Driving Downtown Neighborhoods - Nob Hill - San Francisco California USA - Episode 14.
Starting Point: California Street - . Neighborhood: Nob Hill - .
Nob Hill is a neighborhood in San Francisco, California. Nob Hill is an affluent district, home to many of the city's upper-class families as well as a large young urban professional population, and a growing Chinese immigrant population from Chinatown to the east. Nob is disparaging British slang abbreviation of noble/nobility referring to the monied, often titled upper-classes.
San Francisco
San Francisco (SF), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California. It is the most densely settled large city in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City.
A popular tourist destination, San Francisco is known for its cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture, and landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, the former Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, Fisherman's Wharf, and its Chinatown district. San Francisco is also the headquarters of five major banking institutions and various other companies such as Levi Strauss & Co., Gap Inc., Salesforce.com, Dropbox, Reddit, Square, Inc., Dolby, Airbnb, Weebly, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Yelp, Pinterest, Twitter, Uber, Lyft, Mozilla, Wikimedia Foundation, and Craigslist. It has several nicknames, including The City by the Bay, Fog City, San Fran, and Frisco, as well as older ones like The City that Knows How, Baghdad by the Bay, The Paris of the West, or simply The City. As of 2016, San Francisco is ranked high on world liveability rankings.
The last 20 years have seen two booms driven by the internet industry. First was the dot-com boom of the late 1990s, startup companies invigorated the San Francisco economy. Large numbers of entrepreneurs and computer application developers moved into the city, followed by marketing, design, and sales professionals, changing the social landscape as once-poorer neighborhoods became increasingly gentrified. Demand for new housing and office space ignited a second wave of high-rise development, this time in the South of Market district. By 2000, the city's population reached new highs, surpassing the previous record set in 1950. When the bubble burst in 2001, many of these companies folded and their employees were laid off. Yet high technology and entrepreneurship remain mainstays of the San Francisco economy. By the mid 2000s (decade), the social media boom had begun, with San Francisco becoming a popular location for tech offices and a popular place to live for people employed in Silicon Valley companies such as Apple and Google.
Economy
San Francisco has a diversified service economy, with employment spread across a wide range of professional services, including financial services, tourism, and (increasingly) high technology.
Tourism and Conventions
Tourism is one of the city's largest private-sector industries, accounting for more than one out of seven jobs in the city. The city's frequent portrayal in music, film, and popular culture has made the city and its landmarks recognizable worldwide.
Sports
Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants have played in San Francisco since moving from New York in 1958. The San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) were the longest-tenured major professional sports franchise in the city until moving in 2013.
Culture and Contemporary Life
Although the Financial District, Union Square, and Fisherman's Wharf are well-known around the world, San Francisco is also characterized by its numerous culturally rich streetscapes featuring mixed-use neighborhoods anchored around central commercial corridors to which residents and visitors alike can walk.
Beaches and Parks
Several of San Francisco's parks and nearly all of its beaches form part of the regional Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the most visited units of the National Park system in the United States with over 13 million visitors a year.

Central Park - New York City, New York
New Learn Pilates App!
Mahalo travel expert Asha K. shares a few quick tips about New York City's Central Park to help travelers plan their next visit.
Central Park
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Central Park is a national historic landmark located right in the center of Manhattan, between 59th and 110th Streets and Fifth and Eight Avenues. This New York City attraction receives an estimated 25 million visitors every year. You can easily spend an entire day wandering around this 843-acre park going to the Central Park Zoo, Wildlife Park, two skating rinks, a public pool and the Great Lawn. The Boathouse is a great venue for brunch or lunch, though prices are steep.
Attractions
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Carriage Horses: take a ride through the park on a horse-driven carriage.
Ice Skating: strap on your skates and head to one of two ice skating rinks - Wollman and Lasker. Lasker Rink converts to an outdoor swimming pool during the summer.
Central Park Carousel: installed in
1951, the carousel is one of the largest in the entire United States with 58 hand-carved horses and two chariots created in the early 1900s.Playgrounds: children will enjoy the 21 playgrounds throughout the park, the largest being the three acre Heckscher Playground.
Theatre: from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre and the Delacorte Theatre to the Great Lawn and Public Theatre, there are many theatre-venues in the Park, most open-air. Enjoy music, Shakespearean productions and more over the course of the year.
Central Park Zoo: visit an indoor rainforest, leafcutter ant colony, chilled penguin house and the polar bear pool among many other animal exhibits at the zoo.
Sports: rowboats and kayaks, baseball and birding, and even rock climbing can be found in Central Park. You can even just bring a frisbee to the Great Lawn to toss with friends.
Central Park History
---------------------------------------------------------------------
New York City purchased the terrain for Central Park in 1853 when the area was home to sheds, quarries, pig farms and swamps. Three years later, the city organized a competition for the park's design, desiring a rival to the great parks of London and Paris. The final layout design by Frederic Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux was chosen and dubbed The Greensward Plan.
Within the preliminary park plan was an English-style landscape with large meadows, lakes and hills; winding pedestrian roads would be invisible to anyone outside of the park with trees hiding the interior. Several hundred thousand trees had to be planted to convert the swamp areas to park. Fifteen years, three million cubic yards of soil, several bridges and reservoirs later and the park came to completion with the help of 20,000 workers.
During the late 1930s is when most of the sports facilities, the Wollman Rink and several playgrounds were installed. The zoo was also renovated and sculptures were installed.
By 1960, the park started to decline with graffiti, garbage and crime keeping tourists away. It wasn't until
1980 that the Central Park Conservancy was formed and Central Park began to take a turn for the better. The entire area was restored over the years and is now as beautiful as it was when it was first created.c

Steep Cliffs! Beware Rough and Scary Old Fall River Road Part 2 of 2 in High Quality
Old Fall River Road Part 2 of 2 Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado USA just beyond Chasm Falls Nearby cities: Denver, Fort Collins, Loveland, Boulder, Estes Park, Central City, Nederland, Allenspark, Colorado Springs, Lyons, Golden
The Fall River Road was the first road to cross the Rocky Mountains in northern Colorado. Starting by Larimer and Grant counties in 1913 before the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park, the early construction was carried out by state prison inmates. The convicts made little progress and contractors completed the road in 1920. The unpaved mountain road climbed from Horseshoe Park up the steep Fall River Valley over a series of tight switchbacks to reach Fall River Pass at 11,796'; from there, the road continued down the west side of the mountains to Grand Lake. Despite the popularity of the route, the road proved difficult to traverse and maintain. Automobiles had trouble mastering the steep grade and tight curves and avalanches often buried the road forty feet deep. Following the completion of Trail Ridge Road in 1932 the eastern Half of Fall River Road became a one-way scenic drive from Endovalley up to Fall River Pass; the western half was abandoned or overbuilt by the Trail Ridge Road.
GRADE: The road climbed to Fall River Pass on steep grades sometimes reaching 16%. Some early automobiles had to climb in reverse due to their weak engines and gravity-fed fuel system. Surface materials washed off quickly.
TURN RADIUS: Motorists had to negotiate sixteen switch-backs with radii as tight as 20'. Some vehicles had to turn back and forth repeatedly to make the curves.
Colorado Experience: Speer & the City
The turn of the 20th century sparked a massive migration to American cities, leading to an increase in pollution, crime and disease. Inspired by the beautiful modern urban aesthetic displayed in Chicago's World Fair in 1893, a City Beautiful Movement began to spread throughout the country. Denver's Mayor, Robert Speer, sought to beautify the city's buildings, parks and community areas while simultaneously constructing a controversial legacy.

Times Square is not a square in the geometric sense of a polygon, but is more of a bowtie shape, or two triangles emanating roughly north and south from 45th Street.[14] Duffy Square, the northernmost of Times Squares triangles, was dedicated in 1937 to Chaplain Francis P. Duffy of New York Citys U.S. 69th Infantry Regiment and is the site of a memorial to him, along with a statue of George M. Cohan.

The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States. With an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698 distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2), New York City is also the most densely populated major city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world, with an estimated 20.3 million people in its 2017 Metropolitan Statistical Area and 23.7 million residents in its Combined Statistical Area. A global power city, New York City has been described as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world, and exerts a significant impact upon commerce, entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, and sports. The city's fast pace defines the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. New York City is home to more than 3.2 million residents born outside the United States, the largest foreign-born population of any city in the world. In 2013, the tri-state New York Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.4 trillion. If greater New York City were a sovereign state, it would have the 12th highest GDP in the world.
New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace. In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entrepreneurship, social tolerance, and environmental sustainability, and as a symbol of freedom and cultural diversity.
Many districts and landmarks in New York City are well known, and the city received a record 61 million tourists in 2016, hosting three of the world's ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013. Several sources have ranked New York the most photographed city in the world. Times Square, iconic as the world's heart and its Crossroads, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The names of many of the city's bridges, skyscrapers, and parks are known around the world. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and the city is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Manhattan's real estate market is among the most expensive in the world. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, with multiple signature Chinatowns developing across the city. Mahalo travel expert Asha K. gives you some quick tips for visiting the Empire State Building in New York City.
Overview
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Empire State Building, located at 350 5th Avenue at W 34th Street, is a must-see landmark for anyone visiting New York City. Every day, tourists from around the globe visit this iconic building to check out the stunning 360-degree views of the city from the observation deck located on the 86th floor. On a clear day, you can see Central Park, New Jersey, Manhattan and even Massachusetts. To get to the observatory floor, expect to pay $21 for adults and $14 for children. An additional $6 can be paid for the prerecorded audio tour as well.
History
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Built in 1931 at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and W 34th Street, the 102-story Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world at 1,250 feet, plus the 203-foot pinnacle, until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1972. It has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Engineers. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. With the attack on the WTC in 2001, the Empire State Building became New York City's tallest building once more. It is the third tallest skyscraper in the United States after Chicago's Willis Sears Tower and Trump International Hotel and Tower, and the 15th tallest in the world.
The building was designed by William F. Lamb from the top down in the early 19th Century. Financing came from John J. Raskob and Pierre S. du Pont. Construction began on March 17, 1930 and involved 3,400 workers and iron workers. The ribbon was cut on May 1, 1931, 410 days after building started. It cost nearly $41 million to erect.
The Empire State Building includes 85 stories of commercial and office space. Excluding the observation deck, the other 16 stories represent the Art Deco tower. It has 6,500 windows and 73 elevators. About 1,000 businesses and 21,000 employees are housed within. It even has its own zip code - 10118.
The Tower Lights
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The tower lights change often to celebrate different occasions. May 20-22, 2011, for instance, the Empire State Building will display blue and white lights on the North and South sides, while the East and West sides will sport blue and orange lights for the New York Mets and the New York Yankees Subway Series. Earth Day and St. Patrick's Day have the building in green lights; red, white and blue for President's Day and Independence Day; and red, pink and white for Valentine's Day among many other celebratory days throughout the year. Visit the website to find out what color combinations are coming up for your visit.
The Run-Up
---------------------------------------------------------------------
On February 1, you could catch the Empire State Building Annual Run-Up where athletes from around the world come to race up the buildings 1,576 steps to the observatory floor. As of 2011, Thomas Dold of Germany took first place for the sixth year in a row with a time of 10 minutes and 10 seconds.
