Cathedral Falls Gauley Bridge Waterfall West Virginia
June of 2012 I visited Cathedral Falls. One of the tallest and most amazing waterfalls I have ever seen.
Gauley Bridge, West Virginia
The name Gauley Bridge dates from the early 1820s when a wooden covered bridge was built to carry the James River & Kanawha Turnpike across the Gauley River. Because it commanded entry into the Kanawha Valley, the village that sprang up was of strategic significance during the Civil War.
In and around Gauley Bridge is home of some awesome West Virginia water views.
“Kanawha Falls”, the largest waterfall in West Virginia, is an important natural landmark. The falls are located on U.S. 60 in Fayette County, just downstream from Gauley Bridge, where the New and Gauley rivers converge to create the Kanawha River. The community of Kanawha Falls is downstream from the falls on the east bank, with Glen Ferris located at the falls on the west bank.
Water drops more than 20 feet at the falls, which cross the Kanawha River in an irregular line. This forms a formidable natural barrier, establishing the boundary between the New River and Kanawha River ecological systems. The falls prevent the upstream movement of fish, with many fewer species in the multi state river basin above the falls.
The falls were a popular stopping place on the James River & Kanawha Turnpike. Aaron Stockton settled there about 1812, and by the 1830s had opened an inn to accommodate this trade. His inn, now called Glen Ferris Inn and still open for business, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Since about 1900 the falls have been augmented by a low dam along the crest. Hydroelectric power has been generated there for more than a century by the Union Carbide company and its predecessors and successors, the electricity used mainly in the production of metal alloys at nearby company facilities. A thriving community developed around these industrial activities in the early decades of the 20th century. The shallow lake created by the dam and falls extends upstream to Gauley Bridge, combining with the mountain setting to create one of the most picturesque views in West Virginia.
About a mile east of Gauley Bridge you’ll find Cane Branch, a small tributary of the New River. Here, it makes a dramatic final plunge out of the mountains on its way to the river. This is Cathedral Falls and it is one of the most scenic and easy to access waterfalls in southern West Virginia.
Cathedral Falls is a beautiful 60+ foot waterfall on Cane Branch. It cascades down a narrow canyon and lands right beside US Rt 60. This creek begins on Gauley Mountain and makes a short but exciting trip to the New River. It actually drops nearly 100 feet over a series of Upper Nuttall sandstone ledges, but the final 60 feet of drops are the ones you can see from the roadside park.
Where is it?
Cathedral Falls is located just off of US Rt. 60 about a mile east of the town of Gauley Bridge. This is the Scenic Byway that travels from Charleston to the West Virginia state line east of White Sulphur Springs.
The trip is approximately 40 minutes from Charleston going east on Rt. 60 or 20 minutes from Ansted going west on Rt 60. If you are coming from Fayetteville, take Rt. 16 west to route 60. This trip will take about 20 minutes. For the technology junkies who love to use GPS, the coordinates for Cathedral Falls are 38.15444N by 81.1788W.
Why You Should Go
There’s a magic quality to water, whether it’s sitting motionless or flowing through a stream. Cathedral Falls is a special place to visit if you’re traveling around southern West Virginia. The sounds of the water falling over the rocks can help you reconnect with nature and forget about your worries for awhile.
And Cathedral Falls is also a wonderful spot for photographs. Tucked away in its own little canyon, you’ll have a hard time taking a bad picture here. You can go to Cathedral Falls many times and your photos will always be different. The water flow changes all the time.
And be sure to pack a picnic lunch; there’s no prettier spot to enjoy a meal. The roadside park has a couple of tables, and with a little exploring you can see more of the falls than just what you can view from the road.
No matter why you go, just remember to take time to enjoy the beauty that is southern West Virginia.
And while you’re in the area you might as well stop and look at the Bus House in the River resting on a rock formation.

Cathedral Falls in Gualey Bridge, WV
08.13.09 - One of the falls we saw traveling The Midland Trail (Route 60) from Huntington, WV towards VA. It's over 100 ft high, located right on Route 60 set into a U-shaped cove carved in the mountain. Notice when I show the wall that there is a set of three floodlights high up on the mountain. Apparently they light the falls at night! How pretty that must also look. There was a good flow of water that day and how I wished I could go all the way back to the falls where the young couple and their kids were playing. It was very rough, rocky terrain, however. I only climbed half way back.

Scenic Byways ~ Midland Trail
Recently my cousin and I had a few days free so we decided to take a road trip to visit family in KY. One of our goals was to drive only designated National Scenic Byways as much as we possibly could so we drove the Midland Trail, Route 60, beginning at White Sulpher Springs, WV and ending at Louisville, Ky. This video contains only a few of the many scenic stops we made along the way. If you'd like to find the scenic byways in your area search byways.org and take time to enjoy the ride!

One of the most undervalued regions of the United States. Southern West Virginia has so much to offer for the explorer/hiker/caver etc.
Kanawha Falls & HydroPlant - Gauley Bridge, WV
08.12.09 - Completed in 1901, it exploited the 8 ft natural falls to drive the first hydroelectric power station in Gauley Bridge, WV. This area is beautiful. There are falls all over here. Way in the back behind these falls you see up front and off to the sides. Just all over. Really pretty. Unfortunately, the sun only peeked through a couple of times.

Cathedral Falls and Hawks Nest State Park, West Virginia - Hangin' With the Cousins II
Still on the way to the New River Gorge Bridge, we stopped at Cathedral Falls, outside of Gauley Bridge, and Hawks Nest State Park, outside of Ansted, West Virginia. Both are right off U.S. Hwy 60, so you don't have to go out of the way to see them. Cathedral Falls was very active, since it had rained pretty hard the day before. It's an awesome place to stop off and play at for a bit. The viewing area at Hawks Nest was also a nice place to make a short stop and see the sights. On the way is the famous Mystery Hole, but, sadly, it was closed (it was the Monday between Christmas and New Year's). We'll catch it another time!
Please Help! Any and ALL Help Is Greatly Appreciated!
Thank you very much for taking the time to watch this video.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
All donations will directly go to the Allen Family to help with relocation and personal necessities.
Many more familes in this area of West Virginia ,in particular, have been affected by the recent floods. At least 20 homes in my small town of Camden-on-Gauley, WV, will either have to relocate or go through the grueling challenge of cleaning up their homes, if it is recoverable. So if you can, please donate to the American Red Cross if you feel that is the better route for you. This is a serious situation and many have the issues of not being financially stable for disasters such as this.
Many towns in West Virginia has been affected and is also in tremendous need of help. Yes, FEMA will be helping all those in need but with so many families in need, there will not be enough monetary relief to help everyone to the fullest extent.
THANK YOU to those that share this video and get the word out about this situation in particular, as well as the others out there in need. Thank you for donating if you can. If you can't, that is completely understandable. All comments and uplifting words will be related to the family as I will be in contact with them continuously. Thank you again so very much.
Sincerely,
Chris (theREDMEISTER304)

Cathedral Falls, Wv 2-20-16
Cathedral Falls is located on Cane Branch, 2 miles southeast of Gauley Bridge, in Fayette County, West Virginia. The creek drops nearly one hundred feet before it flows into the New River. A 60+ foot drop is visible from this roadside park along Route 60. (the Midland Trail Scenic Highway) Warning to all waterfall fans, I would consider this to probably be a seasonal waterfall. While it flows year round, sometimes it's just a trickle and is much more impressive in late winter and spring. Thank you for watching!
