Lake Eustis|Lake Dora|Pontoon Boat Tour|Dora Canal to Tavares Floating Boat Docks Florida
Lake Eustis to Lake Dora Pontoon Boat Tour via Dora Canal to Tavares Floating Boat Docks Florida
The city of Tavares, the geographical center of Florida, is just a few miles up Highway 441 from Mount Dora, and possibly the best location to start out on a tour of the Dora Canal.
Several tour boats start from here, which is just about a half mile from the canal, and whichever starting point you choose, do not miss out on this marvel of nature.
Pontoon boat tours to the Dora Canal from Tavares are from $20.Tavares is perhaps just 30 to 40 miles north of the Theme Parks, less than an hours drive up either Highway 27 to the West, or Orange Blossom Trail/441.
Be sure to take your video camera.

Exploring Lake Dora
You can take a boat from Central Florida to any port in the world, thanks to a series of natural lakes and man-made canals linking the heart of Florida to the ocean. We took a cruise across Lake Dora and up one of the canals to see wildlife and dense wetlands while visiting Mount Dora, FL.

Sinkholes - Mt. Dora
I don't have any expert testimony that these are actually sinkholes, but I think a visual examination will confirm that. They appear quite old, populated with trees, and in the wet season, water does accumulate at the bottom. Central Florida is pockmarked with these sinkholes, and in fact, are probably the genesis for the lakes that abound in the area. I've videoed sinkholes before, in Winter Park, Gainesville (the Devil's Millhopper) and Eustis. Fascinating stuff...no respecter of property rights! Essentially caused by the erosion of limestone via water percolation. They occur worldwide.
Dora Canal
Take a trip along the scenic Dora Canal, in Lake County, Florida. Described as the most beautiful mile of water in the world, the canal connects Lake Dora and Lake Eustis. Along the way you'll see nature in its pristine glory, a wide variety of birds, and if you're lucky, a gator or two. Or three... (photos © Rick Cooper 2010)

Where: The Lake County Blueway in Central Florida
When: Year-round! Just remember, if you venture out in the summer months, bring lots of water for those unshaded lakes.
How Much: You’ll need a kayak so if you don’t own one, rent from Florida from a Kayak. It’s $25 for 2 hours in a single kayak or $35 for 2 hours in a tandem kayak. Or go all out! Get a kayak and overnight in small towns along the way. Plan an adventure that suits your pocketbook.
What you’ll need: For a half day exploring the lakes in Lake County, take clothes you don’t mind getting wet, sunscreen, water, snacks, bug spray, and maybe pick up a map, just in case.

Alligator at Palm Island Park, Mount Dora, Florida
A resident of Mount Dora this fourteen maybe fifteen-foot alligator is known to live on Lake Dora and can be seen swimming or basking in the sun off the boardwalk at Palm Island Park, Mount Dora, Florida.
Alligators are such a majestic animal to sit and watch. The always capture our attention when we see them. As much as I have learned and know about the Florida Alligator I am still in awe at how much there is that I do not know yet. One fun fact that I have always found interesting is how to tell how big an alligator is. If you look at an alligator and look from the end of their snout up to their eyes, however, many inches there are, is how many feet long they are. Just my fun little fact for today!
If you would like to learn even more about this wonderful reptile there are numerous books that you can find to read about Florida Alligators. This book is one of my favorites for learning about Alligators.
