Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 30, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
House impeachment managers and President Trump’s lawyers have concluded their opening arguments in the Senate. The impeachment trial is now in the question period for both sides, when senators submit questions in writing to Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. The chief justice will read questions out loud, alternating between the majority and minority for up to eight hours.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.

Inside Juvenile Detention
As recently as 2005, the state of Virginia had eight centers like Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, housing more than 1,300 delinquent youth. But by 2017, after a series of reforms, that number had shrunk to one.
“It's not that you can't do good work here,” said Andy Block, who, since 2014, has served as the juvenile-justice department’s director. “But the place itself and the design and the size and the location are barriers to doing good work.” Block and others are working to close Bon Air and replace it with something that reflects the juvenile justice reforms that have taken hold in Virginia and across the country—a system that once focused on confinement is now dedicated to rehabilitation. In recent years, more than 70 percent of Virginia's juvenile inmates were rearrested within three years of their release.*
Read more on The Atlantic:
*This documentary originally stated that Virginia has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country. This characterization was based on incomplete data. The documentary also stated that the three-year rearrest rate for current Bon Air inmates would be 74 percent. This was the rate for former juvenile inmates in Virginia in 2014. We regret the errors.

In which John Green teaches you about the early days of the Civil Rights movement. By way of providing context for this, John also talks a bit about wider America in the 1950s. The 1950s are a deeply nostalgic period for many Americans, but there is more than a little idealizing going on here. The 1950s were a time of economic expansion, new technologies, and a growing middle class. America was becoming a suburban nation thanks to cookie-cutter housing developments like the Levittowns. While the white working class saw their wages and status improve, the proverbial rising tide wasn't lifting all proverbial ships. A lot of people were excluded from the prosperity of the 1950s. Segregation in housing and education made for some serious inequality for African Americans. As a result, the Civil Rights movement was born. John will talk about the early careers of Martin Luther King, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, and even Earl Warren. He'll teach you about Brown v Board of Education, and the lesser known Mendez vs Westminster, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and all kinds of other stuff.
Crash Course World History is now available on DVD! Visit to buy a set for your home or classroom.
Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. The Civil Rights Movement gained national attention with the murder of Emmett Till in 1955:
That same year, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, beginning the Montgomery bus boycott:
A young preacher named Martin Luther King Jr. gained national fame rallying support for the Montgomery bus boycott:
The end of segregation also began in the South with the Showdown in Little Rock in 1957:

[503 LIVE] IU-Arkansas Postgame Show: Devonte's Surge Continues and Bench Provides Huge Boost
On Saturday afternoon, in front of a large and raucous crowd, Indiana avenged its early-season loss to Arkansas thanks to another big game from Devonte Green, a solid effort on both ends from Rob Phinisee, and a huge boost from the bench.
After the game, our crew broke it all down on The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.
On the mics: Jerod and Ryan
Among the topics discussed:
— How Devonte Green compensated for a few bad turnovers and shots with one of the most complete games of his career, and yet another in his encouraging late-season surge.
— The importance of De'Ron Davis responding to Archie's challenge and leading a strong bench effort.
— Rob Phinisee's understated by enormously impactful day on both ends of the court.
— Why Al Durham played well even if he didn't shoot well.
— Another rough outing for Justin Smith, who could not get going on either end.
We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. All of that, and more, on this edition of The Assembly Call.
(Music provided by Bob Thompson -- die-hard Hoosier fan and longtime Assembly Call listener.)
