What’s the capital of Nevada? What’s the top speed of a Boeing 747 in miles per hour? And what Brazilian soccer player was nicknamed “The Phenomenon?” The answers to any of these can help you win big in Naperville.

It’s all part of Trivia Night at World of Beer. Every Tuesday the crew invites “Go For It Entertainment” and locals to come out and test their knowledge while enjoying a drink.

“It brings a huge crowd and it’s always a blast. Our regulars over time have learned to absolutely love it, so you see a little friendly competition that keeps bringing them back,” said Rob Sanner, Product Manager at World of Beer.

Here’s how it works: come to the bar with a team and a team name, wager your points, and hope to get the most answers correct for a chance at the prizes.

“I try to make it kind of an experience, you’re hanging out at the bar, and I’m the guy you come to hang out with. That’s the experience I’m trying to go for. The questions generally run the gamut of trivial pursuit questions, movies, sports, history, science, that type of thing,” said Jeff Gimm, Trivia Host with “Go For It Entertainment.”

With over 17 teams competing in one night, it’s clear the trend is catching on.

“About nine years ago, nobody had trivia in the ‘burbs, if they did I didn’t hear of them. It’s just been growing, and growing, and growing and there’s a whole bunch of different bars and trivia nights,” said Gabriel Ortiz, Owner of “Go For It Entertainment.”

And anyone can play- from first timers…

“So we’ve talked about anything from like shark week questions, to general trivia, and random questions, trying to get the closest answer, so we’re doing our best. We’re not doing great, but we’re trying,” said Courtney Voise, a first-time player at World of Beer.

To seasoned veterans…

“We’ve been playing trivia for 12 years, I love trivia, love playing it, we’ve played in tournaments with Gabe before, won $2,000,” said Mike Tennyson, a trivia player.

While the top prize tops out around $30 dollars at World of Beer, most come out just for the experience.

“Drinking beers, having fun with your friends, and why not play trivia as well?” said Joe Marks, a trivia player.

Wonderful World of Wheels

Recently kids were invited to hitch a ride with the Naperville Park District.

Their Wonderful World of Wheels event invited young kids to take an imaginary ride with vehicles they see everyday.

Little ones were welcome to climb, explore and even make some noise with the city’s community vehicles like fire trucks, police cars and even tractors.

“Kids love trucks, that’s just the name of the game, so we put this on so kids can get a chance to see their favorite trucks, meet the drivers and see that it’s safe,” said Ashley Summers, Special Event and Party Coordinator with the Naperville Park District. “It’s really important that kids know police are safe, firefighters are safe and then we just throw a bunch of other trucks in there just because why not!”

Tears ran down the faces of some community members, as hard, but meaningful conversations were held at the municipal center for District 203’s conversation about race and implicit bias.

The morning session of the Focus 203 event drew a crowd of about 100 to the round table discussions, which touched on topics like experiencing racism in Naperville, and speaking about it with their families.

Marala Baker, a resident of Naperville, said she attended Focus 203 because she wanted to share a racist incident her son went through and see the reaction of district officials.

“My son was sent a picture of a letter of a noose, he was sent pictures told to die, he was told to kill himself, called the n word over, and over again,” said Baker.

Baker, says her family is currently seeking a counselor for her son.

Another Naperville resident said sharing stories with one another can help with the burden people of color go through.

“It’s imperative that I have conversations with my children, [and] my wife,” said Cy Fields “For survival purposes, for resilience, so when they face racism, bigotry, and all of these kinds of things, they’ll know how to properly respond and not internalize it, like this mother so bravely expressed.”

Though the Focus 203 topics was chosen months earlier, it opened up a public chance to discuss the racist act which took place at Naperville Central High School was posted on Craigslist that read “Slave for sale (NAPERVILLE).

Superintendent Dan Bridges spoke of the incident saying, racist acts have no place in District 203.
“As educational institutions we really are the center hub of this community,” said Bridges. “We have an important role not only to educate our kids that racism and hatred don’t have a place anywhere. We must value the dignity uniqueness of each individual we’re going to take on the responsibility.”

The district said it has seen a spike in racial slurs this year, and will continue to investigate why that is.

Naperville 203’s Early Childhood Programs

Superintendent Dan Bridges discusses Naperville 203’s early childhood programs including full-day preschool classes and the district’s birth to three outreach with A.J. McCree, Principal at Ann Reid Early Childhood Center and Peggy Kiefer, a Parent Educator for Early Learning Programs.

This year two full-day preschool classes at District elementary schools opened which allowed for more program access for students. The District also continues to expand its birth to three outreach to support parents in our community, as well as collaboration with local organizations to support reaching all students in the community.

The District’s Mission is to educate students to be self-directed learners, collaborative workers, complex thinkers, quality producers and community contributors.

You may have noticed some new faces at District 204 schools, and that’s because 116 teachers were hired for the new school year. At the latest Indian Prairie School District 204 board meeting, officials presented a report about the landscape of its staff.

The district saw an increase of 27.2 full-time equivalency staff positions, which includes teachers, nurses, and other staff.

“We have remained in budget, the majority of our licensed increases are related to evidence based funding, supporting mental health, and class sizes at title one schools,” said Carey Harry, the human resources coordinator at IPSD. “The increase also reflects support to the Achieve Program at Wheatland Academy.”

District 204 officials got a head start on the hiring process this year, completing most of it in the spring. As a part of their recruiting efforts, IPSD focused on hiring minority staff members to improve diversity within the district.

“This past year, 12.4% of our new licensed hires were persons of color,” said Doug Ecarius, the assistant superintendent for human resources at IPSD. “When I say licensed hire, I’m referring to our teaching staff. Last year, that number was at 8.5%, and, last year was lower than previous years.”

Across District 204, 16% of staff are people of color.

There are still several open teaching positions available in the district, and not enough qualified people to fill them.

“Last year the state of Illinois could not fill over 1,400 teaching positions, 1,000 support personnel positions, and around 80 administrative positions,” said Ecarius. “That continues to be a challenge. They’re expecting numbers this year to be even higher.”

The district will continue its recruiting strategies by attending more college job fairs, which include visiting several historically black colleges and universities.
