We visit the magnificent 800-year-old Reims cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece where the Kings of France were crowned, before some free time perhaps to wander around this delightful city with its grand squares and elegant shopping arcades.
Reims is famous for two very important things. It is the capital of the Champagne Region and its center is marked by the cathedral of coronations. The city is named for Saint Rémi, the Bishop of Reims, who in the year 498 baptized Clovis, the King of the Franks, in an act that gave birth to the French Nation. Starting in 815 Reims' famous Cathédrale Notre-Dame was the location of the French King's coronations until 1825.
It is considered by many to be the most perfect Gothic church in the world. It was almost completely destroyed in the battles of World War I, but remained almost untouched in WWII, and has since been completely restored. From Louis VII to Charles X, the kings of France made it a point of honor to be crowned in the city where the history of the country really began.
Beneath the town and its suburbs, there are endless caves for champagne. Champagne Cellars of Reims include Maison de Pommery, Maxims, Mumm, Piper-Heidsieck, Ruinart, Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin.

A look inside (in my opinion) one of the worlds grandest Cathedrals.
The shear size of the place is just awe inspiring. With it's gothic statues on both the inside and the outside, the wonderful dominant organ to the huge pillars, this place is a truly marvelous.
Notre-Dame de Reims (Our Lady of Rheims) is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Reims, where the kings of France were once crowned.
It replaces an older church, destroyed by a fire in 1211, which was built on the site of the basilica where Clovis was baptized by Saint Remi, bishop of Reims, in AD 496. That original structure had been erected on the site of the Roman baths.
As the cathedral it remains the seat of the Archdiocese of Reims.
The inside of cathedral is 138.75 m (about 455 ft) long, 30 m (approx. 98 feet) wide in the nave, and 38 m (about 125 feet) high in the centre. It comprises a nave with aisles, transepts with aisles, a choir with double aisles, and an apse with ambulatory and radiating chapels. It has interesting stained glass ranging from the 13th to the 20th century. The rose window over the main portal and the gallery beneath are of rare magnificence.

La cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims est une cathédrale catholique romaine située à Reims, en Champagne-Ardenne. Sa construction a commencé au début du XIIIe siècle, elle est donc postérieure à Notre-Dame de Paris et Notre-Dame de Chartres, mais antérieure aux cathédrales Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, Notre-Dame d'Amiens et à celle de Beauvais.
Consacrée à la Vierge Marie, la cathédrale a été achevée au XIVe siècle.
Il s'agit de l'une des réalisations majeures de l'art gothique en France, tant pour son architecture que pour sa statuaire qui ne compte pas moins de 2 303 statues. Elle est inscrite, à ce titre, au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 1991. Haut lieu du tourisme champenois, elle accueille environ 1 500 000 visiteurs par an.
Selon Flodoard, saint Nicaise -- évêque de Reims -- fonde la première cathédrale rémoise au début du Ve siècle, probablement vers 401, sur d'anciens thermes gallo-romains.C'est devant la porte de sa cathédrale, déjà dédiée à la Vierge Marie, que saint Nicaise est décapité par les Vandales3 en 407 ou par les Huns en 451.
L'édifice mesure alors environ 20 m sur 55m. C'est là que se déroule le baptême de Clovis, par l'évêque Remi de Reims, un 25 décembre. L'année de cette célébration est sujette à débat et est située entre 496 et 499.
En 816, Louis le Pieux est le premier monarque français à être couronné à Reims, par le pape Étienne IV.
À partir de 976, l'évêque Adalbéron agrandit et illumine la cathédrale carolingienne. Au milieu XIIe siècle, l'archevêque Samson fait démolir la façade ainsi que sa tour dans le but d'ériger une nouvelle façade, encadrée de deux tours, probablement sur le modèle de la basilique Saint-Denis.
Les Annales de saint Nicaise rapportent qu'en 1210 « l'église de Reims a brûlé en la fête Saint-Jean-devant-la-Porte-latine », le 6 mai, le même jour qu'une éclipse de lune. Cependant, l'unique éclipse visible à Reims en ce début de XIIIe siècle est datée par Anne Prache du 28 février 1207. On sait toutefois que l'archevêque Albéric de Humbert pose la première pierre d'une nouvelle cathédrale le 6 mai 1211, l'incendie ayant détruit l'édifice précédent.
Quatre architectes se succèdent sur le chantier dont le gros œuvre est achevé en 1275 : Jean d'Orbais, Jean-le-Loup, Gaucher de Reims et Bernard de Soissons.
Le 24 juillet 1481, un nouvel incendie, né de la négligence d'ouvriers travaillant à la toiture de l'édifice, prend dans les combles de la cathédrale. Il détruit la charpente, puis le grand clocher central ainsi que les galeries à la base du toit. Le plomb coulant de la toiture achève de détériorer le monument. Le chantier reprend néanmoins rapidement. Les rois Charles VIII puis Louis XII, sacrés dans la cathédrale, apportent un soutien financier à la reconstruction, à la différence de leur prédécesseur Louis XI.
Le prestige de la sainte Ampoule et la puissance politique des archevêques de Reims aboutissent à partir d'Henri Ier (1027) à fixer définitivement le lieu du sacre à Reims. Trente rois de France se sont fait sacrer dans la cité rémoise. Seulement sept n'ont pas été sacrés ici.
Très abimées sous la révolution, la cathédrale est restaurée en 1860 par Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.
En 1914, la cathédrale est bombardée par les Allemands et reçoit 288 obus.
Elle est restaurée à partir de 1919 avec l'aide de mécènes notamment américains parmi lesquels la famille Rockfeller.

There has been a church on the site since 401 A.D., and the current cathedral dates from the early 13th century. 25 French kings have been coronated in the cathedral, including Charles VII, due to the efforts of Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc). During Reims's 1051 days of shelling in World War I, the cathedral's roof collapsed, its stained glass windows were shattered, and it suffered serious masonry damage. Some of the stained glass was pieced back together shard-by-shard. You can still see some of the damage.

Reims Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Reims, France, built in the High Gothic style. The cathedral replaced an older church, destroyed by fire in 1211, that was built on the site of the basilica where Clovis I was baptized by Saint Remi, bishop of Reims in 496. That original structure had itself been erected on the site of some Roman baths. The seat of the Archdiocese of Reims, the cathedral was where the kings of France were crowned. The cathedral, a major tourist destination, receives about one million visitors annually.
According to Flodoard, Saint Nicasius founded the first church on the site of the current cathedral at the beginning of the 5th century, probably in 401, on the site of a Gallo-Roman bath. The site is not far from the basilica built by Bishop Betause, where Saint Nicasius would be martyred by beheading either by the Vandals in 407 or by the Huns in 451. The dedication of the church to the Virgin Mary suggests that the latter of the two dates is the correct one, given that the first church to be named after the Virgin Mary was the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in the 430s. This building, measuring approximately 20 m (66 ft) by 55 m (180 ft), would be where Clovis, King of the Franks, would be baptized by Saint Remigius on Christmas Day some time between 496 and 499.
The prestige of the Holy Ampulla and the political power of the Archbishop of Reims resulted from King Henry I of France, who was crowned here in 1027 and permanently established Reims Cathedral as the location of the coronation of the French monarch. All future Kings of France with the exception of seven[d] would be crowned at Reims. Of particular importance is the coronation of Charles VII in 1429 as it marked the reversal of the course of the Hundred Years' War, thanks in large part to the tenacity of Joan of Arc. Today, she is memorialized at Reims Cathedral with two statues: an equestrian statue outside the church and another within the church.
The cathedral's exterior glorifies royalty. In the center of the front facade and above the rose window is the Gallery of Kings, composed of 56 statues with a height of 4.5 meters (15 ft), with Clovis I in the center mid-baptism, Clotilde to his right, and Saint Remigius to his left. The three portals are laden with statues and statuettes; among European cathedrals, only Chartres has more sculpted figures. The central portal, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is surmounted by a rose window framed in an arch itself decorated with statuary, in place of the usual sculptured tympanum. The gallery of the kings above shows the baptism of Clovis in the centre flanked by statues of his successors.
In 2011, the city of Reims celebrated the cathedral's 800th anniversary. The celebrations ran from 6 May to 23 October. Concerts, street performances, exhibitions, conferences, and a series of evening light shows highlighted the cathedral and its 800th anniversary. In addition, six new stained glass windows designed by Imi Knoebel, a German artist, were inaugurated on June 25, 2011. The six windows cover an area of 128 square meters (1,380 sq ft) and are positioned on both sides of the Chagall windows in the apse of the cathedral.

Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Reims ( Reims - France ) is another beautiful example of Europe's cathedrals. Just gorgeous. It was very interesting to read of all the restoration work throughout the years. Much of the stained glass was damaged in wartime and the care and thought the artists put into renovations was wonderful. It shows that they really tried to keep the spirit of the construction while updating.

Dressées à plus de 80m de haut, les tours de Notre-Dame dominent le centre de Reims. Bâtie au XIIe siècle, cette cathédrale est un véritable chef d’œuvre d’art gothique. Et c’est ici que la plupart des rois de France furent sacrés.
En 2011, on a fêté le 800e anniversaire de Notre-Dame de Reims. Un événement célébré en grandes pompes pour cette cathédrale qui a joué un rôle primordial dans l’Histoire de France. Trente-trois souverains ont en effet été sacrés ici, depuis Henri Ier en 1027. Dernier en date : Charles X en 1825. Mais aujourd’hui, on vient surtout admirer un édifice remarquable qui se distingue par son unité de style, sa luminosité et, surtout, sa statuaire. Pas moins de 2 303 statues parmi lesquelles le célèbre Ange au sourire, dont l’expression joviale reflète l’esprit de l’école champenoise du XIIe siècle, et la galerie des rois composée de 56 statues d’une hauteur de 4,50 mètres. A l’intérieur, ce qui frappe d’emblée, ce sont les dimensions : près de 150m de long pour 38m de haut. Mais à y regarder de plus près, on ne peut être qu’admiratif devant les vitraux dont certains sont signés Chagall. A la contempler si majestueuse, difficile d’imaginer que Notre-Dame fut dévastée lors de la Grande Guerre. Les Allemands la bombardèrent avec une telle intensité, qu’elle fut surnommée « La cathédrale martyre.

Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Reims - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Cathedral in Reims, along with the nearby Archbishop's Palace and the former Abbey of Saint-Remi, makes for an interesting World Heritage Site. The Cathedral dates back to the 12th century, and is closely associated with French royalty, as it's where coronations were generally done. Over 30 French kings and queens were crowned here! The nearby Abbey of Saint-Remi is also fascinating, as it pre-dates the Cathedral and houses the remains of Saint-Remi, who converted the Franks to Christianity.

Au lendemain de l'incendie qui a ravagé Notre-Dame de Paris, les images des charpentes brûlées en rappellent d'autres : celles de la cathédrale de Reims, meurtrie après la Première Guerre mondiale. Après-guerre, jusqu'en 1938, les alliés vont s'attacher à reconstruire le monument.

L'historien Patrick Demouy rappelle que la cathédrale de Reims, construite à la même époque que Notre-dame de Paris, a subi deux incendies. Le plus important en 1914.
