This place is awesome if you are looking for a quiet, laid back vacation to relax, enjoy nature and just take it easy in the beauty of the Florida Gulf Coast. Fishing, crabbing, kayaking and nature watching are just some of the things to keep your days busy or just read a book, whatever.
Cindy and I loved this little piece of paradise.
Cedar Key is a city in Levy County, Florida, United States. The population was 790 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2005, the city had a population of 958. The Cedar Keys are a cluster of islands near the mainland. Most of the developed area of the city has been on Way Key since the end of the 19th century. The Cedar Keys are named for the Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus virginiana, once abundant in the area.
While evidence suggests human occupation as far back as 500 BC, the first maps of the area date to 1542, when it was labeled Las Islas Sabines by a Spanish cartographer. An archaeological dig at Shell Mound, 9 miles (14 km) north of Cedar Key, found artifacts dating back to 500 BC in the top 10 feet (3.0 m) of the 28-foot-tall (8.5 m) mound. The only ancient burial found in Cedar Key was a 2,000-year-old skeleton found in 1999.
Arrow heads and spear points dating from the Paleo period (12,000 years old) were collected by Cedar Key historian St. Clair Whitman and are displayed at the Cedar Key Museum State Park.
The Cedar Keys were used by Seminole Indians, by the Spanish as a watering stop for ships returning to Spain from Mexico, and by pirates, such as Jean Lafitte and Captain Kidd.

Fantastic, Cheap, Waterfront Campground Cedar Key Florida | Wow!
As we continue to travel north up the Gulf coast of Florida we find two awesome, small, quaint towns... Homosassa and Cedar Key. We continue to be amazed at the places our Travato 59K camper van takes us. We just find a back road and take it and see where it ends up. That’s not something you can do in a bigger RV. We found the neatest country campground in Cedar Key... Shell Mound Campground. Wow! On the water with hookups for $20 per night!

Exploring Cedar Key Museum Florida State Park in Cedar Key Florida in the North central ares of Florida. The museum revolves around Saint Clair Whitman and life in Florida in the 1920-1930's. The house was bult around 1880 and is furnished as it would have been in the 1920-1930. There has been many Indian Artifacts found in the area and are on display there also.

Cedar Key, Florida to Chiefland: the back way, SR 24, SR 345
Enjoy this drive from scenic Cedar Key, Florida, back to the nearest somewhat-big town, Chiefland. The drive begins on State Road 24, then follows County Route 345 which turns into State Road 345 shortly before arriving back in Chiefland, Florida.
I made this trip in October 2018.

Aerial Tour of Florida's Hidden Coast - Cedar Key to Steinhatchee, 6-5-18
Aerial Tour of the Hidden Coast - June 5, 2018 Cedar Key, Suwannee, Horseshoe Beach, Jena, Steinhatchee with photos of Crystal River and places inbetween.
Organized by Ben West, armed with cameras and a plane on loan from Keith Baird, Pilot Bruce Brown and Cameraman Jeff Cary took flight for a one hour tour... turned to a three hour tour due to too much fun... to shoot photos and video of the Gulf Coast from Crystal River to Steinhatchee and back to Ocala International Airport.
We checked the deserted islands for any sign of the Minnow, the mate, a mighty sailing man, the skipper, brave and sure, and their five passengers who set sail for a three hour tour... extended to three seasons 1964-1967. Looks like they made it home safe without us.
We may have to make a rerun three years from now. Meanwhile, enjoy the view! Share with your friends. It really was an eye-opening experience to see what all my favorite places look like from above.
