Charles Fort is a star fort located on the water's edge, at the southern end of the village of Summer Cove, on Kinsale harbour, County Cork, Ireland. James' Fort is located on the other side of the harbour.
Charles Fort is built on the site of an earlier stronghold known as Ringcurran Castle, which featured prominently during the Siege of Kinsale in 1601. The fort, which is named after Charles II, was designed by the Surveyor-general Sir William Robinson - architect of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. The fort was built in the 1670s and 1680s to a star fortification design - a layout specifically designed to resist attack by cannon.
It is said to be haunted by a ghost known as the White Lady, and the traditional account of the reason for this haunting is briefly as follows: Shortly after the erection of the fort, a Colonel Warrender, a severe disciplinarian, was appointed its governor. He had a daughter, who bore the quaint Christian name of Wilful; she became engaged to a Sir Trevor Ashurst, and subsequently married him. On the evening of their wedding-day the bride and bridegroom were walking on the battlements, when she espied some flowers growing on the rocks beneath. She expressed a wish for them, and a sentry posted close by volunteered to climb down for them, provided Sir Trevor took his place during his absence. He assented, and took the soldier's coat and musket while he went in search of a rope. Having obtained one, he commenced his descent; but the task proving longer than he expected, Sir Trevor fell asleep. Meantime the governor visited the sentries, as was his custom, and in the course of his rounds came to where Sir Trevor was asleep. He challenged him, and on receiving no answer perceived that he was asleep, whereupon he drew a pistol and shot him through the heart. The body was brought in, and it was only then the governor realised what had happened. The bride, who appears to have gone indoors before the tragedy occurred, then learned the fate that befell her husband, and in her distraction, rushed from the house and flung herself over the battlements. In despair at the double tragedy, her father shot himself during the night.

Ce fort médiéval en forme d'étoile a été bâti au XVIIe siècle. Il comporte entre autres deux bastions qui font face à la mer. Plusieurs bâtiments ont été érigés à l'intérieur de ce fort, formant ainsi une petite ville protégée par les remparts du fort. Les anglais ont occupé ce fort jusqu'en 1922.
Un des bâtiments abrite une exposition qui nous permet de découvrir l'histoire du fort. On y retrouve des habits, fusils et autres objets de cette époque.
De plus, il offre une superbe vue de la baie et du village de Kinsale.

CHARLES FORT - Summercove, Kinsale, Co. Cork, Ireland
Perhaps the best-known historical attraction in Kinsale, Charles Fort, is on the road just beyond Summercove. The Fort is one of the finest surviving examples of a 17th Century star-shaped fort, and much of the construction which was begun in 1678 still remains . The Fort has two enormous bastions overlooking the estuary, and three facing inland. Within its walls were all the barracks and ancillary facilities to support the fort’s garrison. The Fort continued in military use until 1922.
Constructed was finished in 1682 and British Army troops were garrisoned there until 1922, Charles Fort overlooks the Old Head of Kinsale and the mouth of the Bandon river. Today, this formidable structure provides a platform to enjoy the breathtaking views of Kinsale town and harbor.
This remarkable piece of military engineering was completed during the reign of King Charles II. Associated with some of the most momentous events in Irish history, Charles Fort was besieged in 1690 during the Williamite War and more recently in the midst of the Irish Civil War (1922). The Fort, one of the finest military installations within Ireland, sits on 20 acres of land.

Located on the South coast of Ireland in Kinsale, Charles Fort was built between 1677 and 1682. The star layout of the fort with bastions at the corners of the walls eliminated blind spots.
With a focus on seaward defence, the landward and inland bastions of the fort are overlooked by higher ground. This weakness was of critical importance when the fort was subject to a 13-day siege in 1690 during the Williamite War in Ireland.
The fort remained in use as a British Army barracks for two hundred years afterwards, before being relinquished by British forces following the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. The fort fell out of use after being burned by retreating anti-Treaty forces during the Irish Civil War in 1922.

First completed in 1682, Charles Fort was sometimes historically referred to as the new fort - to contrast with James' Fort (the old fort) which had been built on the other side of Kinsale harbour before 1607.The fort is now operated as a heritage tourism site by the Heritage Ireland arm of the Office of Public Works.It was built on the site of an earlier stronghold known as Ringcurran Castle. Charles Fort, near Kinsale, has long had the reputation of being haunted it is a star fort located on the water's edge, at the southern end of the village of Summer Cove. An account of this was sent to the Wide World Magazine (Jan. 1908), by Major H. L. Ruck Keene, D.S.O.; he states that he took it from a manuscript written by a Captain Marvell Hull about the year 1880. Further information on the subject of the haunting is to be found in Dr. Craig's Real Pictures of Clerical Life in Ireland.

The above is from Dr. Craig's book already alluded to. In the Wide World Magazine the legend differs slightly in details. According to this the governor's name was Browne, and it was his own son, not his son-in-law, that he shot; while the incident is said to have occurred about a hundred and fifty years ago.
.An early lighthouse was established here in the 17th century by Robert Reading and additional works (including the development of internal citadel defences) were added through the 18th and 19th centuries.
