the Guadalcanal campaign. Shows the landing, brief combat scenes, and Japanese prisoners.

Florida Museum of Natural History, South Florida People & Environments Exhibit. The sole purpose of visiting this museum was to see in person the burial-post animal effigies, carved by the people who inhabited the area now known as the Fort Center Archeological Site along Fisheating Creek and to stand in front of those artifacts was everything I imagined it would be and more. What was a pleasant surprise was the remainder of this incredible display of South Florida’s Aboriginal artifacts, which are easily the most impressive to be found and fitting that they are deposited in this center of education.
Panhandle Pioneer Settlement, Blountstown, Fla.
The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement is a lovely outdoor museum of life in rural Calhoun County, Florida, before WW2. It was a Saturday morning in mid-June, so not many other people were there. It is also in the Central Time Zone, so keep that in mind for the times when visiting, because previous attempts to visit here were when it was closed. It is in Blountstown, Florida, in the back of Sam Atkins Park, which is hard to find if you don't have directions. You can find out more information at their website at .
