RSGSS Special Presentation by Dr Patrick McCartney
This presentation, titled: Yoga Fundamentalism: Decolonising Yogaland, missiological allyship, and pan-global Hindu supremacy occurred at the Religious Studies Graduate Student Society Symposium during April 2019 at the University of Alberta, Canada.
In this episode, Dr Patrick McCartney asks: what implicit ethno-nationalist-laden victuals exist within the global consumption-scape of Yogaland? The floating signifiers of 'yoga' and 'Vedic,' particularly, enable seemingly incommensurable social worlds to form unlikely alliances through independently assigning meaning to these empty signs. This paper outlines the mechanics of this process through articulating the various affective rhetorical appeals that couple with the universalising principle; which consists of: a neo-romantic ethic, a nostalgic cosmopolitan mood, and a neo-pagan/deep eco-theology. This acts as a solvent rendering the semantic and political boundaries, porous. What, then, are the unintended consequences of this commensalism? By articulating how self-proclaimed decolonisers of yoga buffer criticism of Hindu nationalism camouflaged by political correctness, we gain clarity in understanding how the decolonisation process exculpates 'yoga fundamentalists' of their perceived privilege, guilt, and appropriation; however, it often results in being groomed to help normalise the political theology of Hindutva.

Thánh Lễ mừng Bổn mạng Cộng đoàn Kariya - Nhật Bản ngày 1/10/2017
VÀI NÉT VỀ CỘNG ĐOÀN NGƯỜI CÔNG GIÁO VIỆT NAM TẠI KARIYA
Cộng đoàn người Công giáo Việt nam tại Kariya hiện nay được thành lập cách đây năm năm, năm 2012, do linh mục An-tôn Vũ Khánh Tường, dòng Truyền giáo Ngôi Lời phụ trách. Trước đó, anh chị em người Công giáo sống ở Kariya và các vùng phụ cận thường đến tham dự Thánh Lễ tại nhà thờ Nanzan (Nagoya). Tuy nhiên, ngày càng có đông các anh chị em sang Nhật làm việc, du học, đoàn tụ gia đình…nên nhu cầu mục vụ rất khẩn thiết. Được sự chấp thuận của Cha Phê-rô Ma-ri-a Nguyễn Hữu Hiến, linh mục đặc trách Giáo đoàn Công giáo Việt nam tại Nhật (Cha Tuyên úy Giáo đoàn), một cộng đoàn nhỏ bé, với khoảng hơn mười mấy anh chị em được hình thành, cùng nhau tham dự Thánh Lễ tiếng Việt được cử hành mỗi tháng một lần, nâng đỡ nhau trong đời sống đức Tin. Thời gian đầu Cộng đoàn được hình thành và phát triển là nhờ sự hy sinh và đóng góp công sức cũng như vật chất của các anh chị em nòng cốt trong cộng đoàn và nhờ sự đồng hành thiêng liêng và hướng dẫn của Quý Cha trong Giáo đoàn, đặc biệt của linh mục Emmanuel Trần Văn Bỉnh, dòng Phan-xi-cô Viện tu. Tháng 4 năm 2013, cha Tường chuyển nhiệm sở về Nagasaki, Cha Bỉnh đã tiếp tục vai trò linh mục phụ trách cộng đoàn, cho đến khi Cha nhận nhiệm sở mới ở Osaka từ tháng 4 năm 2017. Ơn Chúa sắp đặt, Cha Tường quay trở lại phụ trách cộng đoàn sau bốn năm xa cách.
Cho đến hôm nay, số người tham dự Thánh Lễ tiếng Việt hằng tháng đã lên đến hơn một trăm. Cộng đoàn gồm hầu hết các bạn trẻ, rất năng động và nhiệt tình, không chỉ trong các hoạt động của cộng đoàn Việt nam, nhưng còn trong các hoạt động của giáo xứ sở tại, như các Thánh Lễ Quốc tế, các kỳ Bazzar... Hằng năm, cộng đoàn tổ chức quyên góp và gởi về giúp cho cô nhi viện Thánh An (Bùi Chu). Liên tục trong ba năm gần đây, cộng đoàn cũng tổ chức vui Trung thu cho các em nhỏ trong cộng đoàn cũng như các trẻ em Việt nam quanh khu vực Kariya, để các em nhỏ được sinh ra ở Nhật có cơ hội nói tiếng Việt, được vui chơi và biết được một trong những truyền thống của thiếu nhi Việt nam. Cộng đoàn cũng quyên góp để giúp đỡ đồng bào ở quê nhà mỗi khi có thiên tai.
Một trong những hoạt động thu hút được sự chú ý của mọi người là Lễ Giáng sinh và Thánh Lễ mừng Bổn mạng Cộng đoàn. Cộng đoàn đã chọn Thánh nữ Tê-rê-sa Hài Đồng Giê-su làm Bổn mạng, với ước mong học nơi Thánh nữ sự đơn sơ, khiêm nhường và làm mọi việc, dù là việc nhỏ với tất cả Tình yêu. Ngày Bổn mạng năm nay cũng đúng vào ngày Lễ hằng tháng của Cộng đoàn (Chúa Nhật đầu tháng). Vì ngày kính Thánh nữ Tê-rê-sa Hài Đồng Giê-su cũng là ngày đầu tháng mười (1/10), tháng Mân Côi, trước Thánh Lễ cộng đoàn đã tổ chức dâng hoa và rước kiệu Đức Mẹ. Những tà áo dài, những cành hoa hồng, những điệu múa dâng hoa lên Đức Mẹ là một nét đặc trưng của Cộng đoàn Công giáo Việt nam đã tô điểm thêm cho những hoạt động của giáo xứ Kariya. Cũng cần nói thêm, xin cám ơn Cha Chánh xứ Philip Matthew đã rất ưu ái và tạo mọi điều kiện để cộng đoàn Việt nam được sinh hoạt và sống niềm tin nơi giáo xứ này.
Mối quan tâm hiện nay của cộng đoàn là giáo dục đức tin cho thế hệ tiếp theo, cũng như hướng dẫn và đồng hành với các bạn trẻ chuẩn bị bước vào đời sống hôn nhân Công giáo. Ước mong sự hiện diện của cộng đoàn Công giáo Việt nam tại Kariya là nơi gặp gỡ của yêu thương, đón nhận và trao ban, làm chứng cho Tin Mừng giữa một xã hội vật chất và hưởng thụ.

Nagoya (名古屋) is the largest city in the Chūbu region of Japan. It is Japan's fourth-largest incorporated city and the third-most-populous urban area. It is located on the Pacific coast on central Honshu. It is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and is one of Japan's major ports along with those of Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Yokohama, Chiba, and Kitakyushu. It is also the center of Japan's third-largest metropolitan region, known as the Chūkyō metropolitan area. As of 2015, 2.28 million people lived in the city, part of Chūkyō Metropolitan Area's 10.11 million people.
It is also one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world.

Catholic higher education includes universities, colleges, and other institutions of higher education privately run by the Catholic Church, typically by religious institutes. Those tied to the Holy See are specifically called pontifical universities.
By definition, Catholic canon law states that A Catholic school is understood to be one which is under control of the competent ecclesiastical authority or of a public ecclesiastical juridical person, or one which in a written document is acknowledged as Catholic by the ecclesiastical authority (Can. 803). Although some schools are deemed Catholic because of their identity and a great number of students enrolled are Catholics, it is also stipulated in canon law that no school, even if it is in fact Catholic, may bear the title 'Catholic school' except by the consent of the competent ecclesiastical authority (Can. 803 §3).
The Dominican Order was the first order instituted by the Church with an academic mission, founding studia conventualia in every convent of the order, and studia generalia at the early European universities such as the University of Bologna and the University of Paris. In Europe, most universities with medieval history were founded as Catholic. Many of them were rescinded to government authourities in the Modern era. Some, however, remained Catholic, while new ones were established alongside the public ones. The Catholic Church is still the largest non-governmental provider of higher education in the world. Many of them are still internationally competitive. According to the census of the Vatican's Congregation for Catholic Education, the total number of Catholic universities and higher education institutions around the world is 1,358. On the other hand, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops counts it at 1,861. The Catholic religious order with the highest number of universities around the world today is the Society of Jesus with 114.Like other private schools, Catholic universities and colleges are generally nondenominational, in that they accept anyone regardless of religious affiliation, nationality, ethnicity, or civil status, provided the admission or enrollment requirements and legal documents are submitted, and rules and regulations are obeyed for a fruitful life on campus. However, non-Catholics, whether Christian or not, may or may not participate in otherwise required campus activities, particularly those of a religious nature.
