Saranac Lake Free
Located just 9 miles northwest of the bustling tourist town of Lake Placid, Saranac Lake is the perfect escape from the high prices that accompany Lake Placid's Olympics attractions. Filled with shops, hotels and local diners, Saranac Lake is considered one of the most idyllic villages in upstate New York.
Whiteface Mountain (Lake Placid)
With the largest vertical drop on the eastern seaboard (measuring 3,430 feet), 87 trails and 11 ski lifts, Whiteface Mountain is a skier's paradise. But should you decide to visit during the warmer months, don't fret. Whiteface offers plenty of hiking and biking trails, plus several adrenaline-pumping adventures like 4x4 excursions and an airbag free-fall jump activity.
Fort Ticonderoga
Nicknamed the Key to the Continent in the 18th century, Fort Ticonderoga sits on Lake Champlain and once served as a strategic focal point during the Revolutionary War and the French and Indian War. After a careful restoration project in the 20th century, Fort Ticonderoga was reopened as a living museum, featuring everything from barracks and kitchens to cannons and an immaculately maintained garden
The Wild Center—a natural history museum that draws you into the vast beauty of Adirondack Park through interactive exhibits and hands-on learning. Check out the museum's Wild Walk Treetop Trail where a trail of bridges takes you into the forest treetop as well as animal exhibits and films that bring a new perspective to nature.
High Falls Gorge—Beautiful waterfalls are that much closer at High Falls Gorge where kid-friendly trails bring you to four waterfalls on a 22-acre nature preserve. Providing safe, easy access for visitors of all ages, this park is perfect for scenic walks, picnics, and views of the Ausable River as it cascades over granite cliffs and into the ancient gorge. Have a casual lunch onsite at the River View Cafe.
The Adirondack Coast
Copy of Ausable Chasm Tubing Basin
Wrapping along the shores of Lake Champlain, the Adirondack Coast is New York's eastern treasure, home to geologic wonders, waterfront retreats, and civil history. Head to Plattsburgh City Beach, one of the largest freshwater beaches in America, for sandy shores, kayaking, and sweeping views of Lake Champlain. Crest the waves with your rental canoe or stand-up paddleboard from The Kayak Shack—it's a fun way to get on the lake or enjoy kayak tours with the family.

2/12/11: A Snowy Climb up Cascade and Porter Mountains, Adirondack High Peaks Region, NY
One of my favorite sounds - crunching along a trail on snow shoes! This was one of my favorite days ever in the Adirondacks - the trees loaded with tons of snow, nobody out, very peaceful. At least until we hit treeline! This is video footage from our snow shoe climb of Cascade and Porter Mountains in the Adirondack High Peaks Region of New York.
Summit of Basin Mountain
Be sure to watch in HD. I apologize for the obnoxious scratching of the wind, but with gusts of 40-50 mph there was not much I could do.
Basin Mountain is located in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks in NY. Climbing to 4,827ft, Basin is ranked 9 in height. Climbed on August 24, 2011

ADIRONDACK SEVERE WINTERS & HOMESTEAD PLANNING
Winter storm Harper recently dumped 2 feet of snow in the Adirondacks and after spending the day cleaning we learned a few lessons about planning our future homestead.
We learned that we don't want to do this anymore! LOL
We love the snow but cleaning it up, not so much. For that reason we are working hard to plan our homestead so that the snow interferes in our daily life as little as possible.
If you have any suggestions and advice for homesteading in a cold climate please share it with us! We are still in the planning stages and trying to research and learn as much as we can before building. We would really appreciate your help!

A WINTER Run on New York Trails
February motivation: Find something that fills your life with passion and that brings out the best in yourself and others.
Several of us from the MPF Adventure Club met for a trail run in Harriman State Park, New York. We caught up with MPF athlete Emmanuel, who in 2018 completed the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning + 1 which includes running 5 of America’s oldest 100 mile foot races in the span of 4 months.
Old Dominion 100
Vermont 100
Western States 100
Leadville 100
Wasatch 100
We picked Emmanuel up at a nearby train station, he lives in the big apple (NYC). We then met everyone at Reeves Meadow Visitor Center in HSP. It was a beautiful winter morning, with plenty of snow and ice to run on. We used microspikes and Yaktrax’s for traction. Jay used his light and quick feet to stay upright, oh and he was also in the grippy Salomon Sense Pro 3’s.
Joe also discusses training with good friend Harry Hamilton. Harry has completed many epic ultra running races throughout the country and has transitioned into cycling over the last couple of years. He his coming off another big season of Cross and is slowly getting back on his feet again.

Riding the AMTRAK Adirondack from New York to Montreal (winter)
Riding the Adirondack, during the winter is arguably one of the most beautiful train rides one can experience in North America. The train begins by riding literally next to the Hudson river until it hits Albany. From there it diverges away from the river and goes into the Adirondack mountains: where breathtaking views of lakes, Vermont and mountains dominate the rest of the trip. Finally it enters Canada (by which point it is dark).

The Best Places to Visit in New York State, USA
The Best Places to Visit in New York State, USA
New York State holds the biggest pull for visitors from around the world. The entire state of New York has plenty of attractions to keep you entertained. Besides the urban allure, culture, and shopping of Manhattan, much of New York State is still, in many ways, waiting to be discovered. The state is endowed with outstanding beauty and diversity of scenery. Although New Yorkers have long vacationed in the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, and at Long Island beaches, most have seen too little of the state between its tourist bookends, New York City and Niagara Falls. The historic Hudson Valley, a majestic river lined with elegant estates, is finally positioning itself as a destination, not just a day trip from the city.
Planning a trip to a state as large and diverse as New York involves a lot of decision making, so in this video we've tried to give some directions. We've chosen what we feel is the very best the state has to offer -- the places and experiences you won't want to miss. This video gives you an overview of New York State's highlights to get you started planning your trip.

Windy as all get-out. Luckily wasn't raining at the moment. The most elementally-intense place on the trip, yet. The valley was glaciated, and seems to channel wind *very* well.

Letchworth State Park, NY, USA in HD
The Letchworth SP is advertised as The Grand Canyon of the East, and it certainly is quite impressive and beautiful, even though it cannot stand comparison with the Grand Canyon. This video shows views from the Gorge Trail and from West and East rims, with the Lower, Middle and Upper falls. Recorded September 2012 in HD with Panasonic TM900.
