The Central Food Market of Riga, Latvia
The gigantic Central Markets were used as Zeppelin hangers during World War I. Each building sells something different. Meats, cheeses, honey, fruits, vegetables and sauerkraut goods. One woman even had pates of Horse Meat, Moose and Moose Salami!
Produce is also sold outside the buildings. Some sellers with only one small item to sell and others had stalls loaded with anything and everything.

Riga Central Market is the largest market in Europe. Come along as we tour the Riga Market and taste Latvian food.
We enjoyed our introduction to the Latvian cuisine and it was fun tasting different foods at the Central Market in Riga Latvia. I especially loved the Latvian desserts on our Riga Central Market tour.
You should add a Riga Central market visit to your list of things to do in Riga Latvia. More information about what to buy at Riga Central Market, tasting traditional Latvian food, and visiting Riga Central Market on the blog:

Riga In Your Pocket - Central Market Riga (Centrāltirgus)
Riga In Your Pocket visits the biggest market in Europe: the central market in Riga. When construction was completed in 1930, Riga's Central Market was one of the largest and most modern marketplaces on the European continent. Seventy years later, four of the five pavilions, which were used as zeppelin hangars during WWI, still serve their original function as meat, fish, produce and dairy markets. The bustling atmosphere also hasn't changed much, although most of the hawkers are more reluctant to haggle than in the past. The markets spill out beyond the confines of the hangars and operate throughout the day, some longer than others.

Riga Central Market
The heart and stomach of the city
The Riga Central Market is a major highlight for any visitor of the city. Fresh local products as well as foreign imports are on sale in a huge area that has a unique character and is well worth a lengthy visit while staying in Riga. This is also one of the best places to try Latvian food.
Within the market you will find all kinds of fresh produce, from meats to milk, fish to bread, wild berries to fresh fruits and even clothes and hardware. Spend some time here and buy as much local produce as you can. In season you will see things like birch tree juice or wild berries and mushrooms.
The trade area of the market consists of 5 pavilions which were constructed during the 1920’s and completed in 1930. The roofing of these pavilions was actually constructed using old zeppelin hangars that had been left in the South West of Latvia after the First World War. It is a great testimony to the engineers, who took it upon themselves to recycle these metal works, creating a great piece of architecture whilst preserving a part of history at the same time. The facades of the market pavilions are in the Art-Deco style. When these pavilions were constructed, they were one of the largest covered markets in Europe. But the market is not only made up of these great structures, you will also find a huge area of outdoor trading, as well as the many brick warehouses that date back to the 1800’s within Riga’s Central Market. You may also wish to check out Spiķeri, an area of the market that is slowly developing into a creative part of the city.
The market is not just about fresh food; there are a number of places to get something quick and tasty to eat in the Central Market. You will find a number of Ēdnīcas (Eateries) around the market, the largest being Cepelins just behind the flower sellers. In these you can find typical Latvian cafeteria food, lots of meat potatoes and cabbage. Just inside the Dairy pavilion there is a place selling hot virtuļi (donuts) and between the Vegetable and Fish pavilions there is Siļķītis un Dillītes fish restaurant and opposite a small hole in the wall selling hot Uzbek non bread filled with cheese, spinach or meat. Baked on the walls of their brick ovens, this makes a hot tasty snack on the go.
Ask your hotel or the tourist information for more info. Or feel free to join our food tasting tour of the Central Market to get closer to the district.

Latvia money currency is Lats (Ls). There is 100 santims in every Ls. 1Ls is about 2 USD. 50 santims - 1 USD
List of produce I bought this time and the price:
Banana: 60 santims per KG. Sometimes you can get for 20, 30 santims per KG. Depends on quality.
Grapes: 1Ls per KG. 2 months later you can get sweet, seedles grapes for 50 santims KG.
Watermelon: 20 santims per KG
Melon: 40 santims per KG
Dates: 2Ls per box. (600g) Spend all your money on theese organic dates, worth it :D
As the Latvia is situated in north of Europe most of the produce is imported from other countrys, like Spain, Greece.. so the quality of fruits won`t be the highest.

GONZO LV - 01. Riga Central Market ( english subtitles)
We are looking for witnesses of legend about WWII submarine, which went under the Riga Central market at the night on 13. february, but never rise to the surface. At first it seemed as much unthinkable as unreal is the fact that it is possible to find an old production next to the garbage bin. When the sellers has left the old production, neatly combed homeless persons are on the spot and brotherly splits it. Nonetheless, we found some witnesses of those two legends.
Let's take a little bit of this and that, and then we will see what happens.
