Day Tour Amalfi Coast details:
Positano - The busy central Piazza dei Mulini is connected to a narrow downhill path and some occasional flights of steps that lead to the seafront. At Piazza dei Mulini, you must leave the car as all streets leading to the waterfront are for pedestrians only. The only way to reach restaurants situated on the beach that serve fresh daily fish, is to go on foot! These streets also lead to the cathedral, ceramic shops, fruit vendors, and apparel retail shops. Positano is alive at night as well, with exotic nightclubs such as Music on the Rocks and various bars and cafes that remain open until the sun comes up. There is a short walk uphill to return to the car, ascending the mountain, returning to the main coastal road that leads to Amalfi.
Amalfi -- This coastal town is situated on a seafront port and a long stretch of pebbled beach. In front of the port of Amalfi, is the only bus station along the coast. Behind this square lies the main shopping street of Amalfi, that ends at the furthest and highest point of the town. Along the pedestrian street are various bars and cafes, not to mention the many shops selling limoncello, casual apparel, swimwear, gifts, basic groceries, and of course, ceramics. However, if one would like to see more than just shops, Amalfi has some interesting sights to explore such as: a spectacular cathedral along the coast, and a paper factory and its museum. There are also some highly recommended local restaurants, which your driver can suggest.
Ravello -- The road to Ravello is a slow uphill drive where you will pass several wineries and olive factories. Ravello is a rural village un spoilt by tourism, perched on top of a mountain cliff situated above Amalfi and Minori. It is famous for its breath-taking views and ancient monuments best exemplified by the gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. In high season, these gardens are rich in sweet secants of blooming flowers, shadows of flora and perfume of lemons. There are also many classical concerts held in the gardens of Villa Rufolo, located just off the main square of Ravello; tickets cost approximately 20 Euros each. Apart from the main cathedral and the history museum constructed in the basement of the cathedral, there are many other churches to visit near the town square. Along the narrow arches of Via Roma, there are a few small boutiques, and some traditional local restaurants with unique and exceptional cuisine.

TRAVEL VLOG: AMALFI COAST (POSITANO, PRAIANO, RAVELLO)
Jess and Pete go meet...The Amalfi Coast. We start in Positano, then introduce you to the more affordable fishing village of Praiano, then show you how you can get luxury views for a bargain in Ravello. We can't all rent a Yacht like Beyonce and Jay Z, but at about 8:30 in, we'll show you how you can still take a beautiful boat tour without breaking the bank! MORE DETAILS...
HERE'S OUR TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE AMALFI COAST:
Where to stay:
Positano is the big tourist attraction and the idyllic town you will see on postcards of the Amalfi Coast, but hotels can be overpriced there. Having said that, we stayed one night at a little hotel called Punta Regina with a lovely deck and pool area with bar service high above the town (about 20 minute hike down stairs to the beach area). It was so relaxing to have a glass of aperol spritz with a side of olives, relaxing in the sun on the deck!
We LOVED the next town Praiano, which is less developed and has a lot more old world charm. We found staff there to be extra helpful, in part because I think they are trying to get their town on the tourist map. We stayed at a beautiful boutique hotel called Villa Gianlica, which I would HIGHLY recommend for a romantic weekend. Every single room at the hotel has a nice balcony or patio area overlooking the water. The property also has a nice pool, lounge chairs, hammock, reading area and garden where they pick fruit/vegetables for the morning breakfast.
AirBnB also has great options, but just be prepared hotels/homes are built essentially into the side of the mountain so you have to climb 20-30 minutes down to get to beach level.
What to eat:
- If you are staying in Praiano, you must visit IL PIRATA. Make reservations. The restaurant sits at the bottom of the mountain on the water (quite a hike down, but worth it!) and serves fresh fish and traditional Italian food. Go during sunset for a romantic dinner!
- When you are traveling around the Amalfi coast make sure to try limoncello (lemon-based hard liquor) and granita (lemon-ice)!
What to do:
If you can do a day or half day trip to Ravello. Most beautiful town! It looks like something out of a storybook and has beautiful gardens to visit. It sits high above the water over the town of Amalfi. You are basically in the clouds looking down at the vast sea.
Small boat tour along the coast. I think we paid about 40 euro a person to go on a 3-4 hour trip along the coast, passing every town and stopping for a swim. We used the company La Sabilla and departed from the Praiano beach, Via Marina di Praia (you basically hop on at the marina near the Il Pirata Restaurant).
Beach days in Positano and Praiano (Marina di Praia). Note- beaches are rocky. Renting chairs on the beach is about 10 euro. You can also bring your own towels.
How to get around:
You can rent a car, take public buses or hire a taxi. A taxi (black car) from the Naples train station to Positano is about 120-130 euro. We used a company called Luxury Limo Positano +39 089 811 012.
In this video you'll see some of our favorite Amalfi Coast esablishments, including Belmond Hotel Caruso, Il Pirata, Villa Gianlica.
Have fun! Please let us know if you used any of our tips!
