The New Anthropology/Pavlov Museum in Koltushi/Pavlov Institute of Physiology/Sankt Petersburg/2019
Fundamental biology and biotechnology today are trying to solve the problems of radical transformation of human nature. To solve these problems, scientists artificially profile stem cells, set certain genetic traits, grow artificial organs, experiment with neural networks, cyborgize living organisms, practice cryonics.
Such practices should not exist in isolation from Arts&Humanities disciplines. A dialogue between the natural sciences and the humanities (philosophy, literature, sociology, anthropology, art) is needed.
A special role in this dialogue is given to contemporary artists. Over the past 30 years, art has developed a lot of tools for interdisciplinary work: hybrid forms of media art, reflection in the border zones between science and art. Moreover, the combination of science and art is necessary in order for art and science to develop.
The collaboration of artists and scientists over the past 30 years is a fairly common practice. There are legendary examples - Joe Davis at MIT, SymbioticA and Dr. Steve Potter's lab at Georgia Institute of Technology, and there are Russian examples - ScienceArtLab and the Institute of Normal Physiology named after PC. Anokhina, Julia Borovaya and the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University, Vladimir Grig and the Faculty of Soil Science of St. Petersburg State University. Also last year, ITMO in St. Petersburg and Tomsk State University in Siberia launched Masters in Art & Science.
Therefore, we organize creative cooperation between Russian artists working in the field of technological art, sound art, media art, photography with scientific laboratories and units of the I.P. Pavlov Institute of Physiology. The created works became the part of the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Science in Pavlovsky Koltushy, one of the first Russian science cities that has become a UNESCO heritage site
In the fall of 2018, a unique experiment began on the joint work of artists and scientists on the creation of technological art objects at the Institute of Physiology. I.P. Pavlova. The result of the New Anthropology project was a new art&science exhibition at the Pavlov Museum in Koltushi . The museum is located in a constructivist building and is protected by UNESCO, so a trip through the exposition can become a real quest for visitors - secluded rooms and laboratories will open their doors for everyone. The opening of the exposition was accompanied by a special opening program for several days. All events were dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the great physiologist - Ivan Petrovich Pavlov.
The project was initiated by the St. Petersburg Techno-Art Center and implemented in partnership with the Institute of Physiology RAS named after I.P. Pavlova

In the years 1932-1935. the Soviet government built for the first Russian Nobel Prize laureate (1909) academician Ivan Petrovich Pavlov the Biostation of the Institute of Experimental Medicine - a scientific town 22 km from Leningrad in the village of Koltushi. It was the most modern scientific base at that time, where Soviet biologists and physicians had to work and live. The main laboratory of the scientific campus was engaged in experimental genetics of higher nervous activity. These words still flaunt on the facade of a constructivist two-story building, in which the last 10 years of his life worked as academician Pavlov.

Three sunny October days in Saint-Petersburg Russia. Day two.
Beginning this time in front of Admiralty building I am walking via Palace Bridge to strelka of Vasilyevskiy Island that has rampage directly to the Neva River. Surrounding area is intellectual capital of Saint Petersburg. Saint Petersburg State University, regional center of Russia Academy of Science with several prominent institutions, scientific museums and academic library are not exhaustive list of intellectual establishments seeded at this fruitful soil by Peter the Great and expanded later on until natural borders limited by water from three sides and common life of Vasilyevskiy Island (spottily penetrating even there). There is a newly erected statue in an honor of human rights advocate, academic Andrei Sakharov. He has the same last name as mine with no known relations. What makes the picture even more coincidental is the fact that I and my son were born very nearby from the square that bears now our surname. Leaving Vasilevskiy through University bank and colonnade of former Custom Office (and Naval Museum) coming back to waste Palace Square with monolith red granite Alexander Column supporting angel with the face of victor over Bonaparte, Aleksandra the First. Walking across the city via embankment of Moyka River to the church of Savior on the Spilled Blood I am entering Garden of Michael. Then via Field of Mars and Trinity Bridge my steps approaching Peter and Paul Fortress. It is one of the very first constructions of Saint Petersburs meant to be impregnable stronghold and later on used as state prison (that has perfect sense). Nowadays fans of body caring are using its bastions as windshield to sunbath and even swim. Inside the fortress the Peter and Paul Cathedral dominates surrounding with angel on the top of golden spire. The Cathedral is also the place of last rest of Russian Emperors. End of the day was marked by close encounter of resent and controversial statue of Peter the Great that looks not too grotesque after all these years I saw it first time.
The Lost Art of Stratigraphy: Part 3 - Layers and Strata, Mike Smith
Dr Mike Smith discusses sediments packaged as a layer - a depositional unit that may contain a mixture of different types of sediments. This video's topics include: the components, structure and rate of accumulation of layers and strata. Examples are drawn from Fromms Landing, Puritjarra, and Cuddie Springs.
Dr Mike Smith is an archaeologist and a Senior Fellow at the Research Centre, National Museum of Australia. His research focuses on the prehistory, cultural history and human ecology of Australia's deserts, the history of ideas about Australian drylands, the timing, nature and impact of early human colonisation of the Australian continent, and the presentation of environmental history in museums.
Preserving Lonesome George Short Doc
As the last survivor of his species, Lonesome George became a worldwide icon of conservation decades before he died from natural causes in the Galapagos in 2012.
When the Pinta Island tortoise arrived at the American Museum of Natural History in early 2013 to be preserved, Museum scientists and a master taxidermist faced a number of critical decisions. The specimen had to be both scientifically accurate and beautiful, true not just to the Pinta Island species but to the beloved individual, Lonesome George. With no contemporary giant tortoise taxidermy to reference and no margin for error, this was a once-in-a-lifetime challenge.
As the process unfolded, Lonesome George’s preparators developed an emotional connection to the animal. They also felt a deep responsibility to Lonesome George’s former caretakers, to the people of Ecuador, and to future generations who might be inspired by Lonesome George’s story and message of biodiversity under threat.
The short (24 mins) documentary Preserving Lonesome George, reveals the intricacies of taxidermy, in which art and science combine to create a powerful tribute to a global conservation icon.
Learn more about Lonesome George:
Lonesome George was on view at the Museum from Sept. 9, 2014 through January 4, 2015. Learn more about the exhibition:
In 2015, Lonesome George will return to Ecuador as part of that nation’s patrimony.
The special exhibition Lonesome George was presented at the American Museum of Natural History in collaboration with the Galapagos National Park Directorate and Galapagos Conservancy.

US Space & Rocket Center’s Vick on Apollo 12 Mobile Quarantine Facility
Joseph Vick, the manager of museum education at the US Space & Rocket Center, discusses the Mobile Quarantine Facility used by Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad, Al Bean and Dick Gordon after their mission to the Moon with Defense & Aerospace Report Editor Vago Muradian in Huntsville, Ala. The three spent two weeks in the modified Airstream trailer to ensure that potential diseases from the lunar surface didn’t contaminate planet Earth. Apollo missions 11, 12 and 14 astronauts that made it to the Moon used the mobile facilities immediately after landing — entering the trailer after splashdown aboard USS Hornet through return to the United States — until scientists concluded that the precaution was unnecessary.

Колыма - родина нашего страха / Kolyma - Birthplace of Our Fear

Who Owns Antiquity? Museums, Repatriation, and Armed Conflict
The Classics Department at Stanford University presents a Lorenz Eitner Lecture on Classical Arts and Culture intended to publicize classics scholarship to a wider public audience.
The last ten years, in particular, have been dominated by discussions of cultural property--either its destruction in zones of military conflict or its involvement in litigation and claims for repatriation. This lecture reviews recent developments in the art and antiquities market, the shifting acquisition policies in museums, and cultural heritage training programs for U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
