2019 JaxBest animal attraction winner: Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary
Looking to get up close and personal with animals, specifically some big cats? The first stop on your list should be the Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary, the 2019 JaxBest pick for best animal attraction.
Meet Spiderman at Jacksonville’s (Catty Shack Ranch) Big Cat Sanctuary [Wildlife Refuge] [2019]
bUneke’s Emily Murphy visits Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jacksonville, Florida and speaks with executive director, Curt LoGiudice to learn about his mission. She also talks with Dr. Fred Stuart, who answers many questions. Then, she has a talk with Spiderman.
Spiderman is one of the panthera tigris altaicas at Catty Shack, more commonly known as Siberian Tigers. He’s also been given the honorary title of “Best Sprayer,” which will explain why Emily is busy spritzing herself with perfume in the video. Spiderman’s behavior, prior to Emily’s perfuming ritual, led to a lengthy conversation between human and tiger.
Curt has chosen to make it his life’s mission to create better lives for these animals. “We are all committed to providing them with a better quality of life.”
Curt began working with exotic animals in 1982. When he first opened Catty Shack Ranch, in 1986, he had 5 acres and only a few big cats. In 2019, the sanctuary has expanded to 225 acres and now has more than 35 animals from tigers, lions, leopards and bobcats to coatimundis, foxes and horses. Every animal has been a rescue and many of them have been raised from a young age.
The 501c3 organization works closely with city, state and federal government and has a team of qualified, volunteer medical professionals who work to keep these animals healthy and thriving. It’s a team effort. This is my dream, but everyone, working together, has made it a reality.”
Emily even got a sneak peek into what’s in store for the park’s visitors in the near future. As funding makes buildouts possible, Catty Shack Ranch will open it’s glamping site and will even offer mini-safari stays.
Be sure to watch for Emily’s Tip so you know what you can expect when you visit Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary.

A Visit to the Catty Shack Ranch with John Buckley_HD_720p.wmv
This is a video piece done as part of an employee profile for the newsletter I produce for the City of Jacksonville.
Volunteer with SBS / Catty Shack
It all started about 30 years ago with our Executive Director/Curator Curt LoGiudice. Curt actually started out training police dogs and began working with exotic animals in 1982. He acquired his state license in 1984 and his federal license in 1992. In 1994 “The Florida Panther project” asked him to be their representative in Jacksonville for educational presentations about endangered panthers. His rescue mission had begun. Curt has continued to learn from veterinarians caring for his animals and attends conferences in The Exotic Animal Industry and attends meetings with the Fish and Game Commission in Florida. Curt works with the USDA and state officials when accepting animals from private owners who can longer care for their animals. Most importantly, he has earned the respect of the animals in his care and the mutual respect is obvious to anyone watching!
In 2000, the Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary was granted its nonprofit 501©3 status. A board of directors was established and has taken many steps to help ensure the best care possible for the animals in need. The board adopted a no breeding, no selling, no trading, and no buying policy to help ensure every animal that is given refuge here will not be jeopardized by irresponsible growth. Some of the cats were born here in the past, but they have stayed here and we have never sold, traded or bought any animals in the past. All of the animals taken in at the Catty Shack Ranch have a permanent home for life.
In 2004, we became licensed/accredited to be open to the public. We strongly believe in educating our children and the public about the dangers of owning these beautiful exotic animals as “House Pets”, and their plight in the wild. We give educational school tours year round and we are open on selected weekends to the public. Please visit our link “Upcoming Events” for more information.
We are fortunate to have our own Medical Facility on the property to care for our animals. We have a group of very dedicated veterinarians and dentists that are committed to giving our animals the best care available.
Last but not least, we could not be where we are today if not for all of our volunteers. The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is completely run by volunteers. We have NO paid employees, so 100% of donations goes directly to benefit the animals. We even have a thrift store that is stocked by generous donations from our supporting community. Please visit our link “Volunteer Opportunities” if you are interested in volunteering to help these beautiful animals!

Places to see in ( Jacksonville - USA )
Jacksonville is a large city in northeastern Florida where the St. John’s River meets the Atlantic Ocean. A regional business center, it has many museums and cultural offerings. Swimming and surfing are popular at nearby barrier island beaches such as Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach. Championship golf courses in the area include Ponte Vedra Beach’s TPC Sawgrass, headquarters of the PGA Tour.
Jacksonville is situated on the Atlantic coast of northeast Florida. It is the most populous city in the of Florida measured by the number of residents. But Jacksonville covers an enormous area, and is in fact the largest city in area in the continental United States. The city has a large area, but also has a low density rate. The metropolitan area extends beyond Duval County into Nassau, St. Johns, Baker and Clay counties and has a population of more than 1.25 million people. The city's metropolitan population is not the largest in Florida, it is exceeded by the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, Tampa, and Orlando metro areas.
Jacksonville is widely known as a hard-working, blue-collar city. While a substantial portion of Jacksonville's economy is supported by both of its large U.S. Navy bases (Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport), it is also a hotbed for the banking, logistics, insurance, and healthcare sectors. The downtown skyline, notable for its bridges of various styles and colors, spans along the St. Johns River with a pedestrian river walk located on each bank. Although the bulk of Jacksonville's population is suburban in nature and spread throughout Duval County, renewed development efforts are currently underway in the urban core along with preservation efforts in its historic districts. Jacksonville is nicknamed JAX, or 'The Bold City'
At a whopping 840 sq miles, Jacksonville is the largest city by area in the contiguous United States and the most populous in Florida. The city sprawls along three meandering rivers, with sweeping bridges and twinkling city lights reflected in the water. A glut of high-rises, corporate HQs and chain hotels can make 'Jax' feel a little soulless, but patient exploration yields some interesting streets, curious characters and a Southern-fried, friendly heart.
The city's museums and restored historic districts are worth a wander if you have the time, and the Five Points and San Marco neighborhoods are charming, walkable areas lined with bistros, boutiques and bars. The Jacksonville area beaches – a world unto themselves – are 30 to 50 minutes' drive from the city, depending on traffic and where you're coming from.
