Cathedral Valley Road Trip in Capital Reef
Our road trip this time takes you into the Cathedral Valley area of Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. See the full story at backroadswest.com/blog/cathedral-valley
The Temples of Cathedral Valley at Capitol Reef National Park, Utah
Just as we reached the last stop of our scenic drive through Cathedral Valley the winds picked up and the skies darkened. The smaller of the monoliths, the Temple of the Moon had a dust devil dancing around it. The tall Temple of the Sun offered little relief from the quickly chilling air. The only signs of life in this area were from the numerous coyote and mountain lion tracks.
Cathedral Valley Backcountry Scenery in Capitol Reef Nat'l Park, Utah
An isolated backcountry roadway with a few challenges and varying terrain. The adventure begins with driving through a river, then the road meanders through rainbow colored sand dunes until you enter the Waterpocket Fold and drive among sandstone cliffs and monoliths with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Filmed 11-30-12.

Cathedral Valley Overlook, Capitol Reef National Park in Utah
Located in the southernmost part of the San Rafael Swell is Capitol Reef National Park. Cathedral Valley offers a half day's worth of scenic driving and a good opportunity to take a break from the vigorous hiking needed for most of the area. The various ages of the rock are reflected by their horizontal stripes and colors, with their foundation formed over 270 million years ago.

Amazing! Cathedral Valley is a large area in the northern part of Capitol Reef National Park. The drive to Cathedral valley is bumpy and requires a vehicle with high clearance. It's so, so~ remote, we didn't see any other people and vehicles for hours. It's so awesome sight.
Cathedral Valley Loop Offroad Trail - Utah
Cathedral Valley Scenic Backway takes you into the heart of the Cathedral District, a land filled with natural wonder. A title like that is something you think you should be hearing in Paris, but instead, you are right next to Capitol Reef National Park, a wonder in its own right. With prominent natural landmarks named Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon, and Jericho Wall you always question if the beauty is overhyped. It is not. For the off-road crowd, this trail is must do for simply for the visual stimulating factor of it. There will not be any challenging wheeling, but with over 57 miles of sensory overload - you have to do it.

Southwest 2012 - Cathedral Valley
Part of footage from 2012 trip to Colorado and Utah. This segment shows highlights from the drive from I-70 to the Cathedral Valley via baker Ranch Road. The road was quite rough at the end of September 2012 and many parts were washed out. This should not be attempted in anything but a high clearance vehicle until the road is repaired.
Cathedral Valley Utah Overlanding Trip | Part 1
Cathedral Valley has been a bucket list place to visit for a very long time. I mapped a route from Goblin Valley to Cathedral Valley for a 2 night overland trip.
We spent the night just outside of Goblin Valley before hitting Wild Horse Canyon Road for an incredible off-road trip.

Capitol Reef National Park - Part 1, Utah 2013 #12
Part 1: Capitol Reef encompasses the Waterpocket Fold, a warp in the earth's crust that is 65 million years old and 100 miles long. The area was named for a line of white domes and cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, each of which looks somewhat like the United States Capitol building, and the waterpocket fold / barrier reef like appearance as viewed from the air. Capitol Gorge was the former UT Rt 24 until 1962, and became a US National Park in 1971.

Rescue of Lucky LeAw in the middle of Cathedral Valley Loop Off Road - Utah LeAw in the USA //Ep.38
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 38th episode, we will rescue Lucky LeAw, our old vintage 1990 Ford F-250 4x4 truck camper, from the middle of the Cathedral Valley Loop Off Road into the Capitol Reef National Park in Utah, since the engine broke down. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
The Cathedral Valley District of Capitol Reef National Park is open all year. Vehicles with high ground clearance, even those without four wheel drive, can usually negotiate the roads without difficulty. However, road conditions can vary greatly depending on recent weather conditions. Spring and summer rains and winter snows can leave the roads muddy, washed out, and impassable to the best high-clearance four wheel drive vehicle, so check at the visitor center for current road and weather conditions before visiting Cathedral Valley.
Foot and vehicle travel in the Cathedral Valley area is light, so be prepared for the unexpected. If you have problems, help may not arrive for hours or even days, depending on the time of year. Carry plenty of water, food, gas, adequate clothing, a shovel, and emergency supplies. Cool or cold temperatures will accompany sudden storms or an unexpected night out in the backcountry. Daytime temperatures in the summer may reach the upper 90s°F (30s °C) and winter highs may stay below freezing, so prepare accordingly. You are responsible for your own safety.
THE CATHEDRAL VALLEY LOOP TOUR
Most visitors to Cathedral Valley drive the 57.6 mile (92.7 km) loop clockwise, beginning on the Hartnet Road located 11.7 miles (18.8 km) east of the visitor center on Highway 24 and continuing on that for 27.8 miles (44.7 km) to Hartnet Junction. Turn right (north) onto Cathedral Road and driving 29.9 miles (48.0 km) back to Highway 24 will complete the loop. There are many side trips and hiking opportunities along the way.
The south end of the Hartnet Road near Highway 24 requires fording the Fremont River; there is no bridge over the river. Do not attempt to cross the river during floods or other periods of high water. Ask at the visitor center about river ford conditions or call 435-425-3791. The ford has a hard packed, rocky bottom and water levels are normally a foot or less deep. The access road to the River Ford crosses private land. Please honor the posted no trespassing signs along the road near the ford by not parking off-road or camping in the vicinity.

Driving scenic dirt road to Cathedral Valley, Capitol Reef National Park
Amazing views driving on desolate dirt road on our way to Cathedral Valley, Capitol Reef National Park. The dirt road here is composed mainly of grey, white, and purple shales of the Upper Triassic Chinle formation, primarily fluvial (river) and lacustrine (lake) deposits. Locally, it is referred to as the Bentonite Beds which can be treacherous in the rain because of extreme swelling of the clay minerals, making it very sticky and slippery. Wingate sandstone forms the cliffs over the Chinle Fm. shales which are underalin by redbeds of the Moenkopi Fm. (all Triassic).
