Uspenski Cathedral (Finnish: Uspenskin katedraali, Swedish: Uspenskij-katedralen, Russian: Успенский собор, Uspenskij sobor) is an Eastern Orthodox
cathedral in Helsinki, Finland, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary). Its name comes from the Old Church Slavonic word uspenie,
which denotes the Dormition. Designed by the Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev (1808–1862). The cathedral was built after his death in 1862–1868.
The crypt chapel of the cathedral is named after the holy Alexander Hotovitzky, who served as vicar of the Orthodox parish of Helsinki 1914–1917.
The Cathedral is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking the city. On the back of the cathedral, there is a plaque commemorating
Russian Emperor Alexander II, who was the sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Finland during the cathedral's construction. Main cathedral of the Finnish
Orthodox Church in the diocese of Helsinki, Uspenski Cathedral is claimed to be the largest orthodox church in Western Europe.
In 2006, about 516,500 tourists visited the church. Admission to the Cathedral is free of charge. In winter, the Cathedral is closed on Mondays.

Christmas in Helsinki & Turku, visiting the Art Chapel and SAUNA!! | Finland Roadtrip Part 1
We've arrived in Helsinki, Finland on the 30th November with the first snow of the season! It's freezing outside and the Christmas markets are opening up! Time to get our Christmas cheer on!
Helsinki is well decorated but as a city not as attractive with visible Russian influences in the architecture. Be prepared for expensive food & drinks!
We set off early in the morning to Turku (2 hour drive from Helsinki) where we first pass by Kylamaki, which is a representation of an 'old' village (dating back to 1920). Definitely great in Summer, not so in Winter when everything is closed and no one is there. Apparently in Summer they put on displays.
Just before entering Turku we are greeted by Pig Duck. In Turku, we see the Cathedral and visit a Christmas market where the locals put on a display:
On our way to our first Airbnb, we stop at the St. Henry's Ecumenical Art Chapel. This is a beautiful wooden church which looks magnificent from the inside!
Upon arriving at our Airbnb, we meet our host Matti who was very welcoming and helped us warm up the sauna and explained the ins and outs of the cosy little place! It was a night to never forget!
