Basilique Sainte-Anne of the Congo
Basilique Sainte-Anne of the Congo
The Sainte-Anne-du-Congo basilica is a minor basilica located in Brazzaville, capital of Congo. It is the monument of Brazzaville which presents the greatest architectural interest, according to some.
It was in 1936 that Bishop Biéchy, vicar apostolic of Brazzaville, decided, in order to face the influx of converts to Poto-Poto, the erection of an important sanctuary in this district of Brazzaville. In 1943 came out of the ground an extremely innovative building due to the talent of the Protestant architect Roger Lelièvre, known as Erell (1907-1986). Roger Erell achieves an astonishing fusion of European technical contributions and local cultural contributions. For the first time, he brought in Aboriginal artists such as Benoit Konongo. The historical context is favorable: Brazzaville, which is the official capital of free France, needs strong and visible symbols. Félix Éboué and General de Gaulle are enthusiastic. The Sainte-Anne church in Congo, whose construction site is slowly changing under the supervision of Fathers Moysan and Lecomte, is destined to be the sanctuary of memory of free France. Mohammed V and the Emperor of Ethiopia contributed.
Father Leconte is the main actor and site manager for the construction of Sainte-Anne du Congo (as well as the football stadium built at the same time) and the collection of the necessary funds from the parishioners of mainland France. He hires the young reporter Joëlle Danterne to film and write the story of this extraordinary architectural and human adventure. Shown in Parisian parishes, the Notre-Dame du Congo film reports numerous donations allowing the continuation of the construction site (its author will later become the writer Anne Golon, creator of the character of Angélique, Marquise des Anges).
On a classical Latin cross plan, Erell designed a building of vast proportions (85 m long, transept 45 m wide, 22 m vaulted height, 83 m spire) using a very sharp pointed arch inspired by the Spearheads of northern Congo, the shell shells in Chad and the giant bamboo tunnels of Mayombe. Green tiles refer to the generous nature of the equatorial environment; those in the form of snake scales evoke, like the gargoyles of medieval cathedrals, the evil one who remains outside the church. The interior lighting is zenithal, and is done by the stop of the roof where the ceramic tiles are replaced by tinted glass blades. The magnificent grandstand that goes far into the nave without vertical support is adorned with a wrought iron balustrade made by a local artist who was inspired by pre-colonial weapons.
The bell installed in 2011.
In 1949, the church that will become basilica is dedicated with the Mass of Piroguiers composed for this occasion by Mrs. Barrat-Pepper. Work continues a few years, but lack of resources, the arrow remains unfinished: its hastily covered base has long formed the bell tower. The basilica was damaged during the civil wars of the 1990s. Major restoration works were carried out in the late 2000s. The tower's work, begun in July 2010, was completed in January 2011. The arrow in metal and glass originally planned by the architect was set up by an Italian company, Errezeta, and provided with bells also made in Italy by the Pontifical Foundry Marinelli, in Agnone, the whole project being managed by the architect Pierre -Antoine Gatier and the executive project created and directed by the Italian architect-engineer Giovanni Di Iorio. The President of the Republic inaugurated the works on March 25, 2011, stressing the importance of the basilica for Congo and Central Africa1.
