Eijsden (about 7.000 inhabitants) is a place situated in the very south
of the European country The Netherlands. There it is located in the
southeastern part of the province of Limburg.
This village is one of the most southerly places in the Netherlands,
for in its south it is extending up to the most southerly part of the
border between the Netherlands and Belgium.
Kasteel Eijsden en haar tuinen
Het programma Natuurlijk Limburg van L1 bezocht het Kasteel in Eijsden en haar tuinen.
De Koninklijke Harmonie Sainte Cécile is sinds haar oprichting nauw verbonden met Kasteel Eijsden. De vereniging is opgericht door René Graaf Geloes en heeft onafgebroken onder presidentschap gestaan van een lid van deze Belgische Grafelijke familie. Mede hierdoor heeft het Harmonieorkest tot 1968 voortdurend onder leiding gestaan van Belgische dirigenten.
Sainte Cécile is nog steeds nauw verbonden met het kasteel en haar bewoners. De huidige president van de vereniging is Raphael Graaf de Liedekerke de Pailhe.
Tijdens de rijke historie van de vereniging zijn tal van grote en kleine evenementen op en rond het kasteel en haar tuinen georganiseerd. Zo hebben er tal van jubileumfeesten, openluchtconcerten en minivoetbaltoernooien plaatsgevonden. In 2008 was er een gezamenlijk concert met het Limburgs Symfonie Orkest (huidige Philharmonie ZuidNederland) ter gelegenheid van het 125 jarig jubileum van het LSO. Eveneens wordt er de jaarlijkse Castle Fair georganiseerd. Kasteel Eijsden is tevens het decor van de Taptoe Eijsden.
Tijdens de jaarlijkse Eijsdense Bronk wordt op de bronkmaandag, samen met de Jonkheid van Caestert, eer en hulde gebracht aan de grafelijke familie op het kasteel.
De Koninklijke harmonie Sainte Cécile is trots dat zij dit kasteel als bakermat van de vereniging mag noemen.
Kasteel Eijsden
Kasteel Eijsden, gelegen nabij de oude kern Eijsden aan de Maas, staat in de top 100 op de lijst van Nederlandse monumenten. Het is in 1636 gebouwd in opdracht van Arnold de Lamargelle, heer van Eijsden. Toeristische tips Limburg: eropuitinlimburg.com

Unique Heritage
Twickel Castle, near Delden, is located, for almost seven centuries in the middle of a beautiful estate, reaching out over five parishes. The estate in the East of the Netherlands, near the German border covers more than 4,000 hectares and includes 150 farms with agricultural land and meadows, interspersed with moorland, fens and woods. The oak woods have long been famous, not just because of their beauty, but also because of the quality of the wood they produce. The characteristic farms can be recognised by their black-and-white shutters.
History
Between 1347 and 1953, Twickel was in the possession of successive members of the same family: Van Twickelo, Van Raesfelt, Van Wassenaer Obdam and Van Heeckeren van Wassenaer. Because it was also possible for the estate to be inherited through the female line, it always remained in the family. In 1953, Baroness Van Heeckeren van Wassenaer-Countess of Aldenburg Bentinck made over the entire estate to the Twickel Foundation. After her death in 1975, her other possessions, including estates in Germany and the provinces of Gelderland and Zuid-Holland in the Netherlands, together covering some 2000 hectares, were added to the Foundation. When she set up the Foundation, Baroness Van Heeckeren determined that the castle should remain inhabited. For this reason, her second cousin, Chr. Count Zu Castell and his family are presently residing in section of the castle.
The gardens
As is the case with the castle, the landscaping of the gardens has been created over many generations. Alongside the castle there is a garden in the French neo-baroque style. The orangery to be found here dates, in its current form, to the first half of the 19th century, and serves as a winter shelter for many tropical and subtropical plants, including some 300-year-old orange trees. The 'rock garden' is situated next to the French garden, and is the personal creation of the last Lady of Twickel, Baroness van Heeckeren Van Wassenaer. In this Victorian garden, she liked to experiment with unusual plants and was inspired by the English landscape gardener, Gertrude Jekyll. The landscaping of the surrounding estate dates from about 1790. In 1830 or thereabouts, this romantic scene was extended by J.D. Zocher. And in 1888, Edouard Petzold made his mark on the extensive grounds around the castle. Recently, a restoration project is completed, based on a design by the well known Dutch landscape architect Michael van Gessel.
Next to the gardens are the walled kitchen gardens and a farmmuseum.

Valkenburg castle, of which only a ruin remains, though still impressive;
several other castles, castle farms and stately homes, mostly situated along the Geul river;
Oud-Valkenburg, a small village along the Geul with a particularly picturesque ensemble of a gothic church, two castles (Genhoes and Schaloen) and several historic farmsteads, all in local marlstone;
several watermills, two in the old town;
parts of the city walls and two of three city gates survived (Berkelpoort and Grendelpoort; there are plans for the third gate to be rebuilt);
old court building (Spaans Leenhof);
Saint Nicolas church, a Gothic church in Valkenburg with some late Medieval wood carvings;
Saint Gerlachus church in nearby Houthem Sint-Gerlach, with Baroque frescos by Johann Adam Schöpf, painted on marl;
several former marl quarries (locally called 'caves', although they are largely man-made), offering guided tours; some have interesting charcoal drawings and marl sculptures, one has been recreated as the catacombs of Rome (designed by Pierre Cuypers), another one as a coal mine; in the winter Christmas markets are held in some quarries;
a 30-metre-high (98-foot) viewing tower (Wilhelminatoren) atop a hill, connected to the town below by aerial lift;
Thermae 2000, a sauna and wellness resort;
a Holland Casino branch, as well as a large park around it (Kuurpark);
two amusement parks; one focusing on popular fairy tales (Sprookjesbos);

Ik denk dat Kwiatkowski weer de benen heeft waarmee hij twee jaar geleden zo oppermachtig sprintend de Gold Race naar zich toe trok, zegt Van den Berg.
Valverde, Matthews, Rui Costa, en Van Avermaet, allemaal hadden ze het nakijken. Kwiatkowski's concurrenten zouden hem wel vrij vroeg moeten kunnen isoleren, want Team Sky verschijnt niet bepaald met z'n sterkste ploeg aan de start.
'AGR is hoofddoel voor Matthews'
Gio Lippens zet zijn geld op Michael Matthews. Bij de perspresentatie van Team Sunweb zei hij al dat dit een van zijn hoofddoelen dit jaar is. Hij heeft deze koers met een dikke viltstift omcirkeld.
Volgens Van den Berg wordt het tijd dat Matthews eens een grote eendagskoers wint. De Clasica Almería en ritten in zowel de Tour, Giro als de Vuelta zijn natuurlijk mooie prooien, maar in de klassiekers pakt Bling tot nu toe slechts ereplaatsen. Hij heeft al eens laten zien dat hij de Limburgse klimmetjes goed kan verteren.

The collection of the Wijlre Hedge House is a gift of Jo and Marlies Eyck to the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. They have entrusted the management of the castle, the gardens and the pavilion by architect Wiel Arets to the independent Bonnefanten Hedge House Foundation. This Foundation works in close collaboration with the Bonnefantenmuseum, which is responsible for the programme content of the exhibitions in Wijlre. Jo and Marlies Eyck's estate can rightly be called a 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. Based on a specific philosophy of life, the couple have spent the past years faithfully linking art to the beautiful natural surroundings of the castle at Wijlre. They acquired works from the early periods of artists like Ad Dekkers and Peter Struycken, and continued to follow all the phases of their oeuvre through acquisitions. These were later joined by the more lyrical abstraction, including paintings and sculptures by Ben Akkerman, Rob van Koningsbruggen, Richard Long, Jan Schoonhoven and Carel Visser. But acquisitions were also made of works by artists from the younger generation, such as Jean-Marc Bustamante, Leo Vroegindeweij and Joëlle Tuerlinckx, who were indebted to the body of ideas from the seventies.
