History of British Ceylon Tea Documentary
A personal journey into the history of tea and Britain's involvement with Sri Lanka. I trace my own ancestry to the days of the British Empire, when my family were planters in Ceylon. I meet a long lost relative from the Congreve family and I even find 19th century photos of my ancestor Norman Rowsell hung up in a Victorian sports pavilion called the Darrawella Club.
The British Empire is viewed in the context of civilisational cycles and I explain author John Still's theory of the Jungle Tide and the jungle gods that are still worshipped here. Tea and the modern tea industry of Sri Lanka that was founded under the British Empire, is here used as a device by which the viewer can look at the history of that country and understand the impermanent and fragile nature of all civilisation.

SRI LANKA'S GOT TALENT. Kandy VLOG. ????????
I used my two strong legs and a two buses to get from Sigiriya to Kandy where I spent and afternoon.
I love the chaos of a big city. There's always so much going on that just walking around the streets makes for great entertainment.
I sampled some Sri Lankan street food in the form of Wadi, which is some kind of non-sweet Sri Lankan donut with herbs. That's the best way I can describe it. At only 30 rupees and quite tasty I was happy with my purchase.
I paid the foreigner price to get into the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. It was fine, but I've been to more visually impressive temples. I usually don't bother going to temples but everyone I spoke to said I had to go to this one. I didn't stay long and left to find a tea house before closing time to end the night with a hot pot of Ceylon Tea.
It was on the train to Colombo the next morning when I met the talented train busker, singing and playing the tambourine. Everyone was uninterested but he could see that I was enjoying his music and started playing more enthusiastically.

This is our final episode of our Sri Lankan Food series and you are NOT going to want to miss this episode! Today, we are taking you to experience traditional FAMILY HOME-COOKED food, with lots of different Sri Lankan dishes. We start by meeting the family and sharing tea and honey-filled string hoppers. Then, the family shows us their garden, where we picked an entire basket of organic vegetables, from eggplants to beans, this family grew it all! We even picked a jackfruit from the top of a tree.
The family takes every ingredient back to the house where they start preparing them into Sri Lankan style curries. Watching the process from start to finish and then eating the delicious final product was an incredible experience, connecting with the local family through FOOD! These women are incredible chefs!
In the evening, the family cooks a delicious snack - boiled corn, paired with herbal tea. We enjoy our food and tea up in their tree house that overlooks the nearby lake. They explain that the tree house’s purpose was to serve as a nighttime lookout spot for farmers to protect their gardens from elephants. All of the food that the family graciously prepared for us was INSANELY DELICIOUS!
What food did you think looked the most delicious?! Thank you for joining us on this SRI LANKA series, thank you to the family featured in this video and the Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau for making this experience happen! Next up is TOKYO JAPAN!!! Make sure to SUBSCRIBE and turn ON post NOTIFICATIONS so that you never miss an episode!
