SYND 26 11 76 CORNERSTONE LAID FOR CHAIRMAN MAO ZEDONG'S MEMORIAL IN PEKING
(26 Nov 1976) Cornerstone being laid for Chairman Mao Zedong's (Mao Tse Tung) memorial in Peking as construction begins. The huge mausoleum will sit in Peking's Tien An Mein Square, facing the forbidden city. Although Chairman of China's Communist Party, Hua Kuo-Feng didn't mention it, an official report of the ceremony accused Madam Mao and her radical colleagues of trying to sabotage plans to preserve Mao's remains. During the ceremony Hua said hundreds of millions of people throughout China are jubilant, presumably because of the radicals arrest. But diplomatic sources also believe the jubilation is because people feel Hua will do away with Mao's heavily politicized cultural policies

The recent talk in Russia about removing Lenin's body
from on Red Square fueled discussion in China
on removing Mao's body from Tiananmen Square.
Many believe that it is only a matter of time
before Mao's body is removed.
2011 marks the 87th anniversary of Lenin's death.
An online poll launched by the ruling United Russia
party called Goodbye Lenin, raised the question of
whether to bury Lenin's body. Among 250,000 voters,
nearly 70% voted in favor of burying the body.
This online poll also started discussion in China.
The public suggests Mao's Mausoleum should also
be removed from Tiananmen Square.
Chinese ideologist Wang Kang said to Deutsche Welle,
that these atheists' bodies should have been
removed a long time ago.
Wang: there are 5 bodies on display is crystal coffins
worldwide: Lenin, Stalin, Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam,
Mao Zedong, and Kim Il Sung of North Korea.
Stalin's body was removed by Khrushchev,
and I believe Lenin's body will also be removed soon.
Commentator Lan Shu says that since last year
CCP's political bureau has decided to not mention
Maoism in some official documents, which indicates
that Mao has become a burden for the CCP. It is likely
that Mao's body will be cremated when necessary.
Also as the CCP faces disintegration,
Mao's body certainly will not stay long.
Lan: It is only a matter of time before Mao's body
is removed from Tiananmen Square.
Suggestions to remove Mao's body have been made
long ago. According to a 2003 article in Hong Kong
Open Magazine, Chinese scholars called for
the removal of Mao's body. The article remarks that
Mao is responsible for many crimes, and preserving
his body is mummy worship at the people's cost;
therefore, both Mao's body and his portrait
should be removed from Tiananmen Square.
History teacher Yuan Tengfei:
what is Mao's Mausoleum? It's Yasukuni Shrine,
a shrine for a cold blooded murderer.
Prof. Zhou Xiaozheng from China People's University
said to Deutsche Welle, that Lenin's and Mao's bodies
should both be removed -- it is not a question.
The communist revolution caused 100 million deaths
worldwide, among which Mao is responsible for 60
to 80 million, says commentator Heng He. Not only
should Tiananmen Square say goodbye to Mao,
China should also say goodbye to the CCP.

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall
The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the life of the leader of Nationalist China who moved his government, the Republic of China, into exile on Taiwan after his defeat at the hands of Mao Zedong in 1949. Chiang had served as the leader of a major segment of China from the 1920s until his death on April 5, 1975.

Tiananmen Square Beijing China
Tiananmen Square (simplified Chinese: 天安门广场; traditional Chinese: 天安門廣場; pinyin: Tiān'ānmén Guǎngchǎng) is the large plaza near the center of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen (literally, Gate of Heavenly Peace) which sits to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City. It has great cultural significance as a symbol because it was the site of several key events in Chinese history. Enlarged in 1949 to the current size, its flatness is broken only by the 38-metre (125-foot) high Monument to the People's Heroes and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. The square lies between two ancient, massive gates: the Tian'anmen to the north and the Zhengyangmen, better known as Qianmen (simplified Chinese: 前门; traditional Chinese: 前門; pinyin: Qiánmén; literally Front Gate) to the south. Along the west side of the Square is the Great Hall of the People. Along the east side is the National Museum of China. Chang'an Avenue, which is used for parades, lies between the Tian'anmen and the Square. Trees line the east and west edges of the Square, but the square itself is open, with neither trees nor benches.
