Cedar Breaks, Utah, United States 1999
Cedar Breaks National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located in the U.S. state of Utah near Cedar City. Cedar Breaks is a natural amphitheater, stretching across 3 miles (4.8 km), with a depth of over 2,000 feet (610 m). The elevation of the rim of the amphitheater is over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above sea level.
The eroded rock of the amphitheater is more eroded than, but otherwise similar to formations at Bryce Canyon National Park, Red Canyon in Dixie National Forest and select areas of Cedar Mountain (SR-14). Because of its elevation, snow often makes parts of the park inaccessible to vehicles from October through May. Its rim visitor center is open from June through October. Several hundred thousand people visit the monument annually. The monument area is the headwaters of Mammoth Creek, a tributary of the Sevier River.

Cedar Breaks National Monument
A mere 22 miles east of Cedar City along SR148 is the scenic gem Cedar Breaks National Monument. Set high atop the Markagunt Plateau, Cedar Breaks is a natural amphitheater rich in color and delicate in form. A six-mile scenic drive along State Route 148 leads past four overlooks, each offering a different perspective of the Cedar Breaks and Ashdown Gorge Wilderness area. In the winter, the road through Cedar Breaks closes to become groomed trail for snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Ben Starr takes you to stunning Cedar Breaks National Monument, between Utah's popular Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. Showcasing the same spectacular, colorful, eroded sandstone cliffs that you find in nearby, overcrowded Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks is virtually unknown and you'll likely have it all to yourself, rather than having to battle the crowds and navigate the complicated shuttle system at Bryce. The viewpoints are only steps from paved turnouts along Utah's stunning highway 148 that runs through high alpine country near Brian Head ski resort, through meadows grazed in summer by flocks of sheep.

For those of you who don't know about the Passport Book for the National Parks. You can buy a Passport Book, one of three types, to log your day or days in each Park, Monument or other Historic Site. You stamp your own book with a ink stamp that has the name of the Park and date you were there, in this way you can always look back to see the dates you were in each Park. There is a children's version of the Passport book, don't know much about that one. Two main Passport books, one that is bound and is pocket size, the other is a binder type that you can add pages when you fill a section with stamps. Each area of the country has it's own section, Capital Area - Washington DC, or Southeastern - most southeastern states, and so on.

Hiking to Spectra Point in Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah
Cedar Breaks National Monument is located just 25 miles east of Cedar City. It is a beautiful landscape that resemble that of Bryce Canyon National Park, just much smaller. There are a few short overlook hikes starting at the main entrance parking area. We chose to hike to Spectra Point; a lovely, easy 2 mile round trip hike with a 350 ft elevation change.
