Phoenix by Xu Bing - Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC art exhibit
First, info on the exhibit, then below that info on this historic church:
Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing gathered debris from various construction sites in Beijing to create this monumental project. This feat of engineering and ingenuity, Phoenix is composed of two birds, a male called Feng and a female called Huang. Feng and Huang—together weighing 12 tons and measuring 90 and 100 feet long, respectively. They hang suspended in the Nave, two majestic birds in perpetual flight beneath its celestial ceiling - on display through February 2015 in this historic church.
Located in Manhattan, NYC...The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, an Anglican church, is the 4th largest Christian church in the world and the largest in the United States. The cathedral, designed in 1888 and begun in 1892, remains unfinished, with construction and restoration a continuing process. As a result, it is often nicknamed St. John the Unfinished.
As always, Ed does the wonderful video filming and narrations that you hear. I do all of the editing, research information to include here, etc. and then put it all together to upload here to You Tube.

The bus stopped in front of the cathedral. It is an Anglican cathedral which was built in 1892 and aims to be completed in 2050. Among the sculptures at the front door of the cathedral is the 'Destroyed New York City' built in 1997. The sculptures have sculpted collapsed buildings and high-rise buildings in New York, just like the prophecy of the 9/11 terror that occurred four years later. Is it a coincidence? The cathedral was also damaged by the fire in December 2001. The three-toned goddess door 'Golden Door' created over four years contains the Biblical scenes about the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the end. The rose-shaped window on the blue door is large and beautiful. When I entered the inside of the cathedral, I was holding a mass. At the same time, 8,000 people can give mass. The cathedral will be 180 meters wide and 45 meters high, making it the largest cathedral in the world. The cathedral is famous for its unique exhibitions and events. There is an annual animal prayer service and worship service for those who died in a bicycle accident. Today is an exhibition of various religions. There are various exhibits ranging from the symbol of the Totem faith to the Buddha statue. Is it an effort to understand rather than reject other religions? A curious cathedral with various symbols. I want to find it again when it is completed in 2050.

PEACOCK AT ST. JOHN THE DIVINE
This peacock is a permanent resident of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, Morningside Heights neighborhood. He is a one of two peacocks who lives there, the other is white, and both are males. They are used to having people around him because I went up to him very close to film this. It's either that or this peacock knows what a camera looks like and was posing.
St Patricks Cathedral. New York.
This is a video i took a St. Patricks's Cathedral. New York City in 2001.
The Cathedral of St. Patrick (commonly called St. Patrick's Cathedral) is a decorated Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral church in the United States. It is the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, and a parish church, located on the east side of Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets in midtown Manhattan, New York City, New York, directly across the street from Rockefeller Center and specifically facing the Atlas statue.
The land on which the present cathedral sits, sold by the city's aldermen in 1799 at a quit rent, was purchased at auction for unpaid taxes in November 1828 by Francis Cooper, who conveyed it to the trustees of St Peter's Church in the city that still lay far to the south.[3] The trustees intended it for a Catholic burial ground. The site at 50th Street and Fifth Avenue contained a fine old house, which was then fitted with a chapel of St. Ignatius.[4] The school closed in 1814 and the Jesuits sold the lot to the diocese. In 1813, the diocese gave use of the property to Dom Augustin LeStrange, abbot of a community of Trappists (from the original monastery of La Trappe) who came to America fleeing persecution by French authorities. In addition to a small monastic community, they also looked after some thirty-three orphans. With the downfall of Napoleon in that year, the Trappists returned to France in 1815, abandoning the property. The property at this point was designated for a future cemetery. The neighboring orphanage was maintained by the diocese into the late nineteenth century. Some of the Trappists resettled to Canada and eventually founded St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts.
The Diocese of New York, created in 1808, was made an archdiocese by Pope Pius IX on July 19, 1850. In 1853, Archbishop John Joseph Hughes announced his intention to erect a new cathedral to replace the Old Saint Patrick's Cathedral in downtown Manhattan.[6]
The new cathedral was designed by James Renwick, Jr. in the Gothic Revival style. On August 15, 1858, the cornerstone was laid, just south of the diocese's orphanage. At that time, present-day midtown Manhattan was far north of the populous areas of New York City.
Work was begun in 1858 but was halted during the Civil War and resumed in 1865. The cathedral was completed in 1878 and dedicated on May 25, 1879, its huge proportions dominating the midtown of that time. The archbishop's house and rectory were added from 1882 to 1884, and an adjacent school (no longer in existence) opened in 1882. The towers on the west façade were added in 1888, and an addition on the east, including a Lady chapel, designed by Charles T. Mathews, was begun in 1901. The stained-glass windows in the Lady Chapel were designed and made in Chipping Campden, England by Paul Vincent Woodroffe between 1912 and 1930. The cathedral was renovated between 1927 and 1931 when the great organ was installed and the sanctuary enlarged.
The cathedral and associated buildings were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

St Patrick's Cathedral in New York
A video view of the inside and outside of historical St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan on 51st and Fifth Avenue.
The Cathedral of St. Patrick (commonly called St. Patrick's Cathedral) is a decorated Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral church in the United States and a prominent landmark of New York City.
According to Catholic News Service (CNS) and the Catholic News Agency (CNA), Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan, the incumbent Archbishop of New York, announced before reviewing the city's parade on St. Patrick's Day 2012 that the Cathedral would undergo a massive five-year, three-phase, $175 million renovation because of crumbling bricks, faulty heating, and acid rain and pollution that has eaten away at the Tuckahoe marble of the 135-year-old church. Early donors and grants from the Archdiocese and the Trustees of the Cathedral have already raised $45 million for the first phase, which began in late March. This involves repairing, restoring, and cleaning the soot-covered exterior, and an extensive cleaning of the outside and inside surfaces of the stained glass windows. The Cathedral will remain open during the renovations and work will pause during Masses, according to the Cathedral's rector, Monsignor Robert T. Ritchie

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas
The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas, at 15 East 97th Street, was built in 1902 and soon became an American battleground for conflicts between czarist and Soviet Russians. Now, a decade after the fall of communism and the end of the officially atheistic Soviet state, a new bishop, fresh from Moscow, is planning renovations and modernization.
The Church of St. Nicholas was established in the early 1890's in rented rooms on lower second avenue to serve an increasing number of russian immigrants. By 1899 it had had 300 members, and a movement began to build a new church. The congregation chose an inexpensive uptown location at 97th street off fifth avenue, in an area that was beginning to emerge as a neighborhood of modest flats.
Czar Nicholas II made the first donation to the building fund, 5,000 rubles, then about $2,500. in may 1901, when the cornerstone was laid, it bore a silver plaque praising him. long live the Emperor of Russia and the President of the United States, proclaimed the rev. Alexander Hotovitsky, the minister.
The building was designed according to the characteristic russian model, with seven domes above a dark red brick facade trimmed with limestone and glazed tile in green, blue and yellow. The curving ribs of the domes were of gilt bronze, contrasting with the green painted galvanized iron surface. The building was designed by John Bergesen, who was often referred to as being of russian birth. but on census returns he listed his birthplace sometimes as Finland and other times as Sweden.
In 1904, the crowd outside the church was so huge when bishop Tikhon dedicated a new iconostasis, or altar screen, that the police had to hold them back. At that time a New York Times reporter marveled at the exotic, incense-laden atmosphere: the air was heavy with perfume, and the multitude of sacred candles shedding a dim light throughout the church ombined with the solemn chant of choristers and the psalm singers to produce a quaint splendor seldom surpassed in this city. But Montgomery Schuyler, the critic for the architectural record, was not similarly moved, calling the church building ugly and freakish.
The next year the headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Church moved from San Francisco to New York, and St. Nicholas became the Cathedral of the American Church. That same year, amid rising civil strife. Grand Duke Sergius was assassinated by a bomb in Moscow, rumors of a bombing plot against the cathedral were circulating, and the Czar granted some powers to the duma, a new legislative body.
Czar Nicholas abdicated in 1917 and was murdered the next year. After the communists came to power they began remaking the russian church to fit the goals of an atheist state. Priests and bishops were persecuted and fled Russia, replaced by clerics who were willing to accommodate themselves to the party line. Early in 1920 bolshevik sympathizers disrupted a communion service at St. Nicholas, but were thrown out by the faithful.
In 1923 the rev. John. F. Kedrovsky was sent by Moscow to take over the Cathedral of St. Nicholas - and the $3 million in property controlled by the Russian Orthodox Church. Newspaper accounts indicate that the congregation was generally anti-communist. Father Kedrovsky was carried out of the building and down the steps onto 97th street, kicking and screaming. He later took his case to court.
The police helped the communists enter the rectory in July 1925 and take over St. Nicholas, but it was reoccupied by the anti-communists in August, and pictures of the late Czar were still being sold in the church in December of that year. The police came back in April 1926 when the new nork state appellate court ruled in favor of the communists, and father Kedrovsky was installed again - although he had to send to hartford for robes, because those in the church had been removed by the losing faction.
In the following decades St. Nicholas had an uneasy time as the official church of an officially atheistic country that was to many americans the enemy of the United States.
In the 1920's, a non-Communist church, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, was set up; it now has headquarters in the old George F. Baker mansion at 75 East 93rd Street.
