St. Casimir's in Brockton celebrates 110th anniversary

BROCKTON — Eighty-year-old Ann Motekaitis slowly walked down the front stairs of St. Casimir Catholic Church on Sawtell Avenue on Sunday.
Motekaitis was married in the church and celebrated her 55th anniversary there.
Sunday morning, she was among dozens of parishioners who attended a special Mass to celebrate the 110th anniversary of St. Casimir, which is slated to close on June 29.
It's heartbreaking to think that, if the church is closing, you can never come in here again, Motekaitis said.
As the melodic sound of Lithuanian and English hymns filled the air during the Mass, several parishioners knelt in the pews and made the sign of the Cross. Sunlight streamed through the church's multicolored stained glass windows.
For Diane Nevirauskas, whose children attended the parish school, which closed last year, Sunday's Mass was an emotional time.
It's just a hard thing to see it closing down. It's a beautiful church, said Nevirauskas, 51, of Brockton.
St. Casimir dates back to 1898, a parish established by Lithuanian immigrants, and boasts a rich history of faith and culture. Originally named St. Rocco, the church is the founding home of the national Knights of Lithuania.
Several old, black-and-white photos of parishioners were on display in the church basement following the Mass, where parishioners gathered for lunch.
John Drusinskas, chairman of the Friends of St. Casimir Parish, said parishioners have not yet received a decree of suppression, which is an official document stating that the church is closed, from the Archdiocese of Boston.
That document would state where the church finances, liquid assets and church artifacts would go, Drusinskas said.
Parishioners need to receive the document within 10 days of the church closing date, and then they have 10 days to respond, he said.
Several parishioners said they did not know where they would attend church after St. Casimir closes.
Outside, on the church lawn, signs of their opposition to the closure could be seen.
Rose Rozen of Brockton, a lifelong parishioner who lives near the church and walks to Mass, planted flowers to simulate prayer beads around a white Cross.
She also has helped erect several crosses on the church's Hill of Crosses, which emulates a pilgrimage site in Lithuania. Written on one cross was St. Casimir, Pray for us!
It's sort of a little bit of a silent protest so that they would let us at least save our church, and that's what we're hoping for, Rozen, 73, said.
If the St. Casimir property does not function as a church, Rozen hopes it could remain a Lithuanian community center so that it will not be destroyed.
She said if the church goes, the parish goes.
That's my greatest sorrow right now, Rozen said, fighting back tears.

Latvians react to Pope Francis' visit to their Baltic nation
(24 Sep 2018) A few dozen people gathered at a Riga park on Monday to watch a large screen broadcasting a prayer service with Pope Francis, who arrived in Latvia earlier in the day.
On the third day of his Baltic pilgrimage, Francis attended an ecumenical prayer service in the Latvian capital's Lutheran cathedral before heading to the Catholic shrine at Aglona, near Latvia's eastern border with Russia.
Worshippers in the capital followed the service as it was displayed on outdoor screens outside the cathedral.
The main aim of the Pope's visit is to recognise the Baltic states' suffering under Soviet and Nazi occupation and to encourage the Christian faith that endured there.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Orthodox Christian pilgrims representing many branches of the Church filled the narrow streets of Jerusalem''s Old City on Good Friday.
They gathered in preparation for the noontime procession retracing the route that Jesus followed on his way to the crucifixion.
The processions will be followed by an overnight vigil at the traditional site of Christ''s crucifixion and burial.
On Saturday there will be the ancient ceremony of the holy fire, in which a candle said to have been miraculously ignited is passed among worshippers.
Orthodox churches use a different calendar to the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, which celebrated Easter a week earlier.

Jėzau, prisimink mane / Jesus, Remember Me - In paradisum
On January 23, 2011, the Dainava Lithuanian Chorale presented a concert of sacred music in remembrance of those who died for Lithuania's freedom at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Chicago. This concert, entitled Aukos Dvasia (The Spirit of Sacrifice), was held on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the killings of unarmed civilians by the Soviets at the Vilnius TV Tower on January 13th, 1991.
In this interpolation of the Gregorian chant In Paradisum (Into Heaven) and the simple prayer by French composer Jacques Berthier Jesus, Remember Me (1978), a clear message of eternal rest resonates despite the time of their composition: Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom, sings the choir, while soloists Marius and Saulius Polikaitis respond, May the angels lead you into paradise. May the martyrs receive you in your coming. And may they guide you into the holy city, Jerusalem. May the choirs of angels receive you and with Lazarus, once poor, may you have eternal rest.
The Dainava Lithuanian Chorale was established in 1950 and has upheld a tradition of celebrating Lithuania's culture through song. The chorale performs annually and includes both secular and non-secular compositions in its repertoire.
