Thank you for watching & please subscribe us!
This week’s Middle Tennessee Monday takes us 45 minutes out of Nashville to eastern Wilson County.
Every week News 2 is on the lookout for some of the best kept secrets in Middle Tennessee and this week we found small town Watertown in Wilson County, about 40 miles east of Nashville.
It’s like taking a step back in time.
Watertown Chamber of Commerce President, Cathy McCook, says, “It’s interesting the different opportunities there are for people to enjoy this slower pace of life here.”
Nearly all of Watertown, Tennessee, is on the historic register.
The picturesque town has been home to many music videos, including Darius Rucker’s “Wagon Wheel.”
All of the shops have been architecturally preserved to make visitors feel like little has changed since the turn of the century and they love visitors.
A few times a year as many as 500 people take a train into Watertown.
It’s a quick getaway to small town life. Visitors stroll from shop to shop and eat at all of the local favorites.
Nona Lisa’s Pizzeria spoiled News 2 with some of their famous “Nonna bread”. They’re always happy to see first timers.

Second to Saluda: Battling Copper Ridge Grade
It’s February 7th, 2019 and we’re trackside once again in the Volunteer State. We would be spending time along Norfolk Southern’s former Central Division, now known as the “Alabama Division,” on both the K&O District and the CNO&TP just west of Knoxville, Tennessee. The Norfolk Southern K&O District crosses over top the CSX KD Subdivision at Dossett Yard. It’s rare, but sometimes, trains from both railroads occasionally meet here. We were fortunate to have stumbled upon CSX Q542 at Dossett, but would spend the rest of our day on Norfolk Southern after receiving word that 23G, the southbound Louisville, KY to Norfolk, VA intermodal train would be taking the K&O District east around 10AM.
The Chestnut Ridge and Copper Ridge Grades are located between Clinton and Powell, Tennessee on the K&O District and are known for being two of the steepest active mainline railroad grades on the Norfolk Southern System. Chestnut Ridge’s peak is 3.53% near Pat Shawn Drive, immediately followed by Copper Ridge which has an average gradient of 1.7% over its entire length. In fact, these two grades were second to Saluda in steepness on the NS system when the W-Line was still active in North Carolina. These two intense gradients pose a difficult challenge for train crews along the K&O and helpers are almost always required for trains to make it over the grade.

TRANSCRIPT:
Before Jason, before Freddy, before Casper, There was The Bell Witch, one of America’s first popular monster stories.
1804, John Bell and his family move to a farm in Adams, Tennessee and start buying up lots of land, including some from their neighbor, Kate Batts. Batts felt cheated by the deal, but soon falls ill. On her deathbed, she swears to haunt John Bell to death from beyond the grave.
Legend has it, in 1817, things start getting weird in the Bell Family house. It begins with noises within the walls, escalating into people being pinched and slapped relentlessly, objects being thrown and animals being spooked! No one could see the ghost, but they could definitely hear her and her constant taunts.
Soon, the word gets out and the house becomes a tourist destination, with people coming from far and wide to visit the property and the foul-mouthed ghost. Its not long before the story reaches a hot-headed General in Nashville whom the three oldest Bell boys had served under, named Andrew Jackson. The future president had made a name for himself in The War of 1812 as a rowdy man of the people.
In 1819, he assembles a posse of men to go after the Bell Witch, including a self-proclaimed “witch-slayer, (who doesn't have a name, so let's call him Phil). Jackson loads up a wagon and heads to Adams, Tennessee. Why? Mostly for fun.
A few miles before they reach the Bell farm, the wagon freezes in place on a clear road. The horses pull as hard as they can, but it's like the wagon is glued to the ground.
Jackson raises his hands and says By the eternal, boys, it's the witch!
From the bushes comes a shrill metallic voice,
All right General, let the wagon move on, I will see you again to-night.
The wagon starts to move again but the men can find no trace of anyone in the area, so they press on.
Jackson arrives at the Bell House at nightfall. As the family settles in for the night, the men gather around the fire, waiting.
After several uneventful hours, Phil the witch-slayer springs to his feet, lifts up his pistol and explains he has been packing silver bullets and the witch must be afraid.
Well then she should show her braggart's colors, says Jackson.
Immediately, the witch screams out,
Here I am, as promised, General and ready for business...
An invisible force starts beating Phil brutally. He tries to fire his pistol, but it won't work.
I'll make it easy, go ahead and shoot for Christ's sakes!
But no one can see anything and Phil can't fire his gun.
My turn!
She slams Phil against the wall, drags him across the room by his leg, and kicks him in the butt right out the door.
There's one more fraud among you and I will reveal them before the night's over!
Jackson's men beg him to leave.
I'd rather fight the British again over this witch! He says, but makes them stay, so he can figure out himself who this fraud was.
They all settle into their tents outside the house for the night with the witch continuing to verbally abuse them, most of which was calling Andrew Jackson's wife fat.
No one knows exactly what happened next, but Jackson and his men were spotted the next morning in Springfield on their way back to Nashville. Jackson would never speak of this event, most likely because he was too embarrassed and with the dirtiest election of all time coming up, he probably didn't want it brought up.
While Jackson would go on to become President, the witch continued to haunt the Bell Family until John Bell's sudden death in 1820. After he died, the witch sang out to the family that she had poisoned him. To the townspeople, whom this was all pretty common-place, this seemed about right. It remains the only recorded ghost murder.
Today, there is a memorial on the Bell farm, the only one in The United States devoted to a ghost. As for Phil, well he went on to become known as President Abraham Lincoln.
Stop it.
Briley Parkway Speed Limit Audit - 55MPH Nashville, TN
Some of the roads in Nashville are posted with ridiculous speed limits. The most notorious, aside from I-65 where it too goes down to 55mph, is Briley Parkway. I drove the stretch of Briley Parkway that has no intersections, only controlled access with on and off ramp exits. This is between I-40 and I-65. Your chances of getting pulled over on Briley are high (even if you're not speeding as I found out). I have always found that going the speed limit is rare on this road and those that do find themselves passed and run up on by much faster drivers.
It can create a dangerous situation for sure. It can also contribute to incidents of road rage when other drivers become frustrated with the slower driver who is obeying the law. It can also cause dangerous conditions and accidents.
Watch and see how many vehicles pass me up before I hit the ramp to I-65.
Equipment I use:
This was a very inexpensive Dashcam but works very well.
The setup I use now is this: (highly recommended)
Best Bundled Value Blackvue 900s with 4k Recording
This is the cheapest 2 Channel (Front and rear) Dash cam from Blackvue
This High end Blackvue records in 4k and straight to the cloud as well. I have this in 2 of my Vehicles
GoPro Session for quick, one button handheld or mounted shots:
This is a great hand held versatile handle and stand for GoPro
Smaller floating GoPro handle
High capacity, fast SD card. Good to have extras on hand to keep recording while you transfer footage.

Driving through Etowah, Tennessee in a thunderstorm
Etowah is a city in McMinn County, Tennessee, United States.
Etowah was founded in 1906, primarily as a location for a depot on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) line as part of a more direct route between Atlanta and Cincinnati. The etymology of the town name is unclear, but local folklore states that a train crew brought a sign reading Etowah from the Etowah River, and the name stuck. The word Etowah comes from the Muskogee/Creek word italwa meaning town
The newest plant (Plant number 6) of the Waupaca Foundry, Inc. is located in Etowah. The plant makes quality grey and ductile steel components that are used in the automotive and farming markets. The foundry makes parts (such as control arms, differential covers and cases, and brake calipers) for the new Ford F-series heavy duty trucks, Dodge Caravan, Hummer H2, GMC Envoy, Chrysler 300C/Dodge Charger, and the Toyota Camry. Etowah also claims two other plants, Johns Manville and Huber, even though neither are actually located in the city limits.

One Last Ride - The Final Run of the Keokuk Junction Railway F Units
8/7/2019 - Keokuk Junction Railway's Ex-Canadian National/VIA Rail FP9 locomotives have been a staple of the railroad since their introduction to Pioneer Railcorp system in 2007. For over 10 years, the classic locomotives served the KJRY on freight service, quickly making a name for themselves with fans as they were the only F Units in the country regularly running revenue trains!
In May of this year, it was announced that Pioneer Railcorp (the parent company of the KJRY) would be merged with BRX Transportation Holdings, and the merger was approved in July. Rumors began to spread that this new management could put an expiration date on the KJRY F Units. And it wasn't hard to believe it, as it is pretty understandable in all fairness. One of the FP9As was already sidelined due to mechanical issues, and seeing as these locomotives are considerably costly to maintain being as old as they are, it's easy to see where this would come from, as disappointing to fans, like myself, as it would be.
Sure enough, news spread in early August that the remaining 2 F Units would be making their final journey to La Harpe on the 7th of this month. After arriving at the engine shops there, they were to be sent to long-term storage, potentially for the rest of their existence. Me and just about every buff this side of the state, as well as some out-of-staters, gathered to chase the F Units leading one last time, westbound from Mapleton, IL to La Harpe, IL. While I'm sad to see them go, it was a spectacular chase, and I hope you enjoy the video I have to show for it!
Roster:
1. PREX FP9A #1750
2. PREX FP9B #1761
3. PREX GP20u #2003
Time-stamps:
(0:30) - The train reverses at Mapleton, IL to go drop off a car and pick up another car at the nearby yard just east of here
(1:28) - About 45 minutes later, their work at Mapleton is complete and they begin the westbound charge
(2:13) - Just west of Mapleton (full train)
(4:00) - Coming through downtown Glasford, IL
(5:01) - West of Glasford
(5:36) - Crossing County Rd 6 in Rowalts, IL
(6:39) - Arriving in Canton, IL
(8:56) - Picking up a scrap gondola off the Canton siding
(13:35) - After attaching the gondola to the train, the train departs Canton
(15:07) - Coming out of Cuba, IL
(16:25) - Rolling through a woods south of Marietta, IL (full train)
(19:06) - Arguably the fastest I would catch the train, it moves at speed out of New Philadelphia, IL
(20:57) - East of Bushnell, IL as seen from the Hwy 41 overpass
(21:57) - While waiting to see the train cross the BNSF diamond in Bushnell, a BNSF westbound ethanol train rolls through town
(23:36) - The KJRY train crosses the diamond
(24:44) - Crossing County Rd 1500 E near Good Hope, IL
(25:45) - Coming through Good Hope
(27:19) - After dropping off their train in a siding just east of town to make room in La Harpe, two lite PREX GP20us roll west through Blandinsville, IL
(28:26) - Shortly following the lite power, our train comes through Blandinsville (full train)
(31:01) - Crossing over Hwy 9, east of La Harpe, IL
(32:16) - The train arrives in La Harpe. The power was disconnected from the train, and then moved to the engine facility
(34:54) - One final goodbye to the KJRY F Units

A Ride On The Memphis Riverfront Loop Trolley
The MATA Trolley is a heritage streetcar system operating in Memphis in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It has operated since April 29, 1993.
As of 2008, the system consists of three lines: the Main Street Trolley, the Madison Avenue Loop and the Riverfront Loop. These lines are operated by the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA), and were put into operation over fifty years after Memphis' original streetcar network was dismantled in the 1940s. The trolleys used are almost all rehabilitated, vintage streetcars. The original three cars in operation on opening day were all formerly used in Porto, Portugal, and are Car 187, circa 1927; Car 194, circa 1935; and Car 204, circa 1940. These cars are each 30 feet 6 inches (9.3 m) long, 7 feet 10 inches (2.39 m) wide and weigh 25,820 pounds (11.71 t) without passengers. The cars were restored by Kerns-Wilcheck Associates of Memphis. Three additional ex-Porto cars (156, 164 and 180) joined them within weeks, and the fleet had six cars (all ex-Porto single-truckers) by May 1993.
Between the mid-1990s and 2003, the Gomaco Trolley Company supplied an additional ten cars: nine reconditioned Melbourne, Australia type W2 cars and one single-truck car (No. 1979) that was built new by Gomaco in 1993, originally as a demonstrator. There is also car 1794, which was originally an open-sided car from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but was heavily rebuilt and enclosed before entering service in Memphis. The most recent addition, in early 2004, is a replica Birney Safety Car, manufactured by Gomaco, the same cars used on the TECO Line Streetcar System in Tampa, Florida.
The fleet and overhead wires were converted from trolley pole to pantograph current collection in early 2003, during a three-month suspension of service which started on January 5, 2003. Source: Wikipedia.
