Thurmont Maryland & Cunningham Falls State Park
Today a friend and I drove up to Thurmont, Maryland in Frederick county and went to Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park. There was still snow on the ground, but it was unseasonably warm. Very mild temps for the first day of winter! I love Maryland's beautiful places.

Chimney Rock - Rock Scramble / Back Way Up - Catoctin Mountain Park - Thurmont, MD
When you take the regular Chimney Rock trail from the Catoctin Mountain Park Headquarters, there is a back way up to Chimney Rock. After arriving at a flat area up the trail just past a trail sign, a large pile of rocks is off to your left. Access this back way / rock scramble here.

Hiking Catoctin Mountain Park & Cunningham Falls
I hiked this on a Friday in late September and had the park virtually to myself. I enjoyed the multiple overlooks and did some rock scrambling on Chimney Rock. I accidentally took a wrong turn and added a two mile down and back to Camp Airy (the trail is not on the Park Service map).
Pros: Multiple overlooks, well maintained trails, good signage. I have always enjoyed Cunningham Falls so that is a good way to top off a day in the woods.
Cons: Several portions of the trail are wide smooth gravel. I guess one person’s Pro is another’s Con. I thought it detracted from the natural experience. It seems funny that they don’t blaze the trails to keep them more natural but are willing to truck in tons of gravel (note, the gravel tends to only be around the more popular places). The road noise off of 77 on the south side and 550 (to a lesser extent) on the north side was ever-present (mostly motorcycles). The hike between Cunningham Falls, the Visitor Center, and the Park HQ is within sight of the 77 which really detracted from the experience.

Here are the highlights of our annual trip to the Catoctin Mountains to fish for rainbow and brown trout in May.

Lures: Panther Martin and Mepps spinners blade sizes 0 to 2.
Jigs: Gronaw's Big Eye minnow and Gronaw's Grass Shrimp patterns.
Weather: 76 degrees, mostly sunny, light southwest winds.
Specific waters: Owens Creek and Friends Creek
Additional info: The Catoctin Mountains in north central Maryland, along with the Frederick City Watershed has numerous trout streams such as Friends, Fishing, Owens, Big Hunting Creek, Little Hunting Creek, Israel Creek and nearby Beaver Creek and Antietam Creek. Various regulations on some of these creeks so be sure to check the Maryland DNR trout fishing webpage for specifics. Best time to fish the Catoctins is April, May and June and again in October and November. Stocking occurs in spring and fall but holdover trout remain in many creeks and there are native brook trout waters for those willing to hike and explore. Accommodations are available at Cunningham Falls State Park (camping) and various lodging options in Frederick, MD. Food and restaurant options are available in the Emmitsburg/Thurmont area along the US Route 15 corridor and within the towns as well.
