The Cathedral Church of St. Marie, Sheffield, UK
22nd of Sept. 2013
The Cathedral Church of St Marie is the Roman Catholic cathedral in Sheffield, England. It lies in a slightly hidden location, just off the main shopping street in the city, but signals its presence with a tall spire. It is an especially fine example of an English Roman Catholic Church, with much fine interior decoration. Re-ordering of the Sanctuary following the Second Vatican Council, has been sensitive. There are several particularly notable side altars, as well as statues and painted tiles.
The Reformation
Before the English Reformation the Church of England was part of the Roman Catholic Church, and Sheffield's medieval parish church of St. Peter (now the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul) was the principal Catholic church in the district. In 1534, during the reign of Henry VIII, the Church of England split from Rome, and Catholic worship was outlawed. Until the 18th century, Catholics faced fines, loss of property and social exclusion, and Catholic Priests were hunted down, imprisoned and martyred. The main landowners in Sheffield were the Dukes of Norfolk, and the Shrewsbury Chapel in the now Anglican parish church remained Catholic until 1933. During the reordering of St Mary's in 1970, at the invitation of the Anglican Cathedral, Mass was celebrated on the altar of the Shrewsbury Chapel once again. The Altar still retains its Catholic consecration crosses, and relics, making this possible.[1] Mass was celebrated in a few houses of gentry in Sheffield, including in a house on Fargate that belonged to the Duke of Norfolk, which had a hidden chapel in its roof.[2]
The establishment of the Church of St Marie
Inside St Marie's Cathedral.
The Catholic Emancipation of the late 18th and early 19th century allowed Catholics to worship more openly. Sheffield Catholics bought the ageing house, which stood where the Next shop is today. They built a small chapel in its back garden on a site which is now between the Mortuary and the Blessed Sacrament Chapels. The names of the priests who served Sheffield before the Cathedral was built and the dates of their deaths are on the wall of the Mortuary Chapel. The rest of the land where the Cathedral now stands became a cemetery (Bodies from the cemetery were moved to the new Catholic cemetery at St. Bede's in Rotherham and work on St Marie's began). By 1846 the chapel was too small and the young priest, Fr. Pratt, was keen to build a church for the expanding town. A leading local architect called Matthew Ellison Hadfield designed St Marie's, based on a 14th-century church at Heckington in Lincolnshire.[2] The church was expensively decorated with the aid of generous donations from the Duke of Norfolk, his mother and parishioners. Fr. Pratt died while the church was being built and was buried at St. Bede's. However, a stonemason, who had often heard him say he wanted to be buried in St Marie's, dug up the coffin and re‑buried Fr. Pratt in a tomb he had prepared near the altar. Fr Pratt's body still lies there and a plaque marks the spot, but his effigy has been moved to beneath the altar in the Mortuary chapel.

One minute in cathedral church of St. Marie in Sheffield
I sat in silence in this church and thought I share the moment with the rest of the world, this may be a start to my 1 minute clips.
Sanctus by Sheffield cathedral choir. Church of England
To be honest I didn't feel comfortable here, that day 13th October 2013 liturgy. I don't think '' not welcomed '' represents the reality. '' Not comfortable '' is closer to the truth.
'' Personal Jesus '' sings a good band.
You love / feel it, or you don't.
Or maybe, step by step you go deeper into it.
OK, the anglican cathedral is in renovation; that might alter your experience.
I was late to the service, and since the priest was holding the homily, I waited in a chamber / hall next to the main one. Afterwards I got in. I was trying to spot an empty seat / chair, and when I saw a few, I went there to pay attention, to remain silent to the liturgy. My 1st experience here. A young indian guy by first looks, at the beginning of the aisle was surprised / annoyed I enter that line, and said something like is occupied... later I was to notice some papers / leaflets with a mention the kids were gone to the Bible study / children part of the Sunday service.
They did not come back, so I can apologise for taking their seat or to move somewhere else. The place now is narrower due to renovation. They came back at the end of the service but waited on a different part of the church...
Even this movie was stopped by that guy's intervention, speaking: not allowed to take videos in here...
The main priest was always reading / looking on the papers. Whatever the reading: singing songs, prayers ( The Creed and even the short one Our Father!!! ). It felt like a cheap circus.
Am I too judgemental? Maybe...
God looks inside people's hearts... maybe I stop at the appearances?!?! Am I? Really?
All the priests or the clergy were freshly shaved... nice shoes... expensive everything... maybe this is the Western Hemisphere opulence. I felt no trace of humbleness or holiness on them, experiencing the service.
OK, the Eastern Orthodoxy monasteries / monks don't count into the comparison. These are city clergymen. Fresh. Political correct image vs. monks pale shivers.
Memento mori... what? Who? Where?
Even in the Eastern Ortodoxy, the town priests have reddish cheeks. Big bellys. Not all of them, of course... maybe the average!
I had the repugnance to witness a liturgy officiated by a woman, to a Church of England church in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK. The one in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire I escaped by not being present... It doesn't matter ( really? ) she dropped the holy bread on the floor. It remains holy, stil. The stupid Western smile is not always OK... when you have no answers, just smile. Fake. Stupid. Hypocrite.
Going back to this Cathedral... after the liturgy, of course I met nice people. Even from the clergy. Good topics to discuss. Experienced people.
( Even one may say it's heresy )
After a few days I got to see the chubby main priest in the town centre, very close to the cathedral, walking towards it... in the steps walking I noticed red socks with fancy, expensive shoes. Oh my God... it's too much for me. I'm sorry... yes, everybody is free to do / wear everything they like / have / want... maybe as a priest there are some common sense restrictions... Or maybe, it's only me!

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Sheffield name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city of Sheffield has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.
In the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Known as the Steel City, many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893.
The city has a long sporting heritage, and is home to the world's oldest football club, Sheffield F.C. Games between the two professional clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, are known as the Steel City derby. The city is also home to the World Snooker Championship.

4th Sunday of Advent A
The Maiden is with child
and will soon give birth to a son
whom she will call Immanuel, '' God is with us '' ( Is 7:14 )
First Reading ( Isaiah 7:10-14 )
Once again the Lord spoke to Ahaz and said, '' Ask the Lord your God for a sign for yourself coming either from the depths of Sheol or from the heights above.'' '' No '', Ahaz answered '' I will not put the Lord to the test. '' Then he said: '' Listen now, House of David: are you not satisfied with trying the patience of men without trying the patience of my God, too? The Lord himself, therefore, will give you a sign. It is this: the maiden is with child and will soon give birth to a son whom she will call Immanuel, a name which means ' God-is-with-us ' . ''
Second Reading ( Romans 1:1-7 )
From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus who has been called to be an apostle, and specially chosen to preach the Good News that God promised long ago through his prophets in the scriptures.
This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took, was a descendant of David: it is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, in the order of the spirit, the spirit of holiness that was in him, was proclaimed Son of God in all his power through his ressurection from the dead. Through him we received grace and our apostolic mission to preach the obedience of faith to all pagan nations in honour of his name. You are one of these nations, and by his call belong to Jesus Christ. To you all, then, who are God's beloved in Rome, called to be saints, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send grace and peace.
Gospel ( Matthew 1:18-25 )
This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, '' Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins. '' Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Emmanuel, a name which means '' God-is-with-us ''. When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took his wife to his home.
Meditation
In the history of Israel, the exodus event shaped the story of creation. In the formation of the gospels, the memory of Christ's death and rising shaped the accounts of his birth and infancy. Much more than stories about a precocious child with remarkable relatives, the infancy narratives are the clear expression of the early Church's belief that, from the first moment of Jesus' conception, God was at work in him.
In relating the annunciation to Joseph, Matthew does not intend to consider the psychological reactions of his character. He simply wishes to answer the question, '' Who is the Messiah? '' For Matthew, Jesus, '' who will save his people from their sins, '' is the ultimate inheritor of Israel, and it is Joseph who introduces him into the royal line of David.
Informed from the beginning about the impending birth, Joseph believed at first that he must remove himself from this mystery in which he thought he would have no role to play. Then God intervened. Indeed, the child whom Mary carried '' comes from the Holy Spirit. '' But it is up to Joseph to assure Jesus' legal status by accepting him as his own son and giving him his name. It is necessary that through Joseph the house of David recognize in this son '' God with us '' ( Isaiah 7:14 )
We readily designate birth '' a joyous event ''. What should be said about the waiting for this child in which Jospeh plays a humble but indispensable role? The question here is not the history of one family among others, but the history of '' God-with-us '', the history of Salvation.
