I truly enjoy cities that are pedestrian friendly. That is, sites, parks, entertainment districts, hotels, restaurants, that are within easy walking distance of each other. Although you might think with it's frenetic pace and appearance of crazy traffic Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam might not fit this category, but that's not the case. Once you get used to the traffic flow and crossing etiquette of Vietnam's largest city you'll appreciate, specifically the District 1 area, with it's convenience and plethora of landmarks, historical sites, museums, hotels and other amenities within reasonable walking distances. One place I always return to in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1, or what still many locals refer to as Saigon, is the Central Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral area. The Saigon Central Post Office in my opinion is one of the most beautiful buildings of the French colonization era of Indochina and Vietnam. Built between 1886-1891 there seems to be conflicting stories on who actually designed it. Gustav Eiffel has been named, as has Alfred Foulhoux and Auguste Henri Vildieu. Of course because the Eiffel name is so well known this is the most marketable story, he actually had an office in Saigon during this era designing many bridges, some of which are still in use today in Vietnam. Regardless of who designed it the Saigon Central Office is one site not to be missed on a visit to Ho Chi Minh City. Saigon Central Post Office - Ho Chi Minh Vietnam
One of HCMC's most popular attractions, Saigon Central Post Office is the largest post office in Vietnam.
Built between 1886 and 1891 by renowned architect Gustave Eiffel, the building’s vaulted roof and arched windows are reminiscent of early European railway stations. An enormous picture of Ho Chi Minh overlooks proceedings.

Saigon Central Post Office & Shopping in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam (4K)
The Saigon Central Post Office is one of the more popular free places to visit in Ho Chi Minh city. It is a giant building with interesting architecture inside, and plenty of opportunities to buy souvenirs and do some shopping. It can get very crowded as you can see!
This was from our 2018 visit to Saigon Vietnam as part of our 14 day Asia cruise on the Majestic Princess cruise ship.

There are many fine examples of French colonial architecture in Vietnam. The city of Ho Chi Minh contains some of these splendid buildings.Like the Central Post Office and the Notre-Dame Basilica cathedral opposite, and a short walk away the Municipal Theatre. These buildings have been fully restored and are open to the general public.

The Saigon Central Post Office or the Ho Chi Minh City Post Office (Vietnamese: Bưu điện Trung tâm Sài Gòn, French: Poste centrale de Saïgon) is a post office in the downtown Ho Chi Minh City, near Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, the city's cathedral. The building was constructed when Vietnam was part of French Indochina in the late 19th century. It counts with Gothic, Renaissance and French influences. It was constructed between 1886-1891 and is now a tourist attraction - Wikipedia.

SAIGON CENTRAL POST OFFICE
One of HCMC's most popular attractions, Saigon Central Post Office is the largest post office in Vietnam. Built between 1886 and 1891 by renowned architect Gustave Eiffel, the vaulted roof and arched windows are reminiscent of early European railway stations.
An enormous picture of Ho Chi Minh overlooks proceedings. Even if you don't have a bundle of postcards to send to the relatives back home, you can still visit Saigon Central Post Office and admire the interior scenery.
It is important to remember that this is a working post office. You can buy stamps, books, souvenirs and collector coin sets inside.
Across the street from Saigon Central Post Office lies Notre Dame Cathedral. For shutterbugs this is information worth remembering.
Check out the large handpainted maps on either side of the interior walls, one of which reads, 'Saigon et ses environs 1892' - Saigon and its environment 1892.

This building was built between 1886-1891, it was designed by Gustave Eiffel, who was same the architect behind famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), you can send a post card or ship anything to anywhere in the world. There are very nice hand made post cards carved from paper which was sold just outside the post office for less than a dollar CAD.
