Thousands sing with Prince for peace in US city
Washington, May 11 (IANS) Thousands of people sang with Prince at a concert for peace in the US city of Baltimore, in a response to the riots that followed the death in custody of young black man Freddie Gray, Efe news agency reported.
Prince returned to Baltimore on Sunday, 14 years since his last Rally 4 Peace concert there.
The concert, announced to everyone's surprise last week, offered a catalyst for pause and reflection after the incidents of April 27.
Among the audience was the Maryland State Prosecutor, Marilyn Mosby, whose office is responsible for Gray's case.
Shortly after his performance began, Prince invited her to the stage, where she made no statement, only greeting the public with a wave.
Mosby's spokesperson told the daily Baltimore Sun that the prosecutor was a big fan of the artist and that her tickets were a Mother's Day gift from husband Councillor Nick Mosby.
Prince invited the prosecutor to join him for the performance of his new song Baltimore, his tribute to black Americans who have died at the hands of police officers.

Prior to February, 2011, inmates housed at MCAC were confined to their cells 23 hours a day Monday through Friday and 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday. The State of Maryland now has a contract with the federal government to solely house federal pre-trial detainees at MCAC. These federal detainees are not subjected to the supermax conditions that the prior state inmates were subjected to. Federal detainees recreate together both inside and outside everyday of the week, eat together, and have access to phones.Until June 2010, MCAC also housed Maryland's death row inmates. Male death row inmates were housed at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Allegany County, Maryland from 2010 until death row was closed in 2014. Executions took place across the street from the MCAC at the former Maryland Penitentiary (now known as the Metropolitan Transition Center (MTC)).As with most prisons in Maryland, MCAC is headed by a Warden, Assistant Warden, and a Chief of Security. Rules and regulations of the Division of Correction and MCAC are enforced by uniformed correctional officers. Uniformed correctional officers consist of, in descending order of rank; Majors, Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants, Correctional Officer II's, and Correctional Officer I's.

The world premiere will open January 24 and run through February 9, 2020. Tickets are $25.00 (Adults), $23.00 (Seniors 60+/Students/Military), and $20.00 (Children 12 and under). In Shattering, Jonah has just been released from juvenile commitment into the foster care of Jacqueline Dawson, whose estranged son Jonah helped to murder. She witnessed the crime and testified against the other two perpetrators. Now the gang leader who organized that crime wants to teach a lesson about what happens to “snitches.” He orders Jonah to torture and kill Jacqueline— or be killed himself. The instructions come through Jonah’s girlfriend LaBelle, whose investment in the outcome is intensified by her pregnancy. Jonah and LaBelle plot the murder, even as Jonah’s relationship with the strict but caring Dawson develops, and his imagined visits with her dead son jar his conscience.
Tacoma Little Theatre (TLT) is located at 210 N I Street, Tacoma, Washington. Founded in 1918, TLT is a historic live theatre employing professional standards of excellence and has been at its present home in Tacoma's Stadium District for over seventy years. The AACT NewPlayFest world premiere production of Shattering by Pat Montley at TLT is made possible in part by a grant from the Jack K. Ayre and Frank Ayre Lee Theatre Foundation, created by the children of Frank Ayre Lee as a tribute to their father, and a legacy for the creative endeavors of his cousin Jack, who participated in theatre productions at Drew University in New Jersey and at a community theatre in Connecticut in his younger years. Lenny Robinson - Millennium Stage (March 20, 2018)
Born October 4, 1956, Lenny Robinson has become one of the foremost voices of jazz at the drums. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, in a rich musical environment. He played piano and organ in his father’s church in his early teens, trumpet in both junior high and high school, and came to love percussion in high school. Robinson’s first contact with jazz came early in junior high school with a Max Roach/Clifford Brown record. He then enrolled in the Peabody Conservatory of Music under Charles Memphis, principal percussionist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. After a year at Peabody, Robinson transferred to Morgan State University where Memphis was also on staff. While attending Morgan, Robinson’s first international gig was with Pamoja Experience, a theatrical jazz group that chronicled the black music experience from slave songs to the present. This group toured Europe and performed at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland, the Oslo Festival, and the North Sea Festival, as well as made theater appearances in various cities in Europe. Shortly after returning from Europe, Robinson was asked to join Jean Carne’s band. This band traveled extensively throughout the United States sharing concert billings with groups such as The O’Jays, Roy Ayers, The Gap Band, and other R&B groups of the early 1980s. Robinson then became a member of the 26th Army Band in Brooklyn, New York. He put together a band that included Onaje Allan Gumbs and Kenny Kirkland on piano, Anthony Cox on bass, and John Purcell on reeds. This band performed regularly at 55 Grand. Robinson has performed recording artists such as Dewey Redman, Clifford Jordan, Carter Jefferson, Vanessa Rubin, Lou Donaldson, Roy Hargrove, Kenny Barron, Eartha Kitt, Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson, Ahmad Jamal, Keter Betts, John Hicks, Larry Willis, and Don Braden, as well as the Bill Cosby show You Bet Your Life. He was a member of the late Stanley Turrentine’s working band and is currently touring and recording with Marlena Shaw as well as the saxophonist T. K. Blue. Robinson was also part of the adjunct faculty at Cheyney State University, as well as an instructor for the Living Jazz summer program, directed by Terrell Stafford, currently director of jazz studies at Temple University. Robinson was chosen to lead a group and be involved in the Harman Corporation’s Listening To Jazz educational program, which is a partnership between the Harman Corporation and Wynton Marsalis. Currently, Robinson is on the faculty at the prestigious Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. He is the leader of The Lenny Robinson Group, the co-leader of Lenny Robinson and Three For All, has an organ group called the Organic Trio, and a piano-less quartet MadCurious. He also produces records for his company Intrinsic Value Productions.

Inside Juvenile Detention
As recently as 2005, the state of Virginia had eight centers like Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, housing more than 1,300 delinquent youth. But by 2017, after a series of reforms, that number had shrunk to one.
“It's not that you can't do good work here,” said Andy Block, who, since 2014, has served as the juvenile-justice department’s director. “But the place itself and the design and the size and the location are barriers to doing good work.” Block and others are working to close Bon Air and replace it with something that reflects the juvenile justice reforms that have taken hold in Virginia and across the country—a system that once focused on confinement is now dedicated to rehabilitation. In recent years, more than 70 percent of Virginia's juvenile inmates were rearrested within three years of their release.*
Read more on The Atlantic:
*This documentary originally stated that Virginia has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country. This characterization was based on incomplete data. The documentary also stated that the three-year rearrest rate for current Bon Air inmates would be 74 percent. This was the rate for former juvenile inmates in Virginia in 2014. We regret the errors.
