162.Synagogue (Central synagogue of Kazakhstan)
The first Jewish community was formed in Kazakhstan at the end of the 19th century, when the army soldiers returned to the civilian life after their service. They organized the first synagogue in a humble wooden house in 1884. In 1907 they registered the first Jewish praying society.
The community became much bigger during the Great Patriotic War, when many Jewish families were evacuated to Almaty. Many of those Jewish migrants were well educated and had university degrees and were skillful in different professions. They influenced the industry, medicine, arts, education and science of Kazakhstan. The off springs of those Jewish built the first Synagogue on Rayimbek Avenue, 206. This is a majestic building, it is a spiritual center of Judaism in Almaty.
The Synagogue is decorated in white and turquoise colors; it has beautiful stained glass windows. The Synagogue is divided into several functional compartments under a large dome. The dome is crowned by David’s star.
The interior is decorated with gorgeous ornamentation. The ancient rolled books are kept in the Synagogue, they are very important for Judaists. There is a big library in the Synagogue.

159.Saint-Nicholay’s Cathedral
Long term livers of old Almaty called it church at the Kuchugurs (which means “uncomfortable”). It was designed by the architect S.K.Troparovsky under the direction of A.P. Zenkov in 1908. People living in the south-eastern outskirts requested a cathedral to be built in honor of the merchant Savva Fedorovich Zubov.
The wooden cathedral was built in the shape of a ship. There was tower bell on the top of it. The domes of the cathedral were sky blue. The city dwellers liked the cathedral for its simplicity and elegancy. It became one of the most popular places of the old times. The Cathedral is a unique place due to its beautiful design and the inner atmosphere. The Cathedral was named after Saint Nicholay. His monument was built in the Cathedral’s area. People come here to have the sacred ceremonies, like weddings, confession, church office etc. Christians visit the Cathedral during the religious holidays. The main hole thing of the Cathedral is the chest with relics of St. Nicholay.

euronews Life - Kazakhstan : une quête d'unité spirituelle
02.15 -- 02.39
SOT (English) Bishop of Bradford, The Rt Revd Nick Baines:
