This late Gothic basilica is on the site of an earlier St. Bavo church mentioned as early as 1245. According to its official web site, the choir was built in 1370-1400 by Brecht Enge of Nivelles made in brick Gothic with economical use of sandstone while the transept was added in the mid-15th century in the style of the classic Brabant Gothic. The construction of the nave was performed by master Evert Rail Water in 2 phases in the second half of the 15th century. The original crossing tower was a 16th century design. The Cathedral of Saint Bavo is a religious building in Haarlem, the Netherlands, built by the Catholics from 1895 to 1930 to replace the former waterstaatskerk in the Jansstraat called the St. Joseph. That church was itself a replacement for the Sint-Bavokerk, that had been converted to Protestantism from Catholicism in 1578. The Cathedral of Saint Bavo now serves as the main cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam. Within the Cathedral, the former sacristy has been converted into a small museum (schatkamer) containing historical artefacts from Haarlem's Catholic past.

Haarlem (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦaːrlɛm]; predecessor of Harlem in the English language) is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland and is situated at the northern edge of the Randstad, one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe. Haarlem had a population of 159,556 in 2017.
Haarlem was granted city status or stadsrechten in 1245, although the first city walls were not built until 1270. The modern city encompasses the former municipality of Schoten as well as parts that previously belonged to Bloemendaal and Heemstede. Apart from the city, the municipality of Haarlem also includes the western part of the village of Spaarndam. Newer sections of Spaarndam lie within the neighbouring municipality of Haarlemmermeer.

With its ancient buildings, cobbled streets and winding waterways, the medieval city of Haarlem is one of the most photogenic destinations in the Netherlands. Easily reachable by train (just fifteen minutes from Amsterdam Central Station) Haarlem is often referred to as a scaled-down version of its more famous neighbour. But to think of it in such terms does a disservice to a city that beats with its own vibrant pulse and overflows with a rich history, epoch-spanning architecture and a thriving cultural scene all of its own.

In 1658, Peter Stuyvesant, the Director-General of the Dutch colony of Nieuw Nederland (New Netherland), founded the settlement of Nieuw Haarlem in the northern part of Manhattan Island as an outpost of Nieuw Amsterdam (New Amsterdam) at the southern tip of the island. After the English capture of New Netherland in 1664, the new English colonial administration renamed both the colony and its principal city New York, but left the name of Haarlem more or less unchanged. The spelling changed to Harlem in keeping with contemporary English usage, and the district grew (as part of the borough of Manhattan) into the vibrant centre of African American culture in New York City and the United States generally by the 20th century.

Saint Bavo Cathedral
Haarlem’s impressive gothic St. Bavo’s Cathedral was built in the 14th-15th centuries, in the so-called Kunstgotiek (“Coast Gothic”) style. A treasure chamber containing religous artifacts is located in St Bavo’s cathedral’s annexe.

The #1 reason is the organ, the largest in the world and once played by 10 year old Mozart.

St. Bavo Catholic Cathedral
The 'other' St Bavo in Haarlem - the Catholic Cathedral - is a rambling, disjointed, wonderful, Victorian basilica on the Leidsevaart canal, south-west of the city centre. Its green, copper dome is clearly visible from the busy Tempelierstraat.
Built mainly in brick, it dates from the early 20th century and has many Art Deco features. The main entrance side looks rather ordinary but a stroll round the perimeter reveals strange gargoyles and a cascade of towers seemingly heaped one on top of the other. These lead up to the magnificent green dome which is flanked by the two main towers. The cathedral is impressive during the day but spectacular at night when huge spotlights are trained on it and the illuminated dome shines in the night sky.
The church has a great musical tradition: it has its own prestigious Cathedral choir, 'hand-reared' at a nearby choir school. They regularly tour abroad and also sing on most Catholic feastdays, with accompaniment from the mighty cathedral pipe-organ. During the summer season, free organ recitals are given.
A unique collection of antique religious objects can be found in the Treasury, including chalices, altar books and clothing
