It is wonderful that we have got that small region in France where we have the wine it's created from, and they should be able to use the name, and use their name proudly - champagne - but there's also no reason why other areas, in particular the south east of England cannot be producing wine of a similar quality but focussing on calling it sparkling wine but using the same grape variety so I really don't think that it's an issue and I think that it's fantastic that they've got copyright of the name but what we need to do and what we are doing, is raising the profile of sparkling wine and educating consumers

Delicate nose, really quite subtle and nice, I think it's a lovely nose hints of - actually some hints of oranges in there actually but generally, slightly, you know, not quite as much as perhaps number two of the bready taste in there, but a bit of fruit, citrusy fruit.

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Roberts, managing director, Ridgeview Wine Estate:
We want a nice long period of time for the grapes to ripen. What is important to champagne and anyone trying to grow a wine similar to champagne is in fact difficult growing conditions. It sounds absurd but in fact yougrowing at this latitude, is very important because you want high acidity in the wine and a long growing season, like soft fruits, like raspberries in Scotland and so on, the best have the longest growing season and they need to ripen on the plant.

20. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Bradfield, Visitor
Well, we didn't pick out the right champagnes at all. But all of the top scores were ones that they made here which we really liked. But we didn't get which were actually the proper French champagnes.
21. SOUNDBITE (English) Anna Rowland, Visitor
The ones that they said were champagne didn't score that highly for us in terms of taste and quality so that was quite interesting. Because you could assume that they would be the ones that got the highest scores but they didn't.
22. SOUNDBITE (English) Christian Grillaut, Visitor from France
My two best ones came from England.
Off camera question (English) Are you surprised that the two best ones are these? (ie from here)
SOUNDBITE (English) Christian Grillaut, commercial manager:
'No, not at all, you know, I think it's a lovely part of the world, nicer in fact, nicer than Champagne, near the sea and very pretty.

LEAD IN :
Traditional European winemakers are in a rut, facing overcapacity, and tough markets.
On 4th July, the European Union will put forward proposals to overhaul the wine industry, which is struggling with competition from New World rivals.
It's proposing that excess vines are dug up, and subsidies are cut.
But one vineyard in Britain is claiming it's business of making sparkling wine to rival French champagn is thriving.

Brexit weighs on UK champagne distributor ahead of Christmas
(15 Dec 2017) Frederic Berthelot has eight hectares (20 acres) of vines on the slopes above a tiny village in France's Champagne region.
Berthelot's century-old business decided to start exporting to Britain for the first time just as the country voted to leave the EU.
Eighteen months later, Berthelot and his British trading partner are still waiting to find out what rules will govern trade post-Brexit.
While British and EU officials last week trumpeted their success in reaching a deal on preliminary Brexit issues, it may be another year before any concrete decisions around trade deals are reached.
Britain's economy has already slowed markedly this year amid Brexit uncertainty. The drop in the value of the pound has made wine more expensive in Britain.
It's potentially even tougher for small business owners like Berthelot, who face competition from New World brands that can be cheaper and who deploy marketing strategies to entice consumers confused by the wall of wine'' encountered at grocery stores.
At this time of year, Britons love to put this little luxury on their Christmas tables.
Berthelot, whose Roger Barnier brand is named after his grandfather, hoped to take advantage of that thirst.
He recently opened a new horizon for his business, partnering with London-based entrepreneur Richard Ellison to export his champagne to Britain for the first time, despite the specter of Brexit.
Although shipments have been disappointing, Berthelot is playing the long game from this village of 220.
The 54-year-old is quietly passionate and proud of his product.
The business has been in his family for five generations. His oldest vines, from 1910 and 1915, survived both world wars and a bug that damaged other vines in the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The house supplied Champagne to the French presidential palace under Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande. A thank you card from the palace hangs among award certificates.
Berthelot is confident that sales will eventually improve as he is in a quality-price ratio that's doing well globally.
Ellison started Wanderlust Wine just before Brexit with the idea of shipping wine from a group of small producers not found in the U.K. directly to individuals in Britain.
He is still betting the model will succeed, even though he's frustrated with the Brexit headaches caused by warring politicians.
Ellison and Berthelot clink glasses as they discuss their partnership. They make a funny pair: Berthelot has the unhurried dignity of a man who works the land and crafts a treasured product; the boyish, fast-talking Ellison is a former banker with a global world view.
But they agree on one thing: whatever havoc Brexit might cause now, the British will always drink Champagne.

Well I was born in the vats like we say in France and since I am very young, I always worked in the wine and in the vineyard and all the family's in the champagne business also and since twenty years now, I have quite a good experience of vineyards and wine and I think it will be good enough to start in England.

We've done the research on the weather and since the last twenty years the weather is getting warmer and that's one big important thing for the grapes and the second important thing is the soil. We find in this place its quite chalky like the same soil we have at home and the warm weather and the chalk is good for the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir, both grapes we are planting.

I think the comparison between English Sparkling Wine and champagne is very valid because champagne is the great sparkling wine of the world. Every sparkling wine grower wherever they are in the world wants to make something that's as good, or better, than champagne. Remember Champagne (region) is the nearest continental wine growing region to the UK. Its only 300 miles (482 km) away, you know we do have some chalk sites, our climate is improving and so if you'd like to say are we as good as champagne, the answer is yes. The best wines that we produce in this country are equal to some of the great champagnes.

I think the idea of dreaming up a suitable name for English Sparkling Wine is one that we've looked at over the years.people have suggested things like 'fizz' and all kinds of other strange names. The one thing I do know is that nobody is going to agree on a single individual name and so we just get on with it English and Welsh Sparkling Winethis hasn't stopped the Americans, the Australians, the New Zealanders, South Africans selling their product which is called Sparkling Wine. Australian Sparkling Wine sells quite well in this countryNew Zealand Sparkling Wineso why shouldn't English Sparkling Wine and Welsh Sparkling Wine sell just as well. We don't want to get hung up over this question of a name.

Clad in a white t-shirt, denim jacket, jeans and a baseball cap, Alli looked relaxed as he spent time with his one and only.
The youngster started the season slowly but has rediscovered the form he showed last term in recent weeks.
Alli's recent displays have been enough to alert the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are both interested in signing England's brightest prospect - but would have to cough up at least £70million to make Spurs consider selling.
Alli and his girlfriend were snapped at a champagne bar in London
The attacking midfielder rocked double denim
Alli has enjoyed a meteoric rise from League One player to international footballer and is only in his second season in the top flight.
In his first full campaign in the Premier League, his form was so impressive that he was given a call-up to the full England squad by manager Roy Hodgson.
It was his twin strike that ended Chelsea’s 13-match winning run last week, two headed goals confirming his return to his best form after England's Euro 2016 failure. The Spurs youngster is back to his best
But the club are involved in a £750m redevelopment of their White Hart Lane stadium - and Barca and Real have a history of landing their targets when they set their minds to it.
Real persuaded Spurs to sell two prize assets in successive summers in Luka Modric for £30m in 2012 and then Gareth Bale in a world-record £85.3m deal.
The Bernabeu club are banned from signing players in this transfer window, but will make a serious move for Alli in the summer.

STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin, enjoying royal hospitality on a fence-mending visit to Britain, toured the sights in Scotland's capital Edinburgh on Wednesday accompanied by Britain's Prince Andrew.
Like the thousands of tourists visiting Edinburgh on a sunny summer afternoon, Putin spent much of the day sightseeing. His itinerary included stops at the city's medieval castle, royal palace and an art gallery.
During the visit, Putin urged the United States to work through the United Nations to rebuild Iraq.
On Tuesday evening the Putins were guests of honour at a state banquet at the medieval Guildhall in London's financial district.
In an after dinner speech Putin returned to the theme of the UN, praising its value as the foremost international body in the world.
Putin and his wife Lyudmila are enjoying royal hospitality on their four-day British visit. Recipients of state visits _ only two are allowed each year _ are chosen by the government, but the Putins are staying at Buckingham Palace with Queen Elizabeth II, and their schedule is strong on ceremony and sightseeing.
Politics will come Thursday, when Putin meets Prime Minister Tony Blair to discuss Iraq, investment and other issues.

Everyone would agree that there remains a scepticism towards English Wine, although its much much less than it used to be. And, but, on the other hand, we've always sold out, you know, we started making three-five thousand bottles a year and selling out in a year. And now we're up to twenty-thousand and selling out in a year. So we can't really complain.

Out of the Devon growers that I know, at least half are now going towards doing sparkling wine. Its a very long and slightly technically complicated process, but we get the naturally high in acid grapes that Champagne would, we're not a million miles from Champagne, and I think it's already clear with what showing through with English grape varieties that that is a way we can actually be world class.

If you take Cornwall and Devon, indeed, if you take the south coast and the south of England; as climate changes and it becomes a little warmer, I think there are big changes beginning to be seen in terms of the quality of fruit you can actually produce each year. And not every year obviously is successful. We have dreadful summers when nothing happens. But in a good summer here, very good fruit can be produced and good fruit does actually turn itself into good wine and the techniques and the investment that we're seeing all through the south of England is really very encouraging.

Until about ten years ago, most of the grapes grown in this country were things like Germanic hybrids and crosses, but now we've got the classic sparkling wine varieties; Pinot Noir, Pinot Menuier and, of course, Chardonnay. Those are being planted very heavily. And I think for the future those will be the varieties that will be found in most sparkling wines.

Quite a lot of people taste our wines and say ' well, actually that's not bad'. And I say 'no problem', and they look slightly embarrassed and I say 'you know, don't worry about that'. Because people are now starting to, you know, come round. There are people who are actually evangelical about our wines, and there's a whole range of different groups. But very few people do we now find who don't enjoy them when they taste them.
